Uhuru Park is one of Nairobi’s most iconic and beloved public spaces, offering a refreshing retreat from the city's busy streets. Located just a stone’s throw from the CBD, this beautifully landscaped park blends history, culture, and relaxation in one vibrant urban oasis.
After recent renovations, Uhuru Park has transformed into a modern green space with lush gardens, clean walkways, decorative fountains, and family-friendly recreational zones. The atmosphere is peaceful yet alive, with Nairobians from all walks of life coming to enjoy the open spaces.
Whether you're looking to enjoy a quiet picnic, take a scenic walk, ride a paddle boat on the lake, or just relax under the shade of a tree with the skyline in view, Uhuru Park delivers. It’s also a favorite spot for photography, cultural events, peaceful protests, and weekend hangouts.
The park holds deep historical significance too it’s where Kenya’s independence heroes once rallied and where key national events have been commemorated. That sense of pride and history still lingers in the air.
What we loved:
Beautiful, clean, and safe after renovation
Free entry and easily accessible
Great views of Nairobi city skyline
Perfect for kids, couples, families, and tourists
Plenty of seating, shade, and picnic spots
Tips:
Visit in the morning or late afternoon for the best lighting and cooler temperatures.
Bring a camera — the views are Instagram-worthy!
Pack a snack or support local vendors nearby.
Final Verdict:
Uhuru Park is not just a park — it’s the green heart of Nairobi. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, it’s the perfect place to unwind, reflect, and soak in the soul of the city. A must-visit for anyone exploring Nairobi.

***Location***
You cannot get a better location. Along Uhuru Highway, right at the CBD. The entrance is a walking distance as of now near the crisco Church, but hopefully all the other entrances will soon be accessible.
***Cost***
It is free to enter. Am of the opinion they should charge KES 100 per person to help with maintaining the park. It is evident that a lot has gone into rehabilitating this park and it is still not fully operational.
***Experience***
I really enjoyed my afternoon here. I took a long walk and read a book next to the water. Very relaxing and quiet.
I also learned something new at the small memorial.
There are plenty of places to sit and even to work if you have portable WiFi.
Carry your own snack and make a day of it.
***Recommendations ***
A no noise policy would be great. People should not be allowed to listen to music or watch something on speaker. Bring your headphones if you fall under this category of people.
This place is great for meditation, yoga at the park, reading, journalling, painting, group activities, exercising..... the list is endless.
***Disappointments***
*Roudy school children.
* No loos as of now. ( We should stop taking out our frustration on public infrastructure.) I think the riots got to the loos😕
* An eatery would be great.
* Those men who used to frequent this place before found their way to the new and improved park. If you know you know🙄
* The kids area is on the other side and it is worse than before.
Overall, I enjoyed the park and will be back.
Weekdays are without a doubt the best time to visit.

Uhuru Park is like Nairobi’s living room. Everyone’s been here at least once — from lovebirds on boat rides, to students revising under trees, to preachers with megaphones, to politicians pulling mega rallies. 🗣️🎤
The park stretches right next to the CBD along Uhuru Highway and borders Kenyatta Avenue, Parliament Road, and Community area. Major landmarks around it include the Nairobi Serena Hotel, Parliament Buildings, Kenyatta Avenue Uhuru Monument, and not too far off — the iconic KICC rooftop stares right at it. 🏢
Inside, you’ll find:
🚤 Man-made lake – where you can rent a boat and live your Titanic fantasy (minus the iceberg).
🌳 Shady gardens – perfect for picnics, chilled dates, or just escaping Nairobi matatu noise.
⛪ Freedom Corner – the legendary protest & activism spot that shaped Kenya’s democracy.
🎠 Play zones – kids running wild, ice cream vendors chasing sales, and photographers chasing perfect shots.
It’s free, it’s green, and it’s where Nairobians go when they want to slow down the city’s fast pace. If CBD feels like caffeine, Uhuru Park is chamomile tea. ☕🌿

Came here on a weekday and it was very nice. They did ask for passports at the entrance. Overall it’s a nice park to relax in the middle of the city. Felt very safe overall as a foreigner.

We got a taste of being up close and personal with giraffes at The Giraffe Centre @giraffecentre_ in Nairobi, Kenya before our afternoon tea experience with them at @thegiraffemanor
Stay tuned for a reel showcasing the latter.
P.S. The last time I (Joy) was at the Giraffe Center was as an 8 year old, on a school field trip. It was a nostalgic feeling going back as an adult. 🙂
