on booking, the details were somewhat clear - find the entrance at the east gate. i initially pushed on every glass door at the east gate, all being locked, until i saw a separate entrance for the hotel. I entered, but it wasn't completely clear where to go until i saw the lifts and Bespoke mentioned. Once inside, i was greeted with a beautiful view of Adelaide Oval, a spacious restaurant environment with soft tones, subtle music and gorgeous digital screen of changing scenery of South Australia - in particular, wine regions through the hills and barossa. we were taken to our seats, and it appears every effort has been made to show case the oval as most seats were touching the glass or close to. The tables for 2 were easily big enough for 4 which was a nice touch rarely seen. The menu was simple but well chosen, the specials sounded great - it would have been nice for the waiter to have gone through them with me, maybe highlighting key points of how they were made. we had table water quickly, and soon after our first beverages - another nice tough was a good selection of tap beer and imperial pint sizes on offer - 1 Furphy coming up.... i asked the waiter what she had tried off the menu and she mentioned about 4 dishes - potentially she might have tried them all, but that was insignificant - it helped me make my choice. The waiter also upsold that sides were all $11 but 3 for $27. The sizing of the sides was very decent and we did not need but quite enjoyed all 3 - rocket and pear salad, beef dripping potatoes, seasonal greens with shards of parmesan. the entrees were decent - pork belly bites (3 pieces) and king prawns (3 pieces and were quite small) , but probably overpriced around $28 ea. The zesty lime and oil dressing on the prawns was very nice though!! Mains were a medium rare newyork strip and a beef ragout. disappointingly the strip came out well done - no pink at all and we were told they would quickly make another one BUT when you order dry aged, medium rare looks well done!!!! it tasted well - done, that was the problem - $58 280g steak way overcooked. The replacement was divine - a zesty chimmichurra, gorgeous, perfectly cooked steak that was well presented. they also 'comped' my next Furphy. Dessert was a tiramasu semifreddo with chocolate chards - perfectly ok, but essentially $17 for a scoop of ice cream. underwhelming, but ok. In the end, we loved the view, loved the food and the service was very decent - i would thoroughly recommend it for a...
Read moreThis was my second time in just over 12 months of staying at the Oval Hotel (which I like) and following up the stay with breakfast at Bespoke.
Last visit (January 2021) I was unimpressed with the breakfast. Found the menu mostly uninspiring and not inline with the prices. However the service was the standout. I did think it was perhaps a bad day and the hotel was relatively new then.
This time I booked in with other family members to celebrate my 50th and once again, was very disappointed. The menu options, the presentation and the cost of the dishes do not correspond with the way the hotel markets itself. Granted the rooms are well appointed and for me they sit in the 4 1/2 to 5 star category. But the breakfast on offer at Bespoke is on par with 3 star and an additional start lost due to what appears to be inexperienced wait staff (for the second time in 12 months). The wait staff serving us were like deer in the headlights when you asked them for things that should never have needed to be asked for. For example out of 8 breakfasts, 6 of them came out wrong. Tea was served without milk and no-one at the table had been asked or advised that they didn't want milk.
Bespoke is in such a prime location overlooking the prestigious oval that it really is perplexing how this restaurant is not up to scratch with the rest of the hotel and its surroundings. I can't comment on lunch or dinner as I have only ever had breakfast.
But for comparisons sake, I was booked in for breakfast the following day at Topiary Cafe part of Newman's Nursery in TTG. My god what an amazingly different breakfast experience. That food belongs in a place like Bespoke. It was aesthetically appealing and options were innovative and and delicious backed up by competent staff and the price was almost too cheap compared to Bespoke.
As much as I like staying at the Oval Hotel, I doubt that I will again because of the Bespoke experience which when I stay somewhere I like to book into the breakfast and ultimately I am not going to pay 5 star prices for a breakfast that simply does not cut...
Read moreWe had very high expectations, and sadly they were not met. Came here for both dinner and breakfast while staying at the oval hotel. The food was nice, but that’s it. Not spectacular, not life altering. Service was good at dinner time, although when we asked for a dessert suggestion I felt I was offered what the chef wanted to get rid of rather than what would most satisfy me. Now for breakfast. Service was terrible. The moment we walk in the Team Leader (name starts with J) is on the phone and while I understand she’s busy, she doesn’t even acknowledges us with a smile or a nice look. We requested to be seated by the windows to see the stadium, which was a reasonable request since the restaurant wasn’t busy. She didn’t like it and said it’d take 10 minutes to set, when the table was empty and clean. She showed the menus and we asked to have a moment to see the options, she left and it took 15 minutes to get our order taken. We tried to get the waiters’ attention without luck. I would understand if the place was full or they were understaffed, but I saw 6 waiters on shift and less than 7 tables seated. We arrived at 9:20 am and our food was served at 9:55 on a Wednesday morning. I shared my concern to this team leader and she didn’t seem to care. Food was nice but again not spectacular. Another remark to share is that we booked breakfast under the promise that we would have continental breakfast and a choice from the menu, choice of filter coffee and juices (this was specified at the time of booking) and on arrival we are told we’re only allowed one juice and a dish from the menu. This is false advertisement, raises the expectations of a guest and deems the same for disappointment. Overall, bespoke is high expectations medium delivery, on both food experience and service. I wouldn’t recommend this restaurant to a friend visiting town. The hotel on the other hand is fantastic! Bespoke needs to raise the standards to match the elegance and sharpness...
