Me and a group of friends attended the doll day club on Saturday 21/12/2024 for a birthday. We paid $99 dollars for the bottomless drinks pack for 3 hours which you do receive your monies worth I will say.
That atmosphere was lovely along with the view looking out over the north.
The service from the staff on the balcony was one of the most in pleasant experiences we have ever had. In particularly from a man in a blue shirt and a wide brimmed hat.
Upon arrival we were told that we could sit at the table just inside the bifold doors and continue with services as if we were on the out side deck.
The first encounter with the man as mentioned above, we were waiting in line and could see that we were clearly next, decided to leave us standing there for further time, and when he was finally ready to serve, chose to serve a couple of other people who had just walked up. When he finally served us, he rudely accused one of the people from our group of not having a wrist band for the package (understandably he may not have seen it) and when they showed the wrist band to him, says to them as if they were such an inconvenient āfine, what do you want thenā.
A couple more rounds go past and we were being served by the female staff. They were lovely, however seemed to be a bit confused with what was included in the package and what wasnāt but were nice enough about everything.
The next encounter with the male server in question, we ordered a couple of cocktail jugs. He said in such an aggressive manner āyouāre site inside we wonāt serve these to your table, go order from the staff insideā. Mind you we had previously ordered from here and have had the cocktail jugs brought to the table. As we had already been served we said to the man, āthatās fine we will just wait and take them to our table ourselfā. He said āno, ho order insideā. Eventually we ended up having the drinks made and we took them to our table ourselves.
When weāre ready for the next cocktail jugs, we went to the bar inside. The staff said āsorry, you need to order at the outside bar as we donāt have the cocktail jugs at this barā.
Needless to say you can have a great view and atmosphere but when youāre faced with hospitality workers that treat you as a chore, even when that is their job - not worth the time or money. Was overall a very disappointing day.
Also the cocktails had a strange taste, almost soapy. But that could be due to the dishes being...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreWe had high hopes walking into the Sol Restaurant given the hype and glowing reviews. However, our experience didn't quite live up to this. As already mentioned in a couple other reviews, the setting is great. Beautiful views, the decor itself is simple and elegant and the restaurant is well shielded from the bar (except the shared bathroom which suffer from that - drunk clientele stumbling in, no soap...). However, the great experience stops there. The chairs are fine, but avoid the bench area at all cost - not comfortable for a meal that will last 2+ hours if you opt for the 7-course option. We had 6 people taking turns tending to our table which resulted in our water choice going from sparkling (original) to still without any request from us or questions asked. On the other hand we were asked (and confirmed) 4 times whether we wanted more alcohol - we did not. We had the seven course meal. The presentation was absolutely amazing but most dishes left us confused. This is modern/experimental cuisine at its height, but falls short in terms of flavours. We loved the fact that everything is local and that Sol touts itself for minimizing, even eliminating organic waste as much as possible. Both very commendable, however, here, at the expense of flavour. The mini canapes in appetizer were well done and highly enjoyed. The rest fell flat until dessert. The oyster mushrooms were, as someone else mentioned, greasy and lack any flavour. The highlight was definitively the charred eggplant side to the lamb dish. The pork belly looked wonderful but was very dry. The bread and butter presented upfront were taken away before we had even finished them! The squid dish was possibly the most interesting in terms of texture and flavour. Dessert was also a nice touch. It did feel a bit much like a piece of art.
Overall, for the price paid, the service varied too much from one person to the next, the food was experimental and visually pleasing but not a success. Of note, the wine list is quite good. I would not recommend going back to the restaurant until the menu is worked on and includes flavour in addition to esthetics. This is gastronomy pushed one step too far at the...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreDinner at @solrooftop: excellent food and service! We had the 7 course dinner, and I have to say that it is worthwhile staying longer to have it rather than the 4 course. All the dishes were very creative and super tasty. Some were a bit unusual, but still very enjoyable. . Mussels: on an edible shell - very creative and tasty š¤¤. . Sourdough bread: good bread with delicious butter! . Chicken liver parfait: this was really good! Flavours were like a party in your mouth. Loved these snacks! . Sardines with asparagus: the sardines were good, not too strong with the fish taste. Worked very well with the asparagus š¤¤. . Summer garden lollies: strawberry, bread soaked in tomato oil - this was an unusual but interesting dish. The ingredients are not what your would normally have together, but I think it worked quite well. The combination of the sweetness of the strawberries and the tanginess of the tomato worked well. . Oyster mushrooms: salt and pepper tempura, hay yoghurt, and a dusting of hay. This was one of our favourite dishes! We always love mushrooms, and these were so tasty! It was lightly fried with tempura batter - not heavy or oily at all. Good presentation as well, but the hay does get a little bit messy š š . . Butter poached king prawn, fermented fennel, prawn head and tail crumbs. Super yummy prawns! Cooked perfectly. Great flavours. . Squid with its ink, kohralbi, inked avocado, lemongrass. This was an interesting dish. The squid was really nicely done, and the inked avocado was creative. But sure how I feel about the lemongrass though. . Pork belly, asparagus, blackened eggplant, shaved egg yolk: we loved this dish! Definitely one of the favourites. The pork belly was super tender, and the flavours from the eggplant and shaved egg yolk were amazing š. . Lamb backstrap (chargrilled), multiple preparations of carrots (puree, pickled), labneh: the lamb was very nicely chargrilled. It had a tasty smokey flavour. The different kinds of carrots were very creative. Perfect! . Concrete jungle: meringue, frozen lemon curd, apple: this dessert dish was so creative!! We loved the tanginess of the lemon curd and the sweetness of the meringue...
