We thought we would try the newly refurbished Union Bridge Brewery on Franklin.
The drinks menu was attractive +1⭐️ We started with the duck liver parfait and crostini which was really promising. I really liked how the crostini was slightly salted to balance out the parfait. +1⭐️
My dining partner had the venison ragu which was really tender and will be recommended to friends. +1⭐️
The wood-fired duck breast with roasted sweet potato, pickled beetroot and snow pea pesto sounded so promising. But sadly, it read far better than eating it. The duck breast was well-cooked. If you like a smoky flavour, you might enjoy this. I thought the smokiness over-powered the duck so much that there was no flavour of the natural sweetness of what were two beautiful pieces of duck. It helped when I removed the skin and ate the duck with the roasted sweet potato. The pickled beetroot was not pickled enough because a bit more acid would have balanced the amount of smokiness as well. Having said all that, what ruined the dish entirely was the snow pea pesto: it was too salty. Together with the heavily smoked duck, it left the palette feeling like a dead weight had been placed on it. It would have been better if the snow peas had been steamed or even fresh. My meal was made even worse by my own choice of wine - I had a glass of the Anvers Sauvignon Blanc - it was a pairing made in hell. A full-bodied red might have helped although the heavy smoking and that salty snow pea pesto just needs less done to it. -3⭐️
We will return because there are interesting things to drink and to try the Picanha which is a cut of beef.
They are re-launching the restaurant in May, so hopefully the menu will be...
Read moreFirst off, the staff here are awesome. They were super accommodating and friendly and really go above and beyond to ensure you have a great experience. Next, there is something for everyone on tap, with an excellent variety of quality beers & sparkling. We even shared a bottle of their limecello which was delicious. The food is truly amazing. Every plate is mouth wateringly exquisite. There is no dedicated vegan offering for mains which is a miss, but there are options so no one will go hungry. Finally, the venue space has all options covered, including street tables, front bar, dining room & beer garden, so you can choose your ambience. We were in the beer garden, which is a fabulous space. There wasn't any, but it's a perfect setting for live music, & it definitely would have made our...
Read moreThe owners are combining a brewery bar with a gourmet restaurant. The food offerings are quite inappropriate for a brewery bar and for a gourmet restaurant the wine list is manifestly inadequate (read terrible).
Other than my group, there were no other patrons (clue), so the food had to come from the freezer. And it tasted so. My salmon was dry with a watery tasteless sauce. Others were similarly unimpressed with their food.
I've had fun in brewery bars and enjoyed many gourmet restaurants but this particular marriage just...
