Kafenio in Brisbane is a true gem for anyone seeking authentic Greek cuisine, and as a Greek myself, dining here was like a delightful journey back to my roots. This charming restaurant deserves heartfelt praise for its exceptional offerings, particularly the souvlaki and traditional Greek salad (or "horiatiki.")
The souvlaki at Kafenio is incredibly good, a testament to the culinary authenticity that this establishment strives for. Each bite of the souvlaki was a perfect blend of well-seasoned, tender meat and supple flavour. It's a dish that resonates with the flavours of Greece, making it a standout item on their menu.
Equally impressive was their horiatiki. This traditional Greek salad was a refreshing and flavorful mix of juicy tomatoes, crisp cucumbers, sharp red onions, and balanced by well-brined kalamata olives, and creamy yet bitey feta, all brought together with a drizzle of olive oil and a sprinkle of oregano. It's the simplicity yet perfection in the balance of these fresh ingredients that makes this salad essential.
The overall atmosphere of Kafenio adds to the dining experience, with its warm and inviting vibe. It feels like a little piece of Greece right in the heart of Brisbane, making it a special place not just for Greeks, but for anyone who appreciates genuine Greek cuisine.
In summary, Kafenio is not just a restaurant; it's a culinary experience that transports you to Greece with its flavours and oddly authentic ambience. I can't recommend it enough for anyone in Brisbane looking for an authentic Greek dining experience. Whether it's the souvlaki, the horiatiki, or any other dish, Kafenio is sure to impress.

Read moreLast time, never again. I should of understood by my phone call today. It took over 5mins to try to get 2 girls to understand me,at the end they took a totally incorrect name and telephone number. When we got there, we had booked for outside, once again they had booked us inside. I then spoke to the head chef, Cypriot lady and she said, we have been booked out since 2 days ago, great customer service with that response. Luckily one of the Nepalese girls gave us a table outside. Food portions were smaller than previous times, chips looked secondhand and tasted cold and old, meat was ok, salad was ok. Sweets were delicious and pomply served. Sadly dips are store bought as I could see the tubs of Chris's Tsatidki, tarama and eggplant, very authentic. Once we left, my sister was sick with diarrhoea and vomiting, was it something she ate, which was souvlaki and Chris's dips, can't say however, strange. I saw the head chef lady, come back in after a cigarette and did not wash her hands!! Olive oil stored in Preloved Powerade bottles. Once we left, we realised 30mins later, we had forgotten an item of clothing, I called for them to set it aside. When we got there, the clothing piece was still on the chair, after 1 hour. Service was very slow and they could not understand, which is very frustrating to say the least. The culture of the restaurant is reflective of the culture of the staff, which is anything but Greek! I understand this review sounds shocking, but it's true, sadly, coming from a fellow Greek, that does not want to dirty a...
Read moreThe food was ok. But honestly I was rather disgusted when we went to the counter to pay the bill. Being an open kitchen or any kitchen wether it’s open or closed it was filthy. It actually made me wonder if I was going to start feeling sick later. Seeing the kitchen staff with no food handling gloves on , no hair nets or their hair pouring out of their hat if they were wearing one…and putting raw meat and seafood directly on the edge of the stove top before cooking. That’s just disgusting. The kitchen needs an extremely deep clean, there’s dust and oil that looks like it’s been there for months…. Where’s the food safety practices, where’s the care factor in this establishment???The front counter where you pay was absolutely woeful. It was a pigsty. Also the menus on a clip board, really needs to be reconsidered how you present your menu. One more thing …. Seeing staff go for a cigarette in their work clothing in the front part infront of guests is gross. The one good thing is the staff were very friendly and service was quick. It’s just the other points which made me...
