I'm in Western Australia for the first time over from Melbourne and decided to pop down from Fremantle to visit the Busselton Jetty.
We discovered this absolute gem called Shelter Brewing Co right on the Busselton foreshore which was a sight for thirsty travelers after doing the 1.8km walk both ways of the jetty!
The beer mostly caters towards local tastes here in WA with many pale ale options, being a tourist destination it would be nice to have a dark beer option that they could brew in house, however I did enjoy the Red Ale on tap here at Shelter.
The Pizza was quite nice, it emulates a Neapolitan style pizza, which is how pizza is intended to be with limited toppings and a focus on quality ingredients (rather than 'Anglo Pizza' full to the brim with toppings) however with some very minor modifications to this pizza, the kitchen at Shelter would be able to serve up a bang on perfect Neapolitan style pizza.
Just some suggestions to the kitchen for the pizza to get it perfect (it's still quite good! Don't take this as negative feedback!)
The base was thin however the crust was crunchy rather than chewy, if the dough recipe was changed to use a type 00 high protein pizza flour and allowed to ferment in the fridge prior to being used for a few days, it would be bang on to what a Neapolitan type pizza base is like with a chewy rather than crunchy base.
The prosciutto was a bit thick with a lot of fat, having a thick slice of the prosciutto takes away from its taste and the fat overpowers the flavor of the base and the other ingredients on the pizza.
If the prosciutto was changed to San Daniele prosciutto that was cut razor thin and then most of the excess fat removed, it would allow the more delicate flavors of the prosciutto to come out.
Even if the price of the pizza had to come up by a few dollars to accommodate these changes in ingredients, they would make a huge difference to the Pizza and it would go from being 'good' to 'great!'
Finally the front of house staff are fantastic at Shelter and they complete the experience, without a good front of house team you can't have a good experience as a customer, so credit where credit is due, keep up the great work your efforts are noticed.
Five stars, I enjoyed my time here at Shelter, the prices are cheap as well (comparative to Melbourne), the service is good and you won't be disappointed...
Read moreIf I could I would give this zero stars! On holiday for Easter and tried to go to the Shelter on 2 consecutive evenings with no luck. The first evening we arrived at 8.45pm and waited atleast 10 minutes with atleast 4 staff walking pass and ignoring us. We only wanted to check if the kitchen was still open and we were met by an abrupt NO by what seemed to be the manager. We tried a restaurant next door who mentioned that their kitchen at the shelter should be open until 10pm, as they stay open late on Saturdays. So one of my mates went back in to check 20 minutes later at the coffee section and the girl behind the counter said the kitchen should be open as the bar only closes after 10pm and there is plenty of space to grab a seat but double checked with another staff member who mentioned the kitchen has just closed 5 minutes ago. Based on that we can only assume they did not want to serve a party of 5 BLACK PEOPLE.
On the following evening we went to try again to get a table for dinner to give them a second chance, and there was a line. The 2 groups in front of us we given tables without booking and when it got to us the young girl at the entrance was trying to find a place as their upstairs section was closed and not taking any more orders even though there was atleast 4 tables occupied upstairs. She then proceeded to find and ask her manager (the same guy from the night before). Soon as he saw us, he didnt even look to find any tables available and said they are fully booked other than 1 table out the front next to a door. As we left, we could see from outside there were a number of available tables in the outside seating area that were not reserved which we could sit at. Basically this manager racially profiled us and would not allow a group of 6 tanned individuals to dine in the restaurant. Worst service, worst management and worst case of racial profiling for a restaurant I have ever come across! I would NOT RECOMMEND The Shelter to anyone, and I WILL NEVER TRY AND DINE AT THIS ESTABLISHMENT...
Read moreShelter is the gem of Busselton. It resides in a beautifully architected sand designed building near the beach. The beer is fantastic but what struck me most is the quality and execution of the food. This is the kind of food where you only need to see and taste one or two dishes to know that the food was carefully and thoughtfully crafted and every detail considered. The menu elevates what many consider to be ordinary and everyday dishes like pizza, burgers and fish. Even the salads amaze. Great beer, fantastic environment and hats off to the chef!
Shelter is a gem in Busselton that I stumbled upon while exploring the area. As soon as I saw the beautifully designed sand building near the beach, I knew I was in for a treat. The moment I stepped inside, I was struck by the friendly and welcoming atmosphere, and the fantastic selection of beers on offer.
But what really impressed me the most was the quality and execution of the food. It's clear that the chef has put a lot of thought and care into every dish, elevating what would otherwise be considered ordinary and everyday foods. From the crispy and flavorful fried fish burger to the delicious pizzas and fresh fish, every dish was crafted with attention to detail.
Even the salads were a revelation - fresh, crunchy, and flavourful. It's rare to find a restaurant with great salads!
Overall, I highly recommend Shelter for anyone looking for a memorable dining experience in Busselton. With great beer, fantastic environment, and top-notch food, it's the perfect spot for a night out or a special occasion. Kudos to the chef for creating such a unique and...
