Went for a walk Tuesday night and came across this restaurant that seemed quite busy compared to others along the street so we thought we'd give it a go.
The restaurant had a great vibe with friendly service, a nice interior and the sound of people talking and laughing and just having a great time. All ticks so far, unfortunately for us it turned out that these factors were the only good thing about the night....
We first ordered the fried veg momos which looked lovely but lacked flavour and filling and this came with a nice looking dipping sauce but lacked also lacked any real flavour. We tried adding a bit of table salt to the sauce which helped a little but there's only so much salt can do to bring out flavour when added so late to the dish. We expected the momo filling would have the flavour ginger, garlic, coriander, onion, spices and perhaps a little chilli but you'd be hard pressed to identify any of those in what was given to us. The sauce can only be described as bland. I spent a few minutes just tasting the sauce and trying to see if I could single out any flavours but again I really struggled to taste anything.
We then received our chicken sekuwa and rejoiced because we also finally received flavour! The chicken had a nice char with a smokey and fragrant flavour and the dipping sauce had a nice tang which was mentioned on the menu. That said, I think it was around fifteen dollars for maybe ten small pieces of chicken and with the current cost of living I don't think it was worth it or as satisfying as the chicken skewers you'd get from other restaurants at that price.
We finished our meal with the Nepalese chicken curry with garlic naan. The naan was nice but we couldn't really see any garlic. The curry was as described in the menu... ie just plain chicken and gravy and perhaps this was our mistake because we really did expect more. Again the portion size seemed a little off at around 20 dollars for a small bowl of curry with around ten small pieces of chicken. We definitely struggled to use the four pieces of naan on the entire serving of curry and usually the problem is the other way around where you find yourself having to order more naan.
Overall we didn't have the best experience. Perhaps we were silly and ordered the wrong dishes (but why have things on the menu if you can't be sure if their quality). Perhaps it was an off night for the kitchen. I really wanted to like tis restaurant and will definitely give it another go later on but to me it seems like a place that's dialling back it's authentic tastes in an effort to cater to a broader audience and if that's the case I'll always choose Canberra Fast Food and Momo House over in...
Read moreThe atmosphere and décor was quite nice. The food and service were generally nice but there were some instances that left us less than satisfied. The staff were friendly enough but there was a miscommunication when ordering the special momo platter. We requested a split of vegetarian and chicken momos, under the assumption that there would a bit mixture of vegetarian and chicken momos prepared in different ways. What we weren't told until after being served, was only the fried momos in the platter could be vegetarian. Which is confusing as their menu offers both vegetarian and meat momos prepared in different ways. This restricted what one of my friends was able to eat as they are vegetarian. In addition, we requested rice and naan bread with our dishes. Upon not receiving the naan bread, we asked if that was ordered and we were advised naan bread is only served in the evening. Another confusing miscommunication. The remaining food we ordered were quite delicious, but they serving sizes were underwhelming considering the price. One other minor instance was it took multiple attempts to get the attention of the staff so we could ask for more water. My assumption was if an empty bottle was seen, it would be replaced at some point. Overall, it was a pleasant experience but I would hope the service could...
Read moreDuring a recent visit to the city with my friend, we ordered momo, a Newari kaja set, and Nepali salad. However, there was some confusion regarding the Newari kaja set as they provided chicken instead of buff. When I informed them about the mix-up, they took it very seriously and offered us a buff chohela. I mentioned that we were content with the chicken as well, but their excellent gesture impressed us.
I was pleased with the chicken/ buff chohela and found the overall food to be delicious. The ambiance of the place was great, and the staff were incredibly kind. Unfortunately, I couldn't express my gratitude properly in person as my friend and I were engrossed in a serious conversation.
Through this review, I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to the staff. I hope that your exceptional service and food quality will remain consistent. Once again, thank you!
