This place is a short walk from my work, so since the Wig and Pen closed down, this is a "go to pub". The decor and posters are top notch! It's got a really nice old pub feel. Lots of seats outside too that are great during the warmer months. The food is also of a great quality. I've had burgers from here in the past and they've always been great. Lately I've been indulging on their Aranchini - be sure to ask for extra sauce because they only ever provide a thimble of sauce on each ball otherwise.
Now unfortunately this place also has some downfalls. The choice in beers is often only between two or three brands (Hawke brewing, Young Henrys, and maybe a Bentspoke or Capital brewing tap). The inside of this place always has a slight scent of parmesan cheese... Or vomit. This could be due to the old furniture that is likely seldom cleaned. The toilets have broken locks on the cubicles (at least in the men's toilet did the last time I visited). The service from staff is also quite spotty. Sometimes you get a great server who is happy to take your order, or apologetic when dealing with order mix-ups (every restaurant has mix ups at some point). But most of my experience with their staff had been rushed and rude. And almost every time I've eaten here, someone at my table has been waiting for their food... Even after complaining, the food will come out after everyone else has finished. And when complaining the staff have walked off in a huff and then plonked the plate on our table when it was ready. One time (in 2017) we were waiting for a bowl of chips, we waited over 35 minutes before going to the counter and telling them not to worry about it and to cancel it. Our other food items came out within 10 minutes.
Overall it's a quaint little pub that serves great food with great decor. But the cleanliness and service could do with...
Read moreI visited this place for the first time yesterday with a work colleague and ordered a pint and schooner of a Pale from their bar Tap. I presented him my credit card to pay for the 2 drinks and he took the card and swiped it.
5 mins later (When colleague visited the gents) I checked to see what the guy charged me for the 2 drinks from my online account only to find out that he charged me $28!
I went to the bar and ask another bartender (as the original guy that served me wasn't present) how much it cost for a pint and Schooner of what I bought and he said it was $6 for a Schooner and $10 for a Pint. So I told the guy I was charged $28 instead $16 and all he could say to me was, "you need to talk to the guy that served me" (The look on his face told me that he knew this type of thing happens all the time in this place) and then walked off to serve someone else.
All I can say is, to rip a customer off for an extra $12 profit and to lose them for a lifetime is pretty damn stupid! Secondly, I will spread this across incident to everyone I know across Canberra so that they don't step foot in this place ever again and who knows how many other they will spread it to, as this scam might happen to them too. So that's 100's of customer you have also lost out on for an extra $12 profit.
I hope you think twice about scamming your customers from now on!
Its a shame that I cannot give this place 0 stars for this filthy act and I just wonder how many others have also been...
Read moreI'm so disappointed. I came out for my anniversary dinner as pjs was where we had our first date. $70 per person for a 1.5 hr booking. I was happy to pay this as I understand that during restrictions that as a business you have to make up money to pay bills and staff. My major disappointment was the fact there was no steaks, my booking was at 6.30, very disappointing that a pub runs out of streaks so early.
I understand this is hard times but how much alcohol do you expect me to drink in 1.5 hrs to make up $70 as it seems you only have cheap schnitzels left.
I am glad you gave me a refund no questions asked but I'm so disappointed that I came all the way to the city for an anniversary dinner to have to leave with no food as no where in the city had any reservations left. $50 wasted an uber...
