Mothers day...evenimg.

Walked in, no waitress at all? Noboby to greet you? Went to the counter and eventually talked to not smiling, not happy lady. She tells us, you can only sit outside, everything else is booked and it is a buffet. We go sit down and wait at a table, not made ready. We wait and wait, but nothing happens? What is the arrangement/ process etc. Quite confusing, some bowls, near the food...lots of plates in another area, but a ' staff only" sign at them? No wait staff to ask? I am walk back to the desk, waiting to speak to the lady again. I want to ask her how it works ? I am waiting in line and she serves a man who came, behind me and he eventually pays? I wait. Then another person, comes over, like I was not there and she serves them, infront of me??? I wait and move up, the people ahead, take a long time to be served. My turn, so just trying to work it out, because there is virtually no service, I ask " Do I pay now or later" she tells me now. I say, Oh, we should have paid, when we were up here before"? Thinking, maybe that is why we did not get served? Then I thought, no,..She did not ask? Then she angrily said " I didn't know, I thought you were just looking" We have already spoken, she had told us about available tables, we have sat down??? She looks angry and is horrible. I tell her, that we do not know what to do, or how it works? This is completely ignored and I get absolutely nothing? She rings up the sale, I apparently, put my card on the machine too early for her liking and she nastily and agressively and with no politeness, tells me so. I start to lose my patiance and tell her " I don't want to go on with it now" meaning having my comments. *In reality... you do not have to wait for the operator, to give you the go ahead, if you are " early" with the card, once the machine is ready, it will pick it up. I wihdrawl my card and await her. She tell me, she is ready and it now asks me to put in a pin. This is all stressful and I do not appreciate her attitude at me, with other customers waiting. Just before I put in my pin number, she goes into loud, angry mode, now telling me, if I put the card early, it will misread it? Why go on with it? Could have paid, initially? Why talk like that, its moved on to the putting my pin in stage? I say to her " In a minute, I don't think, I will bother" she loudly and angrily, " well that is your choice" i walk back to.my waiting daughter and her mum...on mothers day and I explain " lets go, that woman is crazy"

No service, nobody cares, confusing, the service you do get, you have to work out first, nobody's coming, go to the counter, just to be spoken to out of turn, its your fault, they did not charge you? They cannot work out, that after going to them, at the counter, them telling you about the table, you going there, you actually want food? At a restaurant?? Or is it just, there is no staff?

Worst arrangement and customer service, I have seen in my life, in a restaurant. Cannot comment on the service, because there almost was not any. Talked to like rubbish, disrespected. Woman at the counter, is a nasty " B". This place is a mess, don't go there...especially a important event, with...

Kubo's in Southport comes highly recommended by some Filipino friends for awesomely authentic Filipino cuisine. It was certainly popular and we could only book for an early lunch at 11am because the 12:30pm sitting was already full. Good thing we did book as I saw a number of walk-in customers turned away.

We ordered: lechon kawali (crispy deep fried pork belly), $22.80 lumpiang Shanghai (spring rolls), $8.80 tokwat baboy, $16.80 - boiled pork pieces, deep-fried tofu cubes and dipping mixture of vinegar, soy sauce, shallots and chili peppers crispy calamari, $7.80 chicken bucket (dozen), $21.80 - crispy fried chicken, hand-tossed with one of 3 sauces, of which we chose the honey garlic chicken & pork sinugba (grilled meat) platter, $54.80 - combination of pork and chicken barbeque skewers, inihaw na liempo (grilled pork belly), and insal na manok (grilled marinated chicken) pork barbeque skewers, $20.80 canton bihon (stir fried egg and rice noodles), $17.80 kaldiro (rice; 1 pot), $10

Wow. Full feast mode! My favourites were the fried and marinated chicken elements, followed by the pork skewers and the pork belly dish. Will have to try the crispy pata (house specialty of deep fried pig knuckle) another time, as it was out of stock when we visited.

We also bought some desserts to bring home for afternoon tea:

leche flan (crème caramel), $9.80 | This was my favourite and I left it for last cos I've had it before so knew it should be awesome, and this one certainly was. puto leche, $9.50 | combining some of the custard element of the leche flan with a layer of steamed bun / cake. It was an unfamiliar pairing but with familiar elements. The cake layer balances out the sweetness of the custard layer - second favourite. pandan braso, $7.50 | This is a meringue roll with custard filling. The full name (brazo de Mercedez) means "Arm of Our Lady of Mercy" in Spanish and the dessert dates back to Spanish colonial times. This version had pandan flavouring and whilst it was nice to try I initially thought this was a cake roll and didn't realise it was meringue until cutting into it. Overall I prefer desserts with firmer texture and a bit more bite.

There are a lot more options in their dessert cabinet though so I'll look forward to sampling others in the range on future visits. Any suggestions for what to try next?

Our total bill was just shy of $240 (for 6 adults and 6 kids) - we were all quite full and left with a box of leftovers plus some desserts for later (more next post). This has definitely got me keen to check out their newer Brisbane branch which is a much closer option. Hopefully the mixed reviews of that store and reports of service issues will have all settled by the...

1 year later from last time🤗 I had Palabok today🥳 I had no idea what it tasted like 🤔 It looked already delicious when it was served🥰 The first mouthful was without squeezing lemon🍋 🤩🤩🤩🤩It’s delicious 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩 It's hard to describe the taste… It's not a strong seasoning 😁👍🏻 Very easy to have it first time everyone 🥳 Then after squeezing lemon… I love it🥰🥰🥰 The noodle was like a bit hard grass noodles?????🤣 It's a healthy dish, I think🤗 I’d love to try more of their noodle dishes next time🥳🥳🥳

4 months after 🤗 I had Grilled Maryland Chicken at lunchtime price 🥳 They have a lot of single-serve menus now😁 That is so good for me 🤩 I loved this dish🥳🥳🥳 The chicken was flavorful, tender and jucy🤩 I loved the citrus (?) vinegary sauce as well 😚👍🏻 Friendly service 👍🏻 Definitely, I’ll be back for trying their dish.

A year later 🤗 They’ve move to the next door??? It’s spacious now. I got Grilled pork dish for takeaway. I wanted to pay by cash but they got trouble with resister 😞 I wanted to get the receipt but they got trouble with the machine 😔 Oh dear…. Bad luck this time….. Pork was so nice flavored 🥳 Some chewy parts but that’s ok. If I get more salad with it more happier 😋 I might try some lunch menu next time. If they still have….

It’s my first visit and first try to have Filipino here. I had Lumpiang $12.5 and Chicken Adobo $24.5 with steamed rice $3. Their prices are updated ⤴️ The sizes are for sharing 😓 It’s not suitable for solo lunch 😔 Lumpiang were nice with salad for refreshing ☺️ Chicken Adobo….. mmm🤔 I expected a bit more sour flavor…. Kubo’s Bar and Grill on the Gold Coast offers a warm and authentic Filipino dining experience, enhanced by the friendly and attentive service. This was our first visit, and we were excited to try a few of their signature dishes. The **Bulalo**, a beloved Filipino soup, unfortunately didn’t live up to expectations. The portion of meat was meager, and the tendon was tough, sticking to the bone. The broth, while flavorful, was overwhelmed by the taste of fish sauce, overshadowing the savory richness typically associated with Bulalo. At its price point, the dish didn’t provide the value expected. However, the **Tokwa’t Baboy** was exceptional. The presentation was spot on, and the combination of crispy tofu and tender pork brought a comforting, home-style flavor that was truly nostalgic. It was like being back in the Philippines. The only downside was that the serving size was relatively small for the price. The **Pancit Bihon** was another highlight. Its familiar, savory taste was reminiscent of home-cooked meals, perfectly seasoned and well-balanced. This dish alone made us feel right at home, and it’s well worth its price. As for dessert, I highly recommend the **Ube Cheesecake**. The texture is superb, smooth and creamy, melting in your mouth with every bite. The added layer of thin crust at the base provides just the right amount of crunch, elevating the entire experience. Overall, Kubo’s offers excellent service and an authentic Filipino atmosphere, but a bit of improvement in portion sizes and value for some dishes could enhance the dining experience even further.
