Rama 5 Thai Restaurant — Restaurant in Gold Coast City

Very disappointing. Phoned restaurant one week earlier to book a table for 6 on a Saturday evening. Advised the person taking booking that it was a special occasion, and would like a table inside out of the wind. The girl advised that would be fine. On arrival I was told that there was no booking, and the table we could have got was given to someone else. The only table available was in-front of the open doorway, in the breeze and people walking by to pickup take away and people paying for their bill at the counter. Further, we ordered the meal I asked for 4 wine glasses and a bucket of ice. These did not come and after about 10 minutes, asked again and 4 glasses and ice bucket was dumped on the table. When the bill was paid they charged us $22 (for 4 people) for corkage. That was just a rip off. I was very embarrassed to have taken my friends here for dinner. Wow, I don’t think I have ever seen such horrible service. It was so horrible it was almost funny and I kept looking around to see if maybe there were prank cameras. We were a group of 8 people and we all ate at different times regardless of having ordered at the same time. One person finished eating and the next one got their plate, I think we stayed 2 hours and not by choice. Our table was piling with dirty plates and nobody would come by to pick them up. We had to get up multiple times to go ask for ice. Not a smile. At one point my husband ordered a dish and the lady came by 30 minutes later to take another order because the dish was not available. Then she ended up coming back and saying oh no wait it is available here it is. Nobody smiles, nobody says 1 more word than they are supposed to. Had a great meal here last night. It was very busy, but we did manage to get a table inside and they were also constantly serving takeaways. We had the chicken satay for a shared entree between three of us. Best Satay I have had and we have lived and travelled throughout Asia. For mains, chicken Pad Thai and red duck curry. Both meals were perfect. Lovely to get lychees in the curry and the duck was really tasty and tender. The Pad Thai was lovely and smoky as well, as tasty. Often they are bland. Lots of chicken too. They have a good wine and beer menu too at reasonable prices. The service was a bit slow, due I think to the amount of takeaways, but the food was well worth the wait.
