I’ve been to Code Black at Spencer before and really enjoyed the coffee. Hence, I really wanted to drink whilst in South Melbourne. Coffee was exceptional as always - I had the Dirty Coffee with freeze distilled milk & coconut cold brew with cream foam.

However, the service was extremely disappointing and vastly different from what I experienced at Spencer Street branch.

I went on 29 August at around 11.50pm and was greeted by a moody short haired Asian woman wearing glasses at the counter. Not welcoming whatsoever and was so rude to my friends and I when we wanted to find out about the drinks there as it was their first time. Although we had a seat outside, she told my friend that was ordering that the drinks would be in a takeaway cup. When I went in wanting to inform her that we are dining in and wanted it in a glass, she didn’t even give me the chance to say anything and immediately said “we will take your order outside.” So if she knew that we are dining in why did she offer our drinks in a take away cup?

I wanted to give her the benefit of doubt that maybe she had a bad day. But she was totally fine taking someone else’s order politely so I’m not sure what kind of discrimination I was facing.

Anyway, I still love the coffee here and would still support code black but highly unlikely would be returning to South Melbourne branch anytime soon due to the...

To say I was taken aback when this came to the table was an understatement. Code Black was a last minute choice for breakfast this morning and they had one of two options for kids. Eggs on toast or Hotcake and Berries.

$38 dollars later for a coffee, bacon and eggs on toast (with some kind of bean mixed in with it, god knows why) and the little one opted for Hotcake and syrup but with no Berries.

Not Hotcakes "plural" but just one (1) hotcake 🤦 I paid $8 for a single hotcake. You have got to be kidding me. Normally I'm not one to bother with the energy that it takes to leave a review, but if the product and price is exceptional and the service was amazing I'm going to tell everybody.

However, this was not the case today. I was absolutely livid they had the audacity to charge me the amount of money they did for a single hot cake and when I said to the waitress "oh just the one" she said "yep" and walked away.

I mean wouldn't you be even a little embarrassed about plating or serving that as a cook or waitress? I would.

You can keep your boujee scrambled eggs with yellow beans and your single...

They do late or other coffees with different coffee grounds or origin. If you don’t pick which origin, they’ll bring you a typical coffee though. Better to ask for their special ones! I have had special ones a few times and my favourite is the columbian origin one.

Downside, we have had our own pastries which we purchased from other shop in the market, but one of the staffs told us that we cannot have our pastries with their coffees and as we had our pastries, we must get a take away coffee. That was a bit disappointing! We sat and we got a coffee from them as I hate the take away cups but also bit disappointed as I couldn’t have my fav pastries with it. It was funny as the staff kept watching us to make sure we weren’t eating our pastries haha I guess she would have kicked us out if we touch them, haha.

I’d have expected more from a cafe which the price 10 to 20% more expensive than the typical coffee price range! Also, this wont stop us buying our pastries from our fav pastry shops, this will stop us to go...
