There is a certain expectation that comes when you book a restaurant within the Crown complex. The expectation is that the food and service will be first class. There are always exceptions to that rule and Lucky Chan is definitely one of those. We booked well in advance for our Mothers Day lunch and we were a group of 5. Upon arrival for the 11am Yum Cha sitting the place was packed.....but we were welcomed professionally and seen to our table. Now I won't put too finer point on this given current international tensions, but we were clearly seated in the 'Westerner's Section'. We passed another area to our left that seemed exclusively non westerner, if you get my drift. Odd. But as the lunch unfolded my concern was that our section did not have the pick of the waiting staff. We ordered 10 dishes from the Yum Cha menu. Only 6 ever arrived. It was chaos. Every single waiter who entered our area looked at our order docket (assuming they were looking at the table number?) Then they would wander around aimlessly from table to table looking at each docket and then wander off. Minutes later another waiter would repeat the process with the same dishes in hand. There was one waitress who literally did not put one dish on any table. The consequence of course was a lot of frustrated patrons and a lot of cold dishes sent back to the kitchen. In the end we complained and a more senior waiter literally went to the kitchen to return with our missing dishes. The table next to us would have sent a dozen dishes back. It was a shambles - and service like I have never seen within the Crown Complex. The food was good but the service was appalling and really took the shine off what was meant to be a special occasion.

GOOD YUM CHA WITH KIDS! Let's start by talking about why I personally haven't step foot in this establishment for over 20 years. Pricing. Now that's where Lucky Chan's has failed for me, having a reputation for being overpriced. Many yum cha connoisseurs would know that the waiting staff and chefs often jump from one place to another. At some stage you'll cram your way into Plume Doncaster, and see the same Chinese dude from the week before at Gold Leaf Sunshine. (For a moment I thought I was being racist.) This is very common, and you'll find the quality will only vary marginally because of this reason. Generally speaking, it's usually same same, bar a few superstars like Secret Kitchen in the city (whom I gave 1 star for their 60 min sitting. Shame). For Lucky Chan's, this visit was different. The service exceeding my expectations, the ambiance was perfect, and of course we're paying premium for the waterfront view. Except we're not. The total bill reflected any other bill I pick up at other yum cha tea houses. It then made me think, why have I been subjecting myself to this torturing queuing and speed eating when I could have been here by the water, sipping on tea in peace? Secret Kitchen is overrated. Will return soon.

Review of Lucky Chan – Melbourne Lucky Chan is an excellent spot for anyone looking for delicious Chinese cuisine with top-notch service. From the moment you walk in, the staff are incredibly attentive and ensure every request is met with a smile, making the dining experience even more enjoyable. The food is outstanding, with a menu full of flavorful dishes. The highlight for me was the crispy egg noodles with chicken and mushroom—perfectly cooked, packed with flavor, and an absolute must-try. The special fried rice was also fantastic, and the variety of fresh juices added a refreshing touch to the meal. The crispy noodles stood out as well, offering the perfect balance of texture and taste. The only Asian restaurant to offer forks and spoons without asking 😁😁. Overall, if you’re after great food, excellent service, and a welcoming atmosphere, Lucky Chan is definitely worth a visit. Highly recommended!

Broad daylight robbery!

We recently dined at Lucky Chan for yum cha, and while the atmosphere and environment were delightful, with a beautifully designed interior and layout, the food left much to be desired. Unfortunately, it was very average. The soup we ordered was particularly disappointing, with an overpowering burnt taste. To their credit, the staff did not charge us for it, which is the only reason I’m giving a 3-star review for service.

The pricing, however, was exorbitant. We spent $350, and the cost of drinks, especially tea, was unreasonably high. Tea is charged per person, which means that while a single diner might pay $4–$5 for the same teapot, a group is charged extra simply because more people are drinking. This felt unnecessary and excessive. Essentially, you are paying for extra mugs. Additionally, we ordered a Coke with ice, but the waiter forgot to bring it altogether.

That being said, this is Crown, so premium pricing is to be expected. However, Lucky Chan, if you are going to charge such prices, the quality of the food must match. Currently, it feels on par with shopping center Chinese food, which is unacceptable for the cost.

For comparison, we recently dined at Ging Thai, which is conveniently located near Lucky Chan. It was not only much cheaper but also far more delicious. If you’re looking for high-quality Asian cuisine in the area, I highly recommend giving Ging Thai a try instead.

Also, only visit this restaurant for the bathroom experience. Very clean and also the piano playlist was good 🤣. Only reason to visit stayed there for a solid 30...

Awful service with no apologies! Tonight we went out as a family for dinner being NYE. We arrived at 6pm, sat down. Ordered our meals at 6:10pm and STILL WAITING FOR OUR FOOD AT 7:30pm meanwhile watching people who were seated half hour after we arrived, eating their meals. Despite multiple questions on my part asking where is our food and eventually complaints, the manager kept saying “5 minutes!” Half our food FINALLY arrived, but now, one member of our family was eating whilst we were still waiting for basic Chinese food like beef and black bean to arrive. By the time it arrived, our rice was ice cold! This place DID NOT OFFER discount or replacement warm rice for the inconvenience and the fact they very clearly forgot our order. Will not return to this restaurant. Our bill was $265 for 1.5 hours of inconvenience and bad service for a family of 2 adults and 1 child. Very basic, non extravagant Chinese food shouldn’t cost that much. Portion sizes were awfully small, cocktails hardly had any alcohol in them and they cost $22 each! Avoid, spend your time and money elsewhere where you will receive better service, larger portions for your money and most importantly, a happy experience for your family at any other establishment. The manager at Lucky Chan did not seem to care about us and only focused on the large Chinese family at the table constantly ordering copious amounts of seafood and shell fish. They serve the dollar, not...
