When the waiter answers the door with "Hello, Friend," you should know this wont be your typical bar experience. The first time I went to coal and cedar I was reminded of a saloon from the gold rush era. The walls are covered in sepia portraits of native Americans and soldiers. The cowboys and Indians theme suits the tone of this speakeasy bar. I was sat at a high table. There are only three available and need to be pre booked. I was blown away by the waitresses ability to recommend something specifically for my taste . A nice, warm chocolate and oak flavoured whiskey during the winter time hit the spot. She was visibly overjoyed that I liked what she chose for me. She also made shots that aren't usually offered on the menu because my partner described his taste. Agent Orange. He ordered quite a few and theyre one of his favourites now..The service was prompt. The charcuterie board was perfect. My partner also commented on getting complementary olives while we waited for our drinks. Unexpected and very appreciated. It was top service that night. This was at about 8pm. The second time I went in it was a bit later in the evening. It was busier but service was still outstanding. This again was at a high table. The third and fourth time, well. There wasn't as much enthusiasm from the staff on those nights. The third time after booking a HT we were seated in a booth. There was no service with a smile. Service was slower and our waitress was possibly having a bad night. We left early after two drinks.

The last time we went we got seats on the floor tables at 10pm. It took considerably longer to get acknowledged as we sat next to the curtains. The music was turned up much louder on that night as well. We ordered a few cocktails and left. So it depends, time the night to go when it's less busy. It's also possible that I had a great two nights because of Brandy who wasn't on shift the...

Although I have immensely enjoyed a night or two at the Coal & Cedar in the past, I am absolutely disgusted at the sheer lack of professionalism shown by Ryan who has just told me that my booking has been arbitrarily cancelled just because we have too many people wanting to come along.

I help organise a social group, and suggested this venue as a destination. At first I had around a dozen people instantly interested, and contacted them via email to reserve a large table to cater for 15 patrons. They accepted the booking.

I then had another dozen people chime in and say that they wanted to come as well, so I booked another table for 10. This booking was also accepted by their online system.

We then had another handful ask if they could come, so I booked an additional table for five people via the online system. This booking was accepted.

Then I get an email from Ryan who tells me that despite these bookings being accepted, he is cancelling them all without consultation or warning. He says that this party exceeds their limit, despite each booking being accepted without question. To add insult to injury I receive an email saying that they can move us to a Sunday evening which will obviously not suit our party.

To say I am incredibly annoyed is an understatement. I now have to go and tell 25 or so people in my social group that this venue has backflipped on our booking and has simply cancelled our planned night out.

Thankfully, we found an alternative venue in town that is more...

Nice warm atmosphere, great when live music is playing, good drinks, saw 'Nic & his hip shots" play here. Awsome band to see in a place like this.

We had our work Christmas bash as a Cocktail masterclasses at Coal & Cedar and my colleagues have been talking about it ever since. Classic cocktails, with (believe it or not) informative lessons on each cocktail made including the liqueur and other ingredients. Afterward we enjoyed an antipasto platter while we finished the cocktails we'd made and by the end were in high and festive spirits. The staff were friendly, laid-back and knew their stuff, and while only a small speakeasy, as the night went on, more and more people came in to sit in a booth with their friends and casually enjoy cocktails and conversation. It was a small, dark area which adds to the mystery of having to text through a number at the door, which is inconspicuously located on the side of a building on a busy street in Newcastle. It was like stepping in from a completely different place. Loved it and cant wait to revisit.
