I had booked a table to celebrate our wedding anniversary, but unfortunately, the experience was far from what we hoped for.
We were seated next to the live entertainment, and while the website does mention the noise level, having to shout over the music just to have a conversation during dinner was unexpected and incredibly frustrating. As for the performer, they might want to reconsider their career – the singing left a lot to be desired.
When we were seated, we were handed both the drinks and food menus, and offered still or sparkling water. After about 15 minutes, a staff member came over to ask if we were ready to order. We chose our drinks first and then placed our food order about 10 minutes later. We went for the Grilled Aburi Szechuan Oysters, Peking Duck Tacos, and Pork & Prawn Wantons in Truffle Dashi Broth for starters, followed by the Char-Siew Pork Belly and Nanyang Chicken Chop for mains.
Our starters began arriving within 15 minutes, beginning with the Duck Tacos. They were advertised as “5 spice,” but unfortunately, they didn’t have the flavor punch I was expecting. Next came the Grilled Oysters, which were quite tasty, but the Pork and Prawn Wantons were underwhelming and forgettable.
Once we finished our starters, a different staff member came to check on us and asked if we were finished or if we were wanting to order food. We told her we were still waiting for our mains and drinks. She returned to inform us that the drinks would take another 10 minutes and would be ready shortly. When we pointed out that we had ordered them over 40 minutes ago, she returned 5 minutes later with our drinks.
Finally, after the long wait, our mains arrived. The Char-Siew Pork Belly was decent, but the flavor was lacking, and it was overpriced for what we got. The Nanyang Chicken Chop was disappointing – the quality of the chicken was so poor, I could have gotten a much better piece at a fast-food chain. By this point, both my wife and I were so put off by the meal that we didn’t even bother with dessert.
We finished our drinks and left, relieved to escape the loud noise.
Overall, the experience was disappointing. The live entertainment was far too loud, especially for a dinner setting, and not enjoyable at all. It was so loud that even the waitress had trouble hearing us and had to shout to communicate. The service felt disorganized, despite the fact that it didn’t seem overly busy, and the food didn’t live up to expectations—bland and overpriced. On the positive side, the venue has a cozy atmosphere with plenty of potential, though the tables were uncomfortably close together—it felt more like we were dining with the next table than having an intimate dinner for two. Given the overall experience, I can’t say I’d recommend it, nor would I return for a...

What an overwhelming disappointment never again. Never go against intuition and be influenced in this way. And I will never frequent any food or drink venture by this proprietor or any associated businesses, of which more are popping up around Perth, a new one in Yagan square this week. Buyer beware, smoke and mirrors are at play all around this place.
The service was TERRIBLE. Staff literally walking past our table constantly, and you had to scream at them because of the music to get attention. There is NO SERVICE, they do not pay attention to the needs of clients - at all. It took over half an hour to get our first opening cocktail, and these were far from perfect. My gin dirty martini was undersized and not made correctly, but I’d waited SO LONG, I wasn’t going to send it back and reverted to walking to the bar to order the next bottle rather than attempting to get staff’s attention.
The food selection under the chef’s “Feed me please” menu was mediocre to very poor. The Wagyu Rump Steak steak we were given as main had so many INEDIBLE pieces it was like a minefield to cut, the butter soy potatoes were not cooked through no flavour and the salad had no dressing extremely dry and also inedible. The oysters and duck tacos were average, thrown together and onto a plate - nothing special, no care taken to bring something incredible to the table, there was no love or passion in the food. Even the small complimentary serve of house pickles were old and soft, no crunch. The little things tell you everything about the big things in a dining venue, there was no attention to detail, all vegetables served were, old, soft & not fresh.
The crab dumplings and Brown Sugar Boba Pannacotta were the two items that saved this dining experience from utter disaster, indeed they were showstopper.
We couldn’t wait to get out of this place.
To be honest, its all about the look, hype and “to be seen”. There is NO authenticity, anyone agreeing otherwise is simply wanting to be seen, in agreement with the relentless self promotion on instagram and tik tok that sells anything.
If you want a great dining experience, save your pennies and do not go here.
Sorry Modu, your manager asked if it was good at the end, but was he really gonna listen or care about the truth? We didn’t feel confident in letting him know, we just wanted to leave.

Read moreI had been eager to visit Modu Bar for a while, and I’m genuinely thrilled that I finally did. My girlfriend’s birthday celebration took us there, and the experience was so captivating that we found it hard to leave even when closing time neared. We savored a delightful four-hour stay at the restaurant.
The standout feature was undoubtedly the exceptional food, complemented perfectly by cocktails that were truly unforgettable. For starters, we treated ourselves to the Peking Duck Breast Tacos - a symphony of flavors with Five Spiced, Daikon, Pear & Hoisin Dressing, all encapsulated in Nori Shells. The combination was extraordinary.
Transitioning to our main course, we were met with culinary excellence. The 400g Charred Lamb Neck, paired with Lemongrass and Nahm Jim Sauce, as well as the 200-day Grain-fed 200g Angus Sirloin featuring a Coffee Marinate and Asian jus alongside Chargrilled Wombok and Orange Vinaigrette, delivered a euphoric sensation as the dishes melted in our mouths.
The dessert, Brown Sugar Boba Pannacotta, presented a delightful twist on Earl Grey Panna Cotta with the addition of Brown Sugar Boba and Chocolate soil. Imagine the sensation of your favorite bubble tea in edible form - it was a delicious reality.
Among the remarkable cocktails we sampled, “When the Smoke Clears” stood out as a personal favorite. The drink selection clearly matched the culinary excellence of the dishes.
Adding to the ambiance, live music by Sam, whose amazing voice serenaded us with absolute bangers, elevated the experience to perfection. Modu Bar has undoubtedly secured a special place in my heart as my new favorite restaurant and bar. This memorable evening has cemented Modu Bar as a top contender for my go-to dining...
