Despite only just opening, the toilets were in need of being cleaned already. Not usually one to complain about toilet facilities, however this struck me as quite odd that the bathroom had every surface sticky. I am not convinced any of the food is either fresh or prepared in house. The George seems to have a strange obsession regarding milk, which was rather odd. I was not allowed a latte, only a Long Black with a small amount of Frothed Milk? The savoury food was mediocre. There was nothing that particularly stands out. There was a very small quantity compared to the price especially. There were menu items missing and was in general terrible. The scones were particularly awful. If I had of eaten sand from a desert it would have had more moisture. The cucumber and cream cheese was for the most part ok, with the exception being the bread being similar dryness to the scones. There was a dessert menu item that was unlisted that we received. It was very rubbery and hard to eat. The taste was lacking and overall and fairly bland dish.
After being stuck outside waiting well past opening time, we were beginning to wonder if our booking was shafted. Staff as I have said were absent once our food and tea/coffee was received.
The atmosphere was more akin to a pub lunch but the venue itself was still rather pleasant. If this were not a high tea but a pub doing pub food for pub prices I would not be surprised. However, I came here expecting a High Tea experience, but was rather disappointed to find what we had.
My recommendation to The George is go and try a few other High Tea places to get an idea of what a High Tea should be like.
All this for rhe ridiculouslt valued price of $50 a head! I will leave it there as I believe enough has been said. There is little to be desired and I wouldn't even allow a friend to go here. Nothing else is...
Read moreSadly, a disappointment. Took my sister out for her 21st birthday for high tea. We both cook and enjoy cooking. Felt like the kitchen staff had clocked out at 12 if not earlier. Cream for scones had been whipped hours before (and was beginning to separate into solids and milk) - the table nearby had fresh fluffy cream brought to them; did they ask for it? Were we simply at the final service before new cream has to be whipped? . Vanilla cake was 'decoratively' iced in neon green (my sister: why????), which had clearly been done so long ago that it had stained the white icing underneath. The mini fruit tarts: the fruits overwhelmed pastry and the "filling" was chocolate (odd combo), but about a quarter tsp of filling. The lemon meringue tarts were mostly meringue (the manager also let slip that the 'filling' was bought, and judging from the colour and taste not the expensive kind either). The deco is very, very higgledy-piggledy [most charitable description would be 'Shang-hai: Paris of the East', but failing]. My worries began with the manager unable to find my booking because I used the short form of my name (e.g. Sue vs. Susan) and were heighten by the waitress who seemed to wander aimlessly with a jug of percolator coffee (my sister: what? Are we in America?). The barman had the look of barely suppressed panic that comes as you watch a disaster unfold in slow motion. Clearly, some of these problems are caused by the world's short staffing crisis, and to all retail staff, I thank you. This is not designed to be a slight or slurr on your patience and dedication. But I might draw your attention to the quote above the door - I don't think it means what you think...
Read moreDisappointing Coffee Experience at The George
I recently visited The George and ordered a flat white coffee, but unfortunately, it turned out to be one of the most disappointing coffees I've had in recent memory. The lack of texture in the milk was quite noticeable, and it seemed as though the milk had been mixed with boiling water instead of being properly steamed. This made me wonder if cost-cutting measures were taken with the quality of the milk used.
The absence of steamed milk resulted in a tasteless and unsatisfying coffee that I simply couldn't bring myself to drink. It's disheartening when a basic beverage like a flat white fails to meet expectations, especially when visiting a coffee shop.
While I understand that individual experiences can vary, I was genuinely let down by the quality of the coffee at The George. As a coffee lover, I value the attention to detail and craftsmanship that goes into making a truly enjoyable cup of coffee, and unfortunately, this was lacking during my visit.
I hope The George takes this feedback constructively and works on improving the quality of their coffee. A well-made flat white should be a delightful experience, and it's my sincere wish that future customers have a better coffee experience at this...
