Sydney’s Ultimate Korean Food Guide: Try Authentic Restaurants 🇰🇷🍲

I was here roughly a week ago in a group of 20, where four of us were vegetarian. We had pre-booked our tables and had asked staff if there were vegetarian options which they had told us they had. Now because there were 4 of us that were vegetarian we obviously opted to sit together so everyone eating meat could share their food more easily. However when we attempted to order our food, we were told that meat had to be ordered despite the rest of our extremely large group ordering practically only meat dishes. OK we try adding one meat dish, where we are instantly rebuffed by the manager who says we must order at least 4 meat dishes to make up a 'minimum quota'. Even though the rest of our group ordered nearly exclusively meat items. After this the manager refused to take our order and even was so rude to question why we bothered coming. I mean it was pretty obvious WE WERE WITH A GROUP OF 20?!?!! When we tried to reason with him saying that the rest of our group had ordered enough meat dishes to meat the 'minimum' even if we didn't order any, he refused to listen and just kept asking why we bothered coming. As a person who does work in hospitality I understand that it may be frustrating to serve a customer when there are potentially more profitable customers that can be served. However this was just appalling customer service. To ask why a customer would bother coming to your restaurant (at this point we were seriously wonder why as well!) is extremely rude and terrible customer service. Furthermore when a friend of mine wrote another review, the management LIED and tried to turn this back on us. They claimed: - We were late 50 mins (NO. We were late 4mins which is within their leeway policy of 10mins) - We only ordered $19 of food. (Our total amount was $109) - We refused to accept their policy ( INCORRECT. As I explained, we did try to argue against this 'minimum'. However we ultimately respected their rules and ordered unwanted additional meat dishes to make up their quota. While our night had already been ruined by this rudeness, we didn't want to ruin our friends' night by leaving (Although we did come very close). I would not recommend this establishment. Now unlike the management of this place I'm not a liar and will admit their food was nice. That said you can get cheaper KBBQ of equal quality with much, MUCH, MUCH better customer service. I am normally an easy going person but this restaurant has left me disgusted by their terrible customer service and lies. Evidence attached.

We love a good BBQ - whether it be in our own backyard with a sausage or a few prawns or at a restaurant, we’ll be there. So, of course we were keen to visit 678 Korean BBQ in the Sydney CBD for a feed. Attending with a group of foodie pals, we were able to try a range of dishes amongst us, beginning with the ban Chan (appetisers). The meat cuts arrived ready for us to cook to our liking. There’s oyster blade, beef rib, beef tongue, brisket to name a few. The wait staff brought out a bucket of hot coals to cook the meat on the grill. We tried a number of beef cuts, and also some pork. Although it dodn’t require the BBQ, the beef tartare was a great dish to start with, served with an egg yolk and a Korean marinade. We also were served a number of the usual Korean favourites kimchi, omelettes, rice and noodles. Other substantials including Bibimbab a Korean classic rice dish served in a heavy stone bowl topped with egg yolk, meat, nori and mixed vegetables. Be sure to get to the end and you will be suprised with the crispy rice at the bottom of the bowl. 678 is great for socialising in a group or an individual booking to enjoy a tasty Korean meal. Another positive, you know the chef will be awesome because it’s you.

Initially started as a great experience, but shortly after, turned into a horrible experience and atrocious customer service from various waiters and waitress.

We came in a group of 9, though we divided our group into 4 and 5, with separate order sheets for different ends of the table. The variety of meats was great, however, this was the only good part of our experience. Having arranged with the waiter that our two groups will order separately, our meats came out accordingly, though shortly after, they began combining our order together onto the same plates without notifying us or gaining our consent. Not knowingly, we cooked the meats, thinking each plate was per table order. It wasn’t until one of our table enquired politely with the waiter in regards to their remaining orders that have not yet been delivered. Without warning or justification, we were rudely accused by the waiter saying that we had already been delivered all our meats and that we were lying. We then requested the order sheet to be provided to us and they responded by providing us a list of the meats that had been delivered. This time, a waitress met with us and again strongly accused us having all our meats delivered and having eaten it. With conviction, she counted the number of ribs/bone that was seen left on our plates, using that for justification that we were delivered all our meats and that we were lying. It wasn’t until we advised them that we didn’t know the plate of meats from our two tables were being combine and reiterated to them that we had specifically asked them not to do that, not to mentioned we put two separate order sheets in for the separate groups. Once they realised their kitchen staff had mistakenly combined our meats without advising us, and acknowledged that there was no way of us knowing each plate serving was for both groups, they then admitted they had made a mistake and briefly apologised.

Our total billing for our two groups was over $650. We were reimbursed with 3 soft drinks for the misunderstanding, unfair accusation, not to mention being highly embarrassed amongst other surrounding customers who were drawn to the attention. The damage was already done.

What had started from a simple polite enquiry that could have easily been resolved had they listened to their customer; instead, turned into an unnecessary heated discussion based on assumptions and...

It is with great disappointment and sadness that I am writing this review. This is a place which in the past is one of my “go to” Korean BBQ places, with high quality meat and friendly staff, which I have promoted for them on my social media many times before, but all that changed in our recent visit post lockdown.

While the meat was still of high quality, the service was not up to scratch. We arrived at 540pm on a Friday night and put our name down for a table and at 620pm we received a text to let us know our table was ready. We arrived at the restaurant just before 630pm for our 90 mins session here.

We were enjoying our drinks and meat and at 7:20pm the floor manager came to our table and told us we only have 10 mins left. At that stage we were still cooking meat and still had drinks and we tried to explain to him that our session was supposed to end at 8pm, but he simply walked off.

By 7:30pm there was a crowd of about 30 plus people hovering around our tables (we sat at one of the tables near the entry). The floor manager came back and told us to leave. We tried to show him the text we receive at 620pm to show we have not reached our 90 mins dining time yet and explained to him that we still have food to cook. He simply told us that the big group needed the tables and that he already told us before we had 10 mins left. He simply ignored our right to have a 90 mins session which was what we were told when we got the table. He then threw a takeaway box on our table and told us to pack the meat and leave the table.

We quickly finished our drinks and left the table to pay, as we were shocked by the way we were treated, and by the amount of people within close proximity to us waiting for our table which was not a very COVID safe way of dealing with large groups of customers.

Utterly...
