Jolene’s brings the country American charm to us in a basement bar to Sydney’s CBD (in what was Mojo Record Bar). Head downstairs from the mainstreet and you’ll see the sparse with plenty of booth seating, velveteen chairs and bar stools. Prints of country stars; Dolly Parton (her song, the namesake of the bar), Taylor Swift and other country favourites like Jack Daniel’s line the wall. This all is great theming for this country style bar. Staff are in fitting with the place with their friendly manner and welcoming attitude. Jolene’s has a huge range of whiskeys, beer and wine, as well as some mighty fine cocktails that will impress the whisky and non-whisky lovers. For example, the ā€œSuperbowl Sundaeā€, is essentially a desert in itself; a coffee cocktail topped with whipped cream. We really liked the ā€œTrash Pandaā€ cocktail too, made with Monkey Shoulder Whiskey, Drambuie, coconut, pineapple & lime, shaken and served in a coupe glass. Garnished with dehydrated orange. Whilst you’re more here for the food, they do have some, which is in fitting with the bar; think hot dogs, mac n cheese balls, tater tots and chilli empanadas. We were some of the first customers that day, so the venue was quiet, but it certainly got busy fast. There’s a stage for live music, which is on every Friday and Sat from 8pm, so we’re keen to be there for that sometime. We really enjoyed this bar and do hope to visit again for their drinks and to enjoy the live music.

There’s nothing quite like flying around the world to end up in a country bar, yet that’s exactly how I ended up in Jolene’s (with a little assist from Kelham from Hickson House Distilling). The room has a cozy feel with a stage by the staircase leading in from the street, and an incredibly well stocked bar in the back corner of the room. The first thing that’s notable about the bar is the undeniably amazing selection of whiskey. It has to be among the most incredible in Australia, and certainly among the better selections I’ve seen in the world. Given the rarity of some of the bottles (like Michter’s Toasted Barrel Bourbon, Wild Turkey 12, several Masters Keep offerings, and so much more) their prices are more than fair for a pour. The staff, in particular the owner are wonderful to discuss the whiskeys with if things are slower. It’s not just a whiskey bar though, my wife throughly enjoyed her Trash Panda, an incredible mix of scotch, honey liqueur, coconut, pineapple, egg white, and lime served in a coupe. The smooth creaminess of the drink luxuriously conveys the tropical flavors for a pseudo tiki like drink that keeps luring the imbiber in for another sip. Overall, I can’t recommend Jolene’s enough if you’re in Sydney and want to experience some amazing whiskey and cocktails.

I'm a regular at Jolene's. It's one of my favourite places, and somewhere you can have a great night out in Sydney's CBD. From the moment you walk down the stairs into this bar, you realise it's more than just a place to grab a drink or hear a band; it's a slice of America right here in Sydney and an unforgettable experience. The live country music acts they get in from Thursday to Saturday nights are great and creates an awesome atmosphere - nothing better than the whole bar singing Country Roads together! The staff are amazing, and Simon and Lucy, the owners, are absolute legends. They go above and beyond to ensure a safe and fantastic night for everyone. I loved seeing the "House Rules" posted around the venue, and I love that they uphold them. I've seen them ask people to leave - but only in situations where it is absolutely deserved, and people's behaviour negatively affects other patrons (like some drunk idiot or entitled Karen being overly rude to their staff.) Food is great - very "American diner" style - especially love the tater tots! Drinks are great. They have an incredible cocktails and whiskey offerings. If you love country music or enjoy whiskey and cocktails, Jolene's is a must-visit in Sydney. If you love both, you might never want to leave!

Went with a group of 15 for a live music night. Staff came up to us in the middle of the night with a small bottle of some spirit informing us that it’s a licensed venue. We had no idea what they were talking about. Some minutes later security politely asked us to leave as a bottle was found near our tables. We asked for CCTV to be checked because luckily there was one above our table and it wasn’t us. Obviously not being sure they let us stay. The way the owner confronted our group initially was confusing and rude. Most of our group was drinking water, which in hindsight, seems like a good reason to get rid of a large group at a very busy hour. Who ever it was should have been kicked out, if you don’t know then don’t accuse a large group. We stopped buying the very overpriced food and drinks at that point. $40 for a sandwich and drink is a bit much even for Sydney.

Edit Firstly, I am not annoyed about the decision but how it was handled. If you want to accuse patrons of something they didn’t do that is your prerogative but it was handled in a bad manner. Secondly, you bending your rules regarding group size and setting is your issue, it’s unrelated, and very defensive. We confirm the size was okay as well prior to coming in. We where sitting around three round tables in a shared space (like the front of a jazz bar), that was also the walk way to the rest of the pub with people there when we arrived around 30 minutes after opening (it was already busy). Halfway through the night you told us we couldn’t have three tables anymore. So you moved one table away to the side, where it wasn’t used. It was to the side empty for the rest of the time we where there. And a table behind us was also free. You first told us the bottle was found under one of our tables. Then security told us it was directly under the chair closest to the walkway. That’s why I said near our table because I don’t know what your story is. I never mentioned another group but yes it could have been. Yes, I mentioned most of the group was not drinking but I meant at the point you came over. Saying (if any) in regards to us purchasing drinks is a lie. One person didn’t drink at all and most had stopped purchases when you came over but most of us purchased two-three drinks plus a meal. I wish it was seen on your CCTV because you’d see it wasn’t us. If it was one of our group that person should be kicked out. I had a bad experience being accused of something I didn’t do at your establishment. You could have said apologies for that but instead decided to be defensive and unempathetic, like you where on the night and are for the other negitive reviews on here. If it was our group and we where asked to leave politely, I’d have no issue. That was...

Jolene's Sydney is not just a bar; it's an experience that keeps me coming back week after week. I've been a regular for two fantastic years, and each visit is as enjoyable as the first. The exceptional service is the heartbeat of this place. Whether the bar is buzzing with energy or in a more relaxed state, the staff consistently treat customers like long-lost mates. Their genuine friendliness creates an atmosphere that feels like a home away from home.

The drinks at Jolene's are nothing short of amazing. The bartenders are wizards and will always help with recommendations, or making you something completely new (or classic, if that's what you're into!)

Live music at Jolene's is a highlight of every visit. The local talent they showcase is extraordinary. The intimate setting creates an experience that you won't find in many other places in the Sydney CBD. The decision not to book huge groups is also a game-changer. It not only allows more people to enjoy the space but also prevents any disruptions from large, loud groups, preserving the welcoming ambiance.

Oh, and let's not forget about Jolene's impressive American whisky collection, a treasure trove for any whisky enthusiast. Their carefully curated selection transports you straight to the heart of Tennessee, adding an authentic touch to the Nashville-inspired atmosphere. Whether you're a seasoned connoisseur or just starting your whisky journey, Jolene's American whisky offerings are a sip of perfection that complements the overall excellence of this beloved Sydney bar.

Jolene's has managed to cultivate a Nashville-inspired country music haven that has turned into a cult following in Sydney. The unique charm of this place, coupled with the exceptional service, outstanding drinks, and phenomenal live music, make it a gem in the heart of the city. If you haven't experienced Jolene's yet, you're missing out on an unforgettable slice of Nashville right...

We were excited to try this place, so went and booked a table on line. In the comments I requested a booth and received an email back stating that they could ā€˜move’ the booking to a booth but booths attract a minimum spend of $250 for 2 hours! I was also required to give my CC details to secure the booking. I politely turned it down and requested a stage area table (with no min spend). On arrival we were surprised to be escorted to our ā€˜booth’. I explained that I had switched my booking to a stage table due to the min. spend but was told ā€œonce we order food and drinks, the $250 minimum can be easily reachedā€. This did not sit well with us as we’d already eaten and weren’t planning on binge drinking in a two hour session. I asked to swap for a stage table but was told he didn’t have any left and that he’d ā€œlet it go this timeā€ - I was dumbfounded. Seriously how had this become my issue?

After finally sitting, the waitress asked for our drink order and when we refused to hand over a CC to start a tab we were told to go and order at the bar.

After grabbing some drinks we found it near impossible to hear anyone speak (including when trying to order at the bar) as the band were ridiculously loud. To say that this place was hard work would be an understatement.

The bar itself was a pretty good set up but having some black and white pics on the wall doesn’t really constitute it being a country themed bar.

Side note - We’re also curious how staff are placing Google reviews here. Simon Hopkins is staff (the email was from him and he is named on their website) so unsure how he can review his own place - twice?!

All up I would not recommend this bar. There are many other themed bars in Sydney that run rings around this...
