Ahhhh Pizza Fritta 180, the restaurant that truly caught my girlfriend and I by surprise. The initial experience, a year or so ago, was unfortunately plagued by a sense of survival from the drastic experience at a local cat cafe - a perfect moment to realise one’s allergy towards them - but one that also remained with me long after. We were surprised in the manner that the pizzas came in, undoubtedly unorthodox to this ignorant fellow, but fascinating and mouth-watering nonetheless. The experience was refreshing.
It was only recently where we found ourselves once again piercing through the upward terrain of Surry Hills, leaving us with a great deal of exhaustion and hunger - the decision to intermittently fast did not help in this instance. Exploring the suburb once again did bring us back to the land of familiarity, with the restaurant back again on our radar. This time, instead of the hustle and bustle of the dinner crowd, we were treated to the calming traffic of lunch.
Opening up their compact, but gorgeous, menu allowed us to be treated to the wonderful photos of Sophia Loren - a sight that tickled my cinephile sensibilities. Gazing beyond the acting legend was the selection of food, all of which were appetising. Deciding to let my girlfriend steer the wheel on what we would be having, the decision ultimately came down to the “Prosciutto & Buffalo Mozzarella” and the “Elena” - the latter a Pizza Fritta that is composed of pork cheek, provolone cheese, ricotta & pepper. With a second time around, there is always this caution that one has towards one’s expectations, whether such could live up to its own. In this regard, I can definitely say that the experience drew us into it even further.
The food, whilst not entirely generous for the price one pays, is refined. The pizza offerings act as more of a bigger brother to the mainstream counterpart and provide one with a combination of flavours that are rarely explored. I noted that Kat and I just kept on going in consuming these dishes, with an eventual conclusion to the entire thing feeling appropriately full but not heavily stuffed; this is stated without a hint of disappointment. Not to mention, this was an experience that took place on the outdoor tables of the restaurant, leaving us with a warm and calming view of the park right across the street. I would also like to note that the waitress that served us was lovely, enthusiastic, considerate, and prompt.
Perhaps I didn’t drench this with enough hyperbole to warrant the generous rating that comes with this write-up but one cannot deny that I only have positivity to provide for this restaurant. I only hope that it wouldn’t be a year anymore before my...
Read moreMy friends and I have been wanting to come here since last year and were excited to finally get the chance to go. However, that excitement was sorted lived unfortunately. When we got there the girl asked how many we had in our party and started walking away before I even had the chance to mention that we had booked a table. We were taken to a table as far away from the restaurant as possible, quite literally in the corner outside with terribly lighting and hardly any heating. We found this a bit annoying considering we took the time to book but we overlooked it as a minor inconvenience. Since we were seated as far away from the front doors as possible, it took quite a while to get any service so once we finally did we tried ordering as quickly as possible and half way through ordering our waitress literally zoned out and stared off in opposite direction. It took me a few times to get her attention again and needless to say we were a bit shocked. The food came out quickly but our mains came out before the entrée. The food itself was so disappointing - completely understand that fried pizza might not be to everyone's taste but was we found it severely lacking in flavour. It was honestly just a very mediocre pizza. The food highlight was the black garlic aioli that came with the calamari. Eventually someone remembered us and asked if we needed anything else but we just wanted the bill. While we were paying, the waitress took our drinks away which weren't finished and it really just summed up an incredibly poor experience. I never want to criticise people that work in hospitality because it's such a hard industry to work in especially during peak times but in all honesty, the service was really poor and after reading through some of the other reviews I can see we aren't the only people to have noticed it - I really hope the owners make note of this and actually investment in more training for their staff. What was more disappointing was that the table next to us got great, friendly service and we just noticed such a stark difference between our service and theirs. I really dislike posting negative reviews but we just had such a bad experience that I couldn't not say something. In our opinion. the food is overrated and service extremely poor. Unfortunately will not...
Read moreUnfortunately I have almost no good things to say about this experience. In summary, it was the worst service with sub standard food. Not a winning combination and I will never go back, in fact, I would encourage you to spend your dollars elsewhere. Anywhere really. It always seems busy when I walk past, and a friend had said it was good so I wanted to give it a try. First, we had a question on the menu (a few items were listed in Italian only), which neither waiter could help with. We then asked about pizza size, and received a blank look. We then ordered a few items, only to receive the pizza literally 4 minutes later despite having also ordered what were clearly called 'appetisers'. Almost comically, we asked where the appetizers were and the waiter looked panicked (he had clearly forgotten), so another jumped in to say 'it all comes together'. This wasn't mentioned, and did not seem to be the case with other tables, so appeared to be a casual lie. They also couldn't remember which pizza was vegetarian, and which was pork... After we had actually finished our pizza, the appetizers appeared! So we had a small, distinctly nondescript burrata and some overly pepper and salted, very boney cod for dessert . Needless to say, we did not order actual dessert when asked. To add insult to injury, we were asked if everything was ok from a third waiter who came over to ask us to pay (the others hadn't thought to ask despite half a plate left of cod). We listed the issues and she just said 'oh.. yes... Please tap here and pay now'. This has never happened in my life - the care factor of the staff was just zero. Sadly, overall the pizza failed to impress, but the service was the worst I've had in Sydney. Whoever managers this restaurant, please retrain your staff in the basics. And patrons, go to one of the many alternative pizza...
