I’ve finally found my hidden gem of 2024! I’ve always loved Sydney for its vibrant multicultural scene and diverse cuisine. However, Maghreb (North African) food has been notably underrepresented—until Café Tanja opened a few months ago in the heart of Surry Hills.
Step inside and embark on an adventure through the rich and aromatic flavours of Maghreb cuisine, a mix of warming cumin, fragrant coriander, spicy harissa, and a touch of cinnamon—you won’t regret it!
Pictured is the lamb couscous I enjoyed, made from a recipe passed down through generations in an Algerian family. The lamb was succulent, perfectly paired with chunky vegetables and fluffy couscous, with the sauce carrying just the right amount of spice and depth. It’s a meal that feels like home, full of comfort and authenticity.
For those looking to try something new for dinner, they are now open on Friday and Saturday evenings with a special menu that highlights the best of North African cuisine. I’ve attached the evening menu here. They also have a spacious upstairs room perfect for hosting groups—ideal for family gatherings or events.

Read moreI recently visited this new Moroccan restaurant in Sydney's inner east, excited to try the lamb tagine. While the service was friendly and my meal arrived promptly, I was disappointed with the dish itself.
Unfortunately, the lamb was dry and lacked the rich, flavorful profile I expected, especially given the restaurant's positive reviews and my familiarity with Moroccan cuisine as an avid home cook. I found the portion size underwhelming for $30—I've had more satisfying meals elsewhere at a lower price point. The Moroccan bread was nice, but overall, the meal fell short in both flavor and value.
For $30, I would expect a dish that not only delivers on taste but also offers a generous serving. To enhance the dish, I recommend ensuring the lamb is moist and adding more vibrant accompaniments in addition ie. loubia, harira, berber tagine etc.
Given the competition in the area, the current offering on the lamb doesn’t provide good value. I hope they can improve in these areas...
