I’ve finally found my hidden gem of 2024! I’ve always loved Sydney for its vibrant multicultural scene and diverse cuisine. However, Maghreb (North African) food has been notably underrepresented—until Café Tanja opened a few months ago in the heart of Surry Hills.

Step inside and embark on an adventure through the rich and aromatic flavours of Maghreb cuisine, a mix of warming cumin, fragrant coriander, spicy harissa, and a touch of cinnamon—you won’t regret it!

Pictured is the lamb couscous I enjoyed, made from a recipe passed down through generations in an Algerian family. The lamb was succulent, perfectly paired with chunky vegetables and fluffy couscous, with the sauce carrying just the right amount of spice and depth. It’s a meal that feels like home, full of comfort and authenticity.

For those looking to try something new for dinner, they are now open on Friday and Saturday evenings with a special menu that highlights the best of North African cuisine. I’ve attached the evening menu here. They also have a spacious upstairs room perfect for hosting groups—ideal for family gatherings or events.

This family-run business has consistently earned 5-star reviews since it opened, and it’s easy to see why. The food is excellent, and the service is always warm and...

If you’re craving authentic Algerian 🇩🇿 cuisine with a warm, welcoming atmosphere, Cafè Tanja 😋 in the heart of Sydney is an absolute must-visit! From the moment you step inside, you’re greeted by the comforting aroma of home-cooked meals and the genuine hospitality of a family who clearly pour their hearts into every dish. 🍲 🫖 🤤

The vibe is relaxed and inviting—like being welcomed into a family home. You can feel the love and care as the family cooks together, ensuring every guest feels valued and comfortable. The service is nothing short of amazing—attentive, friendly, and always delivered with a smile. Every detail, from the presentation to the personal touches, reflects their dedication to creating a memorable experience. 🤍♥️💚

The food? Simply outstanding. Every bite bursts with the rich, authentic flavours of Algeria. Whether it’s the perfectly spiced couscous, tender and flavourful tagines, or the delicate pastries, each dish is crafted with love and tradition. It’s not just a meal—it’s a cultural journey. 🌙🤩👌

If you’re looking for a place where the food is exceptional, the atmosphere is warm, and the people treat you like family, Cafè Tanja is the spot. It’s an absolute...

I recently visited this new Moroccan restaurant in Sydney's inner east, excited to try the lamb tagine. While the service was friendly and my meal arrived promptly, I was disappointed with the dish itself.

Unfortunately, the lamb was dry and lacked the rich, flavorful profile I expected, especially given the restaurant's positive reviews and my familiarity with Moroccan cuisine as an avid home cook. I found the portion size underwhelming for $30—I've had more satisfying meals elsewhere at a lower price point. The Moroccan bread was nice, but overall, the meal fell short in both flavor and value.

For $30, I would expect a dish that not only delivers on taste but also offers a generous serving. To enhance the dish, I recommend ensuring the lamb is moist and adding more vibrant accompaniments in addition ie. loubia, harira, berber tagine etc.

Given the competition in the area, the current offering on the lamb doesn’t provide good value. I hope they can improve in these areas...

As someone from Algeria, Café Tanja instantly felt like home. The aromas, the warmth, the sounds, everything reminded me of my childhood. It’s rare to find a place that captures that feeling so naturally. I had the lamb tagine and it was full of flavour, just like the ones my mother used to make. The mint tea was perfect, sweet and fragrant, just like back home. You can really taste the authenticity in every dish. The staff were genuinely kind and welcoming. I even noticed a small Algerian flag behind the counter, which made me smile. I was wearing my Zidane jersey that day, my childhood idol, and somehow it just all felt right. If you’re North African and missing home, go. And if you’re not, go anyway. You’ll discover something beautiful.
