I recently dined at Rangoon Colonial Indian Restaurant and had a lovely overall experience. From the moment you walk in, you’re greeted with a warm colonial-style ambience — high ceilings, vintage décor, and a touch of old-world charm that instantly makes the setting feel special. The staff were courteous and attentive without being intrusive, offering recommendations with genuine enthusiasm.

The menu is extensive, showcasing a mix of classic Indian favourites alongside some more unique, regional dishes. I particularly enjoyed the entrée of lamb seekh kebabs — juicy, well-spiced, and beautifully presented. The butter chicken was rich and creamy, with a depth of flavour that clearly came from slow cooking, and the garlic naan was soft with just the right amount of char. The highlight for me, however, was the Goan fish curry; fragrant, tangy, and perfectly balanced with coconut undertones.

That said, a couple of dishes leaned a little heavily on cream and butter, which, while indulgent, made them slightly rich for my taste. I would have preferred a touch more spice in some mains, especially given the vibrant potential of Indian cuisine.

Portion sizes were generous, and the food came out at a steady pace — enough time to savour each course without feeling rushed. Prices are on the higher side, but the quality of ingredients and the overall dining experience do justify it for a special night out.

Overall, Rangoon Colonial is a great choice if you’re looking for refined Indian dining in an elegant, nostalgic setting. It’s not quite perfect, but the atmosphere, service, and standout dishes make it worth visiting — especially for those who appreciate a slightly more sophisticated take on Indian cuisine. I’d happily come back, particularly to try more of their...

I have been to this restaurant on a number of occasions over the last 15 years, usually when it has been for a special occasion. Unfortunately things seem to have gone down hill a little since last time we were there. First difficulty came when I tried to make a booking online six days in advance. I immediately received an email thanking me for my interest in the restaurant and that somebody would get back to me as soon as possible to confirm my reservation - unfortunately this never happened. The restaurant still has all of its charm of a time gone by. The food is still, for the most part, delicious however one of the dishes we ordered was a fish curry and the fish was so dry that some pieces were actually hard and inedible. Having said that, the other dishes were all perfect as was the dessert. The cocktails were a bit of a disappointment, I ordered a strawberry daiquiri and it consisted mainly of a few sliced frozen strawberries in a brandy balloon floating in the alcohol with lots of ice, not all blended into the alcohol the way a strawberry Daiquiri should be. The restaurant is quite tired in places and really could do with a refresh. It is a shame to see such a lovely and unique restaurant not living up to its former glory. However having said that, we still had a very pleasant evening, enjoying the ambiance, lovely food and...

I visited this restaurant with a guest last night and ordered starters and mains. We didn't finish the starters and asked for a doggy bad for the rest, so they brought it to us in a container inside a plastic bag and put the plastic bag on the table BEFORE we were served our mains! Incredible! Couldn't they have waited til after we had finished?? We ordered the Mountbatten prawns. What an insult to Lord Mountbatten. The dish was $26. I have had better in a takeaway shop for half the price.

For this price, don't you think they would serve FRESH prawns? They were frozen and tasted like cardboard and were just as rough. I complained to the waiter (while my guest was in the toilet) and he asked why I didn't say so at the time. I said I didn't want embarrassment in front of my guest. They did not attempt to apologise about the fact that for such a price one should expect fresh prawns, but defended the fact that they were not fresh and that I should have told them earlier. No offer of a refund or similar at all. Awful customer relations exercise on their part and I even mentioned that if I didn't get satisfaction I would mention this on social media. They didn't seem to care. I would NEVER recommend this restaurant to anyone if you want quality food. Try Ravi's Cumin around the corner. Heaps better...

We hadn't been to Rangoon for many years, until a delicious dinner there last week catching up with friends. The atmosphere was still so charming and we especially loved the delicious Paneer Tikka! And then last night I ordered takeaway for the first time and it was SO GOOD!! I picked it up myself on the way home from work so it would be hot and fresh. I had the Kadai Paneer and Garlic Naan and everything was SO fresh and SO delicious. I was able to select a "mild" spice version, and it was perfect without being bland. So many incredible flavors and spices - I was in heaven. All the staff were so friendly and relaxed and said Hi as I came and went. We will definitely be making this our #1 local Crows Nest restaurant of choice from now on. (PS - A tip for the person disappointed with their Uber Naan - just reheat Naan briefly in a dry hot frypan and it comes up crispy and flavorsome like having it in the restaurant - Yum!)
