This place was, unfortunately, a disappointing experience for us. It was our first visit and definitely last one ever. We thought of giving this place a try especially with the number of positive ratings that came through and boy, were we surprised by the negative experience and cooked food lack of quality. This is because: Firstly, the portion size of the proteins especially the fish, was almost of meagre amount. Each piece was sliced pretty thinly, and only 2 pieces were provided. I do not think they weighed more than 100g in total. The teriyaki sauce had a lot of black pepper. This resulted in the sauce tasting more akin to a pepper sauce as opposed to teriyaki. Furthermore, there was hardly any teriyaki flavour or sauce for the matter that came through for the teriyaki chicken. Furthermore, the teriyaki chicken also had woodear fungus in the dish, which is definitely not what i expected to be included in a teriyaki dish. The mashed potato was very unpleasant and in fact, I thought was of poorer form compared to even what one could obtain from fast food chains that sell mashed potatoes. The mashed potato included was very powdery and did not taste nice at all or even close to what mashed potato should taste. I am usually a fan of lotus root chips, and this place has put me off them. The lotus root chips did not have any flavour at all, and texture wise, while crunchy felt like it was artificially made crunchy. The sweet miso eggplant is usually another favourite of mine and this place truly ruined it for me. While it looked good, the eggplant came soaking in oil. My first bite into this dish was a shocker to my taste buds. The eggplant was soaked in oil and while usually miso sauce on such a dish is quite strong in flavour, all I could taste was the oil the eggplant was cooked in. While not rancid, it was definitely not clean fresh oil. When I tilted the dish, the substantial excess oil collected at corner. We called the waitress to look into our complaint of the sweet miso eggplant. She tried draining the excess oil and when she brought back the dish, it was still very obvious that there was still a lot of excess oil. When we asked to cancel the dish, the manager instructed the staff to reject our request. As a result, we told the staff that they should then replace the dish as it was inedible by any means. When the manager heard this, only then did she said ok, void the transaction. It was really such a shock that there was almost no pride in delivering quality food for their customers. This really ruined the whole dining experience.

There were only 3 reasons that salvaged the ratings from a 1, and they were: Regardless of the behaviour/ attitude of the manager, the staff were pretty pleasant. Not the most attentive but reasonable service. The decor of the place was tastefully done, welcoming and warm. Although not a large floor space, it provided a cosy and intimate environment than feeling cramped. The raw fish appeared to be kept fresh and restaurant was pretty clean.

Despite the positives, this is a place I will not be returning to given the negative...

SUSHIKI, PYRMONT

I would only have initially known about @sushikipyrmont , a Japanese Restaurant based in Pyrmont once l stumbled upon their Tiktok account while browsing. What immediately caught my eye when checking their menu out was that they had a Tempura Don, so l knew l had to visit one day just to try it out.

☆ TEMPURA DON ($20)

Feast your eyes on the assortment of Vegetables and the huge piece of Prawn that have been perfectly deep-fried in @sushikipyrmont ‘s Tempura Batter. The various Tempura-based items sit on a base of White Rice that has been seasoned with Tentsuyu, a sweet soy-based Tempura Sauce.

The flavour of the sweet soy-based Tempura Sauce just compliments the Tempura items so well and at the same time, imparts flavour into the White Rice so that each spoonful is always a delicious one.

For the Tempura Don here, there was Lotus Root, Sweet Potato, Eggplant, Zucchini, Seaweed, and a huge piece of Prawn so you have a lot of varying textures as you eat. Every Vegetable-based Tempura item was cooked to perfection and the Prawn Tempura remained crispy, sweet and juicy.

I love the broken Tenkasu bits that fall on the Rice resulting in a textural bite every time you have a spoonful of rice with the Tempura items. Overall, this was a well-made Tempura Don and one l would go back for.

On a side note, order the Gyozas here as they come with the crispy-laced bottom made from a starch solution which was surprising to me when l had a plate of the Prawn Gyozas which you can see featured in my highlights.

Authentic Japanese restaurant hidden away in Darling harbour. The service was impeccable: fast, efficient and welcoming. The food was something else. The servings were generous, the sashimi was fresh, tasty and beautifully presented. The soft shell crab sushi was delicious.

They were doing a steady trade in take away and a constant trickle of dine in customers. Getting a table without a reservation was no problem.

The house sake was very drinkable and a great compliment to the meal.

Felt like I was right back in Japan.

I will definitely...
