Recently discovered this lovely small Japanese restaurant on Redfern Street, just around the corner of Chalmers Street and I can only recommend it. Service is good, the staff is very friendly (although sometimes a bit lost in translation), they play nice background music and take their time to explain their food. Japanese beers (bottles) is quite cheap (6.50 AUD, four different brands) and you can also get sake (not yet tried). The appetizers or entrees are very original, don't expect standard Japanese stuff. We tried boiled spinach with diced raw salmon and sesame sauce (rather small portion size, but yummy) and Japanese pickles (interesting). The Sashimi selection is great, superfresh king fish, tuna and salmon, thickly sliced. The mains were delicious as well. We tried Wagyu beef and pork with ginger sauce. I love how the food was thinly sliced, just so the flavours came out so much more. Prices are very fair, as the food was of high quality. The daily specials sounded very interesting, so we will have to come back here more often to...
Read moreDisappointing. Never have I had kakuni pork (Japanese braised pork belly) so lean and hard. Portions may be generous but really not much fat on the so called pork BELLY! Kakuni pork is usually well balanced with fat and meat almost falling apart. It should melt in your mouth! Friend had the wagyu beef and all of us debated if it was actual beef. It did look more like veal since it looked really pale and lacked a “beefy” taste. We ordered a variety - wagyu beef, kitsune pork, sashimi, nigiri sushi, tempura udon set, eel set … starters - karrage, gyoza, soft shell crab and edamame. Good place for happy hour drinks - stick to the Japanese beer. Don’t bother about the sake or mains. Starters are still mediocre. Do not recommend if you had actually tasted actual and proper...
Read moreRecently moved to the area and discovered this lovely Japanese restaurant. Staff are lovely and friendly and service is fast. Had snapper sashimi which wasn't on the menu but they had run out of kingfish. The snapper was fresh, melt in the mouth. Miso with cabbage, onion and tofu the best we have had. Ordered the tempura and asked for a second prawn and whiting fillet which they were very happy to provide. The steak in steak set was beautifully cooked, tender with caramelised onion. Had a lovely little carafe of hot sake (as recommended by Graham Ross when we were in Japan) just wonderful on a cold winter's night. The house white was really good as well. What a great little find. Highly...
