This is a casual eatery reminiscent of old skool Cantonese restaurant, cheap and cheerful. Don't expect service or ambience. Tables are packed to the brim, it is not for the faint hearted and catered for Asians. I read a review from a non-asian lady who complained about being scolded for bringing in a pram.. it would be blocking the entrance lol.
Complimentary clear soup is a starter, if you don't get soup be sure to point this out to a waiter. Soup is supposed to whet the appetite. It also takes skill to prepare a clear broth, so don't miss out. The food can understandably take up to 30 minutes during peak periods. We chose this place for the Cantonese Peking Duck $50 for 12 pieces complete with pancake, shallot, and cucumber. As this is a casual eatery, it arrives to your table as is, in a restaurant setting it is carved infront of you. There is plenty of duck meat and it's ok not dry, price is reasonable for Burwood. Peking Duck is a two course meal, option to have remaining duck meat with noodles, fried rice, or san choi bow (lettuce cups). The noodles were thin egg noodles and it was tasty. Ordered the popular dishes: plate of three types of meat, veges and mushroom, fried rice. The fried rice was a highlight, good portion for sharing amongst five adults with a nice colour and tasty. The veg and mushroom dish was overcooked and a bit on the oily side, as expected. The plate of meat consisted of roast duck, red pork meat, crispy chicken. The pork had a weird chemical taste to it most likely from the marinade. I highly recommend making a booking especially on weekends, it is a luxury this busy place takes bookings as it gets super packed out. The average cost per person for us was $25, excellent value. If you have sensitive stomach to food, oils etc bypass this place. It's a firm four start rating...
Read moreWarning about being overcharged as a non-Chinese customer**
I would like to share my unfortunate experience for this restaurant today as a warning to others. As a Thai customer, I entered the restaurant with a smile and politely asked for a table for one. The elderly male staff member at the front didn’t seem welcoming once he realized I wasn’t Chinese, and he spoke to me in an unfriendly manner. However, there was an older female staff member who was kinder and able to communicate a bit. She immediately told me that the restaurant only accepts cash, which I assured her wasn’t a problem as I had cash with me.
I then pointed to the roasted duck and soy chicken, which was priced at $22 on the menu. I assumed this was for the main dish, so I ordered an extra serving of rice. However, the male staff member (the same one who was rude earlier) spoke to me in Chinese, which I didn’t understand.
When my order was served, it was a bowl with roasted duck and chicken on top of rice (one chicken drumstick and about 4-5 pieces of roasted duck). I assumed they were being considerate, thinking I was dining alone, and didn’t serve it separately as I had wanted. I didn’t mind and finished my meal, but when I went to pay, I was charged $32—$10 more than what the menu indicated. How could rice alone cost an extra $10? It didn’t make sense because this was clearly a rice bowl dish, not a separate order of rice and meat. Rice bowl dishes on the menu are priced under $20, and I expected to be charged accordingly.
It made me feel like I was taken advantage of simply because I don’t speak Chinese and was dining alone as a foreigner. Why did they feel the need to cheat me? I want to warn other non-local customers...
Read moreJust want to have a nice dinner together with friend and my 5 year old daughter, unfortunately, very bad service from an old fat man with rude attitude and loud voice that ruined my whole dinner. Two set of cups and chopsticks for me and my friend, he then got a jar of water, a plastic cup and plastic bowl. But that bowl obviously seems for people to pour out tea, the bowl was white outside but with all the tea stains inside. I just rinse the cups and chopsticks as I normally do, and of course pour it to that bowl, he first said don’t use too much tea, the tea pot was hard to pouring out tea and I just used little bit. He then took away that jar of water that supposed to be for my daughter just because he saw my daughter’s water bottle on the table. I asked him nicely to bring the water back as I want the cold water for myself. Him seems not willing to bring it back but dropped it back with an attitude. As there was no bowl for my daughter, I asked him nicely just to get a bowl for her. He seems very aggressive and said “our dishes all used 100 degrees dish machine wash it. You go to pour out tea in the bowl to use it!!!” He walked away. I was shocked…I can feel the unwelcoming from him. As the food we ordered already coming on table… I didn’t say a word, just shared my little plate to my daughter. The table became messy. So depressed and stressed with his attitude that I can’t continue to finish my food. I regret I didn’t leave the restaurant when he can’t get a bowl for my daughter. The worst experience I had ever had in...
