Pizzeria Bella Milano — Restaurant in Hallstatt

For your own good, DON'T eat here! The WORST restaurant experience in my life. I and two friends went to this restaurant at 8ish PM, as everything else in Hallstatt was closed by that time. The waiter (a tall guy) informed us that they were only serving take-away. We said we would order something. He then gave us a menu and left the dining room.

A minute later he returned, yelling at us in German (which we don't understand). A young fellow who was there managed to translate it and said that he was accusing us of stealing a package of Tabasco (go figure!) from one of the shelves near the balcony and that he had it recorded on CCTV. We couldn't believe in such a ridiculous accusation! We said we didn't even moved from where we stand and that we were visitors in Hallstatt with the least possible interest in stealing a package of Tabasco from a local pizzeria! The language barrier didn't help, but in the end he said it was fine.

We didn't feel like ordering anymore, but since no other restaurants or supermarkets were opened and we were starving, we reluctantly ordered a pizza. We waited outside not wanting to be accused of what else he could have imagined and, while waiting, we heard him complaining with other people, assumingly about us, since there was barely anyone else in there.

Not wanting to have anything else to do with this awful place, we tried to tell him to keep the money and the pizza, which he vigourasly refused. He then gave us the pizza, kept his money and we left.

Overall, this was an insane and chocking moment. The waiter had an extremely rude and mischievous attitude, with no apparent reason than a profound racist hate for foreign tourists.

Overall a thoroughly disappointing experience. From the moment we arrived, it was obvious that organization was not a priority. Despite our group reservation, nothing was prepared — no table, no coordination, and certainly no effort to make us feel welcome. We were shuffled around aimlessly before being seated in a way that felt more like an afterthought than hospitality.

The food? Calling it mediocre would be generous. Dishes arrived lukewarm, uninspired, and bland. At this price point, one would expect fresh ingredients and at least a hint of culinary care — instead, we got something closer to cafeteria fare.

As for the drinks — flat, stale, and just sad. Several in our group received beverages that tasted like they had been sitting out for far too long. When we politely raised the issue, we were met with shrugs and no effort to correct the situation.

Pricing? Unclear and poorly explained. The final bill was confusing, with vague charges and a complete lack of transparency. Attempts to ask for clarification were met with visible annoyance.

The staff? Cold and unapproachable. Throughout the visit, we experienced a general air of indifference, as though guests were a burden rather than a welcome presence.

Wir waren mit einer großen Gruppe im Restaurant und haben im Vorfeld alle Bestellungen gesammelt und telefonisch durchgegeben, damit es vor Ort schneller geht. Die Getränke wurden dann noch vor Ort aufgenommen.

Leider entsprach das Erlebnis in keiner Weise unseren Erwartungen: • Die Pizzen waren geschmacklich enttäuschend – eher auf dem Niveau von Tiefkühlpizza, obwohl sie frisch zubereitet wurden. • Die Softdrinks waren komplett ohne Kohlensäure. • Aufgrund des Platzmangels musste unsere Gruppe geteilt werden – ein Teil saß drinnen, der andere draußen. • Die Abrechnung erfolgte nicht tischweise, sondern zentral: Der Kellner sagte, die gesamte Rechnung werde auf einen Tisch gebucht, und jede Person solle an der Kasse genau das bezahlen, was sie gegessen und getrunken hat. Das haben auch alle getan. • Dabei fiel auf, dass die Preise im Restaurant nicht mit denen auf den Flyern übereinstimmten. Trotz Ärger darüber haben wir alles bezahlt – insgesamt rund 500–600 €. • Nachdem fast alle schon draußen waren, wurde den letzten verbliebenen Gästen gesagt, es sei noch ein Betrag offen – was nicht stimmte. Dies führte zu einem Streit, bei dem sich das Personal (Kellner und offenbar der Koch) leider im Ton vergriffen hat.

Alles in allem ein sehr unangenehmes Erlebnis. Wer auf korrektes Verhalten und echtes italienisches Essen Wert legt, sollte sich gut überlegen, ob er hier einkehrt.

We visited this restaurant with a large group and had collected and called in all the food orders in advance to ensure a smoother process on site. Drinks were ordered on arrival.

Unfortunately, the experience didn’t meet our expectations at all: • The pizzas were disappointing, tasting more like frozen pizza, even though they were freshly prepared. • The soft drinks were completely flat, with no carbonation. • Due to lack of space, our group had to split up – some sat inside, others outside. • The bill was not separated by table, but handled centrally. The waiter told us that the full bill would be assigned to one table, and that everyone should go to the counter and pay exactly what they had eaten and drunk – which we all did. • We then noticed that the prices in the restaurant did not match the ones on the flyers. Despite being annoyed, we paid everything – around €500–600 in total. • After almost everyone had left, the few guests who remained were told that an amount was still unpaid, even though everything had already been settled. This led to an argument, during which the staff (waiter and apparently the cook) became rude.

All in all, it was a very unpleasant experience. If you’re looking for honest service and authentic Italian food, you may want to think twice before dining...
