I wouldn't travel to Hallstatt just to see this museum unless you are an enthusiast (or professional expert) on the Bronze and Iron Age, but if you are already in Hallstatt, I can definitely recommend it. For the "most instragrammable village in the world", Hallstatt is doubly blessed with an interesting prehistory. Artefacts from Hallstatt, which this museum has the largest collection of, give their name to a prehistoric culture which some experts used to (and many enthusiasts continue to) associate with the ancient Celts. Amazing artefact here include grave goods, decorated weapons, large and beautiful bronze vessels, and jewellery, not to mention a good selection of Roman material. But the best collection include finds - picks, leather backpacks for carrying salt, a leather shoe, woven cloth fragments - associated with Hallstatt's salt mine, the oldest known such mine in the world dating well into prehistory. Many of these artefacts before 2002 were in Vienna's Natural History Museum, but has now been returned to its rightful place. The museum definitely belongs to the old guard of museums before visitor engagement was paramount. The museum admissions price at ten euros is steep for a museum of its size.
