I have never experienced such bad customer service at a restaurant that would compel me to write a review on google. I stayed at Hotel Stein and had breakfast twice and dinner once at Steinterrasse.
The first time we had breakfast here was fine. The waiter was friendly and my friend and I had a pleasant time. We both ordered eggs ala carte and were informed that we could get bread from the buffet table. So we did, and got butter, jam and some orange juice without any issue.
The next evening, we made a reservation for dinner for two from my room, and this was when things started going south. The waitress that served us came up to us both with an attitude and did not bother to greet us. She asked rudely what we wanted to order, we were taken aback but my friend asked for some wine recommendations. The waitress then exasperated loudly, rolled her eyes and shrugged her shoulders, shaking her head as if we were being an inconvenience, and asked what kind of wine she wanted, without even going through the wine menu. My friend, then shocked, just said that she would like something heavier, while I ordered a pinot noir. The waitress then just left without acknowledging the orders and came back with both our wine, and did not bother to tell her what wine she got for her.
We then spotted her on the phone multiple times throughout dinner service and taking her sweet time to attend to other diners before another waiter came over to take our order. We were both honestly happy to have avoided her. The food was decent and well-portioned, albeit overpriced, but let's face it we're paying for the views and atmosphere, so we have no complaints there. Unfortunately, at the end when we asked for the bill. The same waitress with an attitude came back, but instead of charging it to my room - she proceeded to charge my card instead, and she didn't even give me an itemized receipt.
The reason this little detail is included is because I get a $100 credit from Amex from booking the hotel through their travel portal that could have been used towards the dining at the restaurant. As mentioned earlier, we were already treated like we were an inconvenience for showing up to dine here and I did not want to be there any longer than I have to, so we just left as I planned to address the credit issue the next day.
I also want to mention that we were both obviously tourists who don't speak German. Every time the waitress came to attend to us, she would speak in German even though we were replying in English, and she would to do the same thing over and over again. It felt as though she was taunting and ostracizing us for being there.
The next morning, I asked the Hotel's receptionist about the credit and found out that because I had paid though my personal credit card and the bill was not charged to my room - it was not going to be credited back. She called the restaurant for me and asked if they could do a refund and charge it to my room instead and she was shot down quickly - stating that it was "impossible". To me, it just sounded like they did not want to do it. She told me to go upstairs and have breakfast instead even though I was checking out that day just so I can get my money's worth.
Unfortunately, it was a mistake as I had another bad encounter with a different waiter that morning. I ordered eggs again and was informed that I could get bread from the buffet table as usual. So I did, and got butter, jam and some orange juice. But later he came by and questioned me sternly, asking why I took the butter, jam and orange juice because I was not allowed to, and was only allowed to take bread. I was again, taken aback as I was told bread was free (and assumed so was the butter, jam and honey that were placed next to it, and the orange juice that was in a dispenser right at the bar for guests). I have never been at a hotel where the restaurant would be stingy and specific about what items someone could and could not take. In the end, he just told me not to do it again - of course I won't - I'm not coming back ever to this...
Read moreI don't like to leave reviews with 1 star, and I was going to email directly but I have seen the responses from owner on other reviews who does respond which is good, but says "next time" a lot which doesn't really cut it. I have no complaints about the prices because we knew what we were booking however the price becomes important because you expect a better service. So, table was booked in weeks ago, arrived on time, waiter took drinks and food order at the same time. 55 minutes later we were still waiting for soup and salad starter. Was about to leave when they arrived. A further 50 minutes and still no main course. I asked the server for the bill, he went to check where the food was and it was not coming or anytime soon. He then spoke to his manager and they charged us only for wine and water. We left. By the time we left no other restaurants were open. I place no blame on our server. But you cannot say it takes 55 minutes to put soup in a bowl and put a salad together. You cannot blame the restaurant being busy because there were plenty of staff around and people were arriving after us, getting their food and leaving while we were still waiting. In addition, in the UK we would not have paid anything for a horrific service and I could not work out why the water at 4 euros was on the final bill. Must have been the bar manager keeping his numbers in check hence why only food was taken off the bill. So I give 1 star for our own experience, all the way from the UK to spend Christmas in Salzburg and ruined. But I do get others will have had a great time, like others who...
Read moreGood location and ambience. We sat inside. Ordered a drink and looked at food. We decided on two salads as we weren’t super hungry, and waiter immediately tried to upsell us on the most expensive menu item — some up selling I understand but it was a 16 euro to 50 euro difference.
However, the real issue came when my partner’s salad arrived with dirt on lettuce and in the bottom of the bowl. She tasted it before she realized and confirmed it was dirt. She quietly asked the waiter to check in with the chef. Our waiter and another waiter (the taller bald gentleman mentioned in other reviews) both confirmed with us it was dirt, but defended the chef by saying it was natural and came from the ground and is normal and “bio.” I’m not horrified, but I do expect to not eat dirt in my meal, even with fresh produce.
My larger issue is that they didn’t seem to think it was a problem and tried to convince us we should enjoy the dirt. Just apologize next time and move on. Quit arguing with customers in your reviews and take responsibility. Jeez Louise you guys.
To their credit they removed the salad from the bill. But what was on the bill was 2 4.50 charges for table bread that was didn’t ask for — and assumed was free (our mistake, but a little annoying). Still insanely overpriced for quality of food. Would pass on...
