disappointing - not meeting our expectations - lacking hospitality - scores as of the location
the big plus is the location as everything is in walkable distance (old town center, Linzer Gasse, Mirabell Garten the bathrooms the "old town view" from the rooms/suites
junior suites are not really suites, they are more like big double rooms, the normal double rooms are very small only the suites and junior suites offer free water/juice, water kettle with tea and coffee and amenities in the bathroom we expected something different given the high price, the reception was not particularly friendly, not unfriendly either, but not very welcoming we were given junior suite on 1st floor facing the busy traffic light on the bridge with view over the catenary, to compensate we were given a suite (big room with double bed and couch/table) on the 6th floor - avoid 6th floor as you will hear music and noise from the rooftop bar until late! - finally moved to 5th floor in a pleasant junior suite with lovely view over the old town as we needed to extend for 1 more night and saw availability on their website we called the reservation directly and they refused providing us same price as on booking.com and on their own website asking for 60 Euros more! We booked on the website and few minutes later got informed that we can stay but would need to change the room (even if same category) (our 3rd move then within the hotel!) as other guests are paying higher price and are only on the 2nd floor...! A discussion with the reservation team was useless - they simply did not care having us as guests or not! So we decided to check out and change the hotel which was right decision as then we experienced the lovely Austrian hospitality in the other place. thanks to Melissa and Andreas from the reception team - you made us feel little more comfortable unfortunately value for money is not right in this place - the hotel would have...
Read moreWe had booked a table for 10:00 a.m. for breakfast on the terrace, which was closed without further notice when we arrived. When inquiring about the outdoor seating, we were informed that the terrace was closed due to bad weather (the sky was sunny). So we were seated in a cramped, low-ceiling dining room with a buffet at the center. The very first welcome statement we heard from staff at 09:55 was that we were too late for a proper breakfast because the kitchen would close at 11:00. From then on everyone was rushed through orders, creating a very unpleasant atmosphere. The waiters signalled throughout the morning that time was of the essence, giving us the feeling of being too late at a charter terminal at the airport. The food was mediocre, fried eggs/bacon with bacon strips so tiny you had to excavate them below the 2 eggs (no bread), porridge with the combination of berries and an insane amount of cinnamon in top. Invariably, at 10:45 we were told that the kitchen was about to close and we were supposed to leave. What impressed us the most beyond the arrogance of the staff was how heavily overpriced all items on the menu were. Buffet cost 30 Euro, so with 4 people you end up at 120 Euro (!) for a few eggs, porridge, coffee, some juices and a few items from the buffet. Hotel Stein which considers itself a „Design Hotel“ basically has the look and feel of a 1960s hotel with a few renovations here and there. My bottom line is, if you are too arrogant and self-centered to be hosting customers, that‘s fair enough, but perhaps then you should not be hosting customers. If you consider it unfeasible to start breakfast at 10:00, you should tell customers at the time of reservation. Salzburg has many outstanding hotels and several top-level cafes creating a warm and welcome breakfast experience, there is not need to waste your money and composure in this rip-off...
Read moreThe location of Hotel Stein is excellent. Corner of the Staatsbrucke Bridge and Linzergasse. Either direction will take you to all the attractions/restaurants/shopping in Salzburg (all easy walking distance). Check in was easy and staff noticeably nice. While checking in a nice young man was waiting to take our bags and had hot hand towels for us! We had a jr. suite with fortress/river view. To me the room is best described as modern rather than luxury. The room was pleasant, clean and large with a big window to enjoy the views. Large bathroom too. Walk in shower was great with a rain shower and excellent water pressure. Large sink and ample countertop space. Room had everything you need; wifi, nespresso machine, coffee and teas, a safe, good size closet, robes, slippers, umbrella in closet, nice toiletries etc. Comfortable bed and pillows. The mini fridge had 2 waters and 2 juices that was replenished and complimentary daily. Air conditioning was a wall mounted room unit that worked just fine. Housekeeping visited our room daily and was excellent. There is a rooftop restaurant and bar called Seven Senses that looked lovely but the day we planned on going it was closed. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. I did wish they had a place downstairs like a snack bar type place but there are supermarkets in the area to get everything you need (and plenty of restaurants!) Every time we walked in and out of the hotel the staff acknowledged us. There was always complimentary bottled water available by reception. Hotel common areas were immaculate. Taxi from hotel to train station was €8.10. I would definitely...
