Located on Linzer Gasse, just steps from many renown hotels, the Gablerbräu is a delightful traditional Austrian restaurant operating since 1429! I was keenly searching for a restaurant that catered more for the locals than tourists. I'm delighted to have arrived at one of Salzburg's most memorable restaurants that serve the needs of everyone! Inside the decor is 'Bavarian Traditional' with heavy hand-carved furniture, vaulted ceilings and amazing rich-in-colour murals which depict Austrian life. I encourage you to take note of the magnificent traditional 'kachelofen' design ceramic heater which provides radiant heat throughout the great dining hall. It's truly a work of art! The staff were warm and friendly, some bi and tri-lingual. Whilst my menu was in German, I believe I noticed that they also have menus in English. I was hungry on arrival and this venue hit the spot! For my starter I had a Fleischstrudelsuppe, which is a beef stew/soup, which was delicious and to my amazement I was able to finish off with my favourite traditional Austrian dish called: Gekochter Tafelspitz mit Erdäpfelrösti, Cremespinat, Wurzelgemüse und Apfelkren. This is a Bavarian boiled piece of Prime beef, served with finely shaved apple/horseradish, rösti potato and a creamed spinach and root vegetables, such as carrots, etc. I should offer a small caveat for my Western friends - the Creamed Spinach is not how many might interpret. It is fully to the point of soup; not to my preference, but still quite tasty. You might just wish to pass on it should you be flying out early the next morning. With my dinner I had a beautiful glass of Austrian Merlot. I really wanted a second glass, but restrained myself. For my dessert I opted for their 'must-have' Salzburger Nockerl. Nockerl is the Austrian version of a French sweet soufflé. Having admittedly 'pigged out' on my starter and main meal I truly suffered to get through this magnificent dessert, something a week later I still regret. I strongly encourage anyone who visits the Gablerbräu to make this a Must on your dinner selection! I'm so pleased that I visited the Gablerbräu and look forward to returning with my daughter in the Summer months! A Must visit!

A good place to eat in Salzburg with decent vegetarian options. The place is clean, the food is good, and the service is fast and reliable. The prices are average for Salzburg. I had some lentil with sweet potato and it was really good. My wife had chicken, but she wasn't really content with it. Maybe it's a local taste, but the meat was rare, and it had some small feathers in some areas. Another small issue we had was that all around us, people from other tables were getting pretzels while we weren't. We aren't that big on pastries and/or dough products, but the pretzels looked tasty and we also wanted a bit of the local taste. All in all it was an OK experience.

I came here even though it has a few one star reviews. It's the average that counts. The staff was welcoming. I received my beer quickly. I ordered the boiled beef. It came out with more garnishes that described in the English menu. There were a ton of sliced carrots and I have OAS, so I have to avoid carrots as much as I can or my tongue will itch all day. The beef was moist, but tasteless. Luckily, the hash browns were done perfectly. Overall, the staff were nice, but the food was a let down. I should have listened to the other reviews. Maybe just go here for beer and not food?

I went there today and had the worst experience. We saw vacant seats and asked one of the waiters if we could sit there. He snubbed us saying 'I don't know, ask that guy'(pointing to someone else). We again started the process of trying to catch someone's attention. Finally one of them graced us by pointing and in a way permitting us to sit if we wanted. We sat, and waited for 20 mins for a menu. One of the guys gave us a couple of menus but since they weren't in English we couldn't understand anything. After 5-10 mins we requested if we could get some menus in English, if they had any. About 15 mins after that, the guy came and literally threw some menus in front of us. All of us were taken aback and wondered what did we just witness. We were all very upset with this very unsolicited and disrespectful behaviour. We got up and decided to leave and not eat here. No one cared, obviously. Since we were treated in such an impolite manner, my husband decided to tell them how we felt. To which the lady there very promptly responded that it's not their problem, they are short of staff, and its not us who should have a problem with their service, it's them who have a problem with the guests. Honestly, it was such a bizarre thing for her to say, we wished her a good day and left. Pathetic place. For the sheer disrespect that they showed, I hope no one goes there and more people give them a piece of their mind for their arrogance. They aren't doing anyone a favour that they should be throwing menus in the faces...
