Here in the Café Bräunerhof you can expect to experience truly the Austrian Coffee House Culture (CHC) as it was in the old days. You can trace the famous Austrian-Dutch writer and playwright Thomas Bernhard who many Austrians still consider to be the most disputed critic of Austrian culture.

You can sit here in the Café Bräunerhof in a Thomas Bernhard’s favorite coffee shop when he was in Vienna. You can feel how it must felt for him to read the news papers and to get upset of what you read and immediately write a critical note, critique or comment.

Above you see the typical reading collection of an Austrian philosopher, cultural critic or Austrian in the classical sense, as it was the legendary Thomas Bernhard for Austria.

Unfortunately the Bräunerhof closes early at 20:30 / 8:30 pm (in the summer times at 19:00 / 7 pm) is keeping up with its traditions more than providing contemporary amenities, therefore plugs or even WiFi is something you search in vain for.

But to be honest these kind of modernity is nothing you search for when you head to the Bräunerhof, since it’s is among the 10+ most famous Viennese coffee houses.

The Quality of the Marillenfleck (apricot cake) and the coffee (Wiener Melange) is very good, the waiter (Herr Ober) is friendly, the prices are reasonable and appropriate for Vienna’s most elegant 1st district.

And the Bräunerhof is one of the few traditional Austrian coffee houses in which you get in touch with the Austrian culture and history the most, in a culinary way of course.

So if you want to have a touch-down in the Austrian culture and want to get a feel for it, go with the Bräunerhof, located in the Stallburggasse 2, in 1010 Vienna, on your next trip to the city center.

With Love! Dr. Dr....

As there was a queue in front another traditional restaurant in the alley, I walked ahead, passed by here, looked inside, saw the nice authentic setting and immediately walked in. The interior was charming, and the waiter was attentive and efficient; he remembered to take my order after doing several tasks on the side of areas that I sat on.

Schnitzel and Suppe were good. Not stunning and a bit over priced, but well made, balanced taste.

On tipping : as mentioned, the waiter was attentive and efficient, however at the end, He directly asked for 1 more euro for tip when he saw I gave a 20 Euro note for a 19 Euro bill. I was taken back, as tipping is not as a mandatory by norm in the country, and the good impression from before was a bit dented, but I read there were similar behaviours at the old cafe next door (Cafe Hawelka),so all aspects considered, I accepted the behaviour of asking for tips as an unspoken norm for these old cafes geared towards tourists as an unfortunate development of tourism in this area that was unpleasant but not...

Café Bräunerhof is definitely one of the most important cafés for the German-speaking post-war literary scene. Author Thomas Bernhard used to come here regularly, one reason being that they do have an EXCELLENT international selection of newspapers, quite possibly the best in town, except in August when attendance is low. Visit Café Bräunerhof during the week outside of lunchtime hours, and you’ll most likely find a seat. On Saturdays, there’s live music with a small orchestra playing classical music, and the place is consequently packed. The food is okay, and the coffee, which used to be subpar, has definitely improved. The staff tends to consist of the classic “grumpy Viennese waiter” type, and in the summer it can get very hot without AC. Still…well, how can I put it… I absolutely LOVE this place!

Where : Café restaurant Braunerhof – Vienna – Austria Title: Good place to try the famous Sachertorte This restaurant is well located around Vienna old town and its not the most touristic one but if you want to try the traditional Sachertorte torte it’s a really good option, since it’s not so expensive like the famous Coffee places around and the torte is delicious. The place has a traditional cozy décor and the service was really good. The coffee was good and we also got to eat brunch there and the omelette was really tasty. Grade: Eli = 4, Serge = 4 Recommend: Yeah, good experience.
