We came from abroad to spend a day in Vienna. We found this place, and it seemed quite nice and the prices weren't too high.
The waiter wasn't really amicable, seemed like he would rather be at any other place than there (which I get, okay, but your bad mood doesn't mean you should mke it awful for everyone).
We ate a few dishes and asked for a few glasses of water. The food was fine: the traditional soup was good, but the other things we tried (like salad) not so much.
When it was time to pay, we realised that the prices on the check were 2-3€ higher than on the menu. When confronted, the waiter said that "it's an old menu, I'm always asking the manager to change it." We were really tired already, so didn't really have the emotional strength to fight, and we paid.
Moreover, for every glass of water we asked for, he charged us 2,50€. When I asked whether it was bottled water, he said that it was tap water, but he "still brought it to us, so we had to pay." I don't know if this is okay to charge customers for tap water in Austria (because we hadn't been to other places), but it was shocking.
Do not recommend this place to anyone, we only had a day in Vienna, and this experience completely ruined our trip. So if you're thinking about going to Cafe Frey, do yourself a favour and skip it.
P.S. Two stars...
Read moreAfter 3 of us ordered the waitress put a basket of bread(3 breads to be exact) on the table. Normally store owner will let you know if they gonna charged you... but no she didnt say anything. So we only ate 2 and she still charged 3 which i understand because its not like she can give the last one to someone else...but they charged 1.5 € for each bread in the basket WHICH WE DIDNT ASK FOR IT...oh also even though they said the soda is 3.1€ (smallest bottle in the world 😂) but they charged you 3.3€... At the end the grumpy waitress will REMIND you the tip is not included. I did tip her since she said...
Read moreExcellent food. Good schinzel. I had the garlic dumplings with delicious asparagus. Quite filling. The turkey was delicious and not dry and had a nice chargrilled flavor. We went twice and the second time we kept it simple with soup. They were both delicious. The cake was okay. Service was good. There was a language barrier but we managed. Menus were in German and we took our time to use Google translate and they gave us enough time to figure it out and order. Atmosphere signals genuine Austrian dining. We went twice!...
