Das Lokal im Hof — Restaurant in Vienna

By far and away one of our best dining experiences for a first time in Vienna. We were coming of a very long amble through the city and I had found Das Lokal im Hof on my phone when we started thinking about dinner (which you need to think about in advance when you have a four year old!). We're not the kind of parents who subject other adult diners to our child (even though she is pretty good in restaurants) in settings which aren't kid-friendly and from the photos, this seemed like one of those places. However it had outdoor seating and it was 5:30 and we had walked a long way, so we decided to chance it. I should start taking more chances - this place was wonderful both in service and in food! We didn't have a reservation (which clearly was needed and indicated how good it is) but the staff kindly offered to seat us if we could leave by 7 pm. Again, with a four year old that's not a big ask :) They went out of their way to make her feel welcome providing some crayons, paper, and a special drink. The food was amazing and their wine selection was excellent! Even though an hour and a half doesn't seem long enough, they never made us feel rushed or that our unexpected arrival was problematic. This is definitely a hidden gem in Vienna and we would absolutely recommend it (earlier side if you have kids, and definitely the later side if it's just the grown ups - they have an unexpected outdoor space that says 'linger here', well past the clearing...

It's a little tricky finding this restaurant. From the street you walk into what looks like a service/delivery truck driveway and it's on the left at the end of the road. The inside of the restaurant has a cozy atmosphere. My party sat upstairs. They have casual rustic wood furniture and the service was pretty good. They forgot my drink order so when i asked about it, they brought it out and didn't charge me for it. I'm not sure they did that on purpose or just forgot to put it in but when i asked they said it was because it was they forgot to serve it.

They have a nice small seasonal menu with a lot of meatless options. The others in my party had the roasted pumpkin, fish spring rolls, steak frites, and the duck breast. I had the potato dumplings in dashi. It was very light with Asian vegetables and more like a warm salad than an entree. The dish was well prepared but so light i had room for dessert. I tried the creme brule. The sugar crust was nice and crisp and the custard mildly sweet and runny even though the custard was cold. Maybe i didn't choose the best dishes on their menu but i left...

If there is one place to gather your best people to have a lovely time around some delicious shared (or not) plates? It is at Das Lokal im Hof. Probably my favorite restaurant in Vienna.

Lamb - soft & tender, Chocolate dessert - texture, layers, flavors, everything was there, and I am a true chocolate lover. Calamansi dessert - perfect fresh a powerful ending
