All about the wonderful, friendly service at this traditional-style cafe in the hipsterish, still gentrifying end of the 4th district. Coffee is just okay, but the ‘Oriental’ breakfast plate was decent, and the serving size generous. If you are expecting to find newspapers from around the world, sorry! There are only German-language dailies available which is unlike other more renowned traditional cafes in this city. But Cafe Goldegg is a great place to linger for a long gossip session with your pals, or for a cosy-up with your fave magazine or book, or while vlogging/blogging/social media trolling as you people watch. The small one-cubicle toilets add interest in and amongst a couple of other features like the old heaters which may or may not be functioning. There is just one (1) toilet for the Damen (women) and one for the Herrera (men). For those who are social media hacks, there is an extremely Insta-friendly room that’s separated from the main cafe and is available for functions for a minimum spend. As for the general ambience, the frayed seating and general decor need some updating and maintenance, as does the big clock that seems to have stopped running some moons ago. For the social media die-hards, recall that this cafe has featured on numerous local tv/screen sets and such like.

The food here is fine, nothing fantastic but decent. The service though... I was waiting for a long time for someone to get my order (the cafe was about 70% empty), and finally a waitress came. After waiting another 20 minutes, another waitress came. After I said I’d already ordered, she insisted on having me order again. Finally the food came, but the omelette wasn’t the one I’d ordered... Then I ordered a ham/cheese toast which, on a busy day, should take 4-5 minutes to make. I waited literally another 20+ minutes until they brought it out. In the end, I was billed for the wrong omelette, having come to the front to pay, as nobody came to me with a check. After the waitress insistently asked whether I’d like to tip, she was surprised and angry at the fact that I didn’t want to. Honestly, with all my respect to the food service industry, this is probably the 1st time in my life that I didn’t feel a tip was in order... What a shame, because the place itself is quite ok.

The breakfast was good and tasty, I ordered the English breakfast with 2 eggs on the side; however, the cleanliness was not ok! The tea glass was dirty so were the kitchen utensils. I asked the waiter to change them, she did it but was not very happy; she told me that this is the best that they have and that she can't change anything for me anymore! The orange juice was not good at all! Not tasty and full of pulp! It was literally orange pulp and not orange juice! The location is not that appealing; though it is near the Belvedere Palace (8 to 9 minutes by walk) it is inside the neighborhood, without any view! I was not very happy; when leaving, the waiter asked for a tip, which was completely surprising! I told her that I do not want to leave a tip, she answered that leaving a tip is an act of respect! Completely strange, disrespectful, and jugemental answer! Leaving a tip in the EU is a matter of choice, and such behavior was rude, inappropriate and not expected!

We visited the cafe during brunch time and tried their business set and schnitzel. The business set was good, but unfortunately, the schnitzel was a letdown. It took a frustrating 45 minutes to arrive, and when it did, the hurried cooking showed - uneven pounding, burnt crumbs, and an overly tough and dry cutlet. I'd recommend skipping the schnitzel here; there are much better options elsewhere. Despite the long wait and not-so-great food, the coffee was enjoyable. However, the experience was marred by the waiter's surprising request for tips at the end, even suggesting the amount they felt entitled to. This was a cultural shock for us, as no other place during our week-long stay did something similar. If you're a tourist, I'd suggest exploring other options or trying your luck - hopefully, you'll receive better treatment than we did.

I had a pleasant lunch here. I ordered a club sandwich and a coffee. It was deliciously good. I was at a table in the corner, next to a window and it gave me a nice perspective over the whole Cafe and the street life as well. Here I understood the whole appeal that Vienesse have for these places, and why you can easily spend half a day here without even noticing. Even though I don’t speak German I could somehow understand the conversation between the waiters and the clients that come there almost every day. If I’ll ever visit Vienna again, I will definetely pay another visit. Almost forgot, here I found a great apple strudel, it’s worth trying.

Mixed feeling : I came here with fond memory of this place Just last time I had amazing breakfast with my girlfriend. This time we had lunch for people and unfortunately the food and Service went south. The Panini took 20 minutes to arrive after we waited was to glass of orange juice oh yeah which cost six euros each 😢The waitress was giving us misleading information When she told us the french fries were included in the Panini, They charge extra fee for a tiny jar of mayo ; A very quick and low-key breakfast cost €50 here. This is definitely one of those old fashion Vienna restaurant, I do like the atmosphere however I would never come back.
