THE BELVEDERE EXPERIENCE DIGITAL Not only the famous highlights from the Belvedere collection, but also unknown treasures can be found and studied online. Around half of the collection is available digitally. Eight world-famous works by the Austrian painter Egon Schiele can be rediscovered using augmented reality. On an additional digital image level, the Belvedere leads behind the secrets of the works of art.

The Belvedere complex is made up of the Upper Palace, Lower Palace, and the stunning gardens in between — and the gardens are completely free to enter! Of course, if you’re into art, the famous Klimt’s “The Kiss” is housed in the Upper Belvedere, but even if you skip the museum, the gardens alone are worth the trip.

This time, I also explored the back side of the Upper Palace and found a beautiful pond and more peaceful garden paths. Honestly, the entire space felt like a painting. I even saw locals jogging through the gardens — imagine having this as your morning run route! (I’d probably jog for a week and then quit, let’s be real😅)

🌸 Next to the Belvedere is the University of Vienna’s Botanical Garden — a hidden gem I didn’t expect. It’s technically a botanical garden, but it felt more like a natural, well-designed park. Bamboo groves, colorful flowers, quiet trails.

Bonus: a kind Viennese lady saw us struggling to exit through a locked side gate and personally walked us around to the proper exit. She told us she lives in the building next to the gardens and strolls there every morning. Unexpected moments of kindness like this make travel so deeply...

Rude security and dog haters. There were no signs that dogs are not allowed in the garden! When I did enter with kids and a dog (trained and social dog on a short leash and even with muzzle and walking next to us, showing no aggression or even any interest to other people), security moved directly towards us and pointed to the dog. On my questions why, he showed me a sign on the opposite side from us which was pointing towards a small green area. He completely ignored my question why there is no sign on entrance and that the sign restricts only a small green area. It was also obvious that he understood english, but instead he started speaking loudly and used his hands and did look aggressive. As a result, me and my children remained outside the gates waiting for my wife, who was on an excursion at the time.
