When I first checked Kendang posts on Instagram, I wasn’t entirely convinced. But then I went, and everything changed!
The food here speaks for itself. Every bite full of heart, technique, and right flavor. It’s the kind of food that makes you feel something deeply satisfying. You can tell right away: this isn’t just cooked by someone who knows the recipes, but by a chef who understands them. A proper experienced chef.
When i checked again, i found out they change the menu regularly. That alone says so much.
Indonesian food is incredibly broad—regional & complex—and to keep refine it like this means they’re constantly testing, researching, and evolving. I could really taste the effort in every dish.
As an Indonesian who’s lived in Europe for over eight years, it made me proud. Kendang isn’t just serving Indonesian food—they’re pushing it forward in the best way!!
So if you’re in Vienna and craving something beyond the usual Asian fare—this is it!
And remember, they make delicious...
Read morePremium prices for even simple dishes like Nasi Goreng or Mie Kopyok (over 15 euros), and main courses are priced above 25 euros. As an Indonesian, I personally found the taste of the food quite mild and not very close to the flavors I’m used to. I assume the restaurant is primarily targeting the local Austrian market, which might explain the toned-down spices.
That’s a bit of a pity from my perspective — I’ve been living in Austria for over 10 years and was really looking forward to finally having an authentic Indonesian restaurant here. I’ve seen many Thai restaurants, like All Reis Thai, successfully keep the authenticity of their flavors while still appealing to the local market.
On a positive note, the atmosphere was quite nice, and our waiter was very friendly and helpful. Given the overall strong ratings, I understand that my view may be a personal one — as a spice-loving Indonesian. 😊
Wishing Resto Kendang all the best and continued...

After Borobudur not taking off and Rumah Satay being closed for good, it was hard to find Indo Food. That said, we are Australian/Austrian used to lush Balinese and Sydney restaurants.
Kendang Restaurant is a tiny bit under decorated given the rich artsy culture that Indonesia is. The staff was blissfully friendly.
The menue had only 2-3 dishes with meat or shrimp in it, so we decided for the Rendang and Jimbaran Shrimp which tasted amazing. Rendang was a little dry though, weve seen more red coloured sauces with it, but that may be a regional difference. Anyway it could use more sauce.
Prices are abit in the steep side, we spent 72 euros for 2 people.
Im sure we will be back for more espacially with changing menues.
Maybe it would be possible to have a Nasi Goreng version with little shrimps in it, like we had in Bali....
