I like to cruise, and an easy leg to take is from Florida to the Bahamas. I came across Athena cafe by accident while wandering around while docked in Nassau. Upstairs I found the most delicious Greek food in a place that I wasn’t really expecting to find Greek food. The people running the place were really welcoming.
Since 2011 when I first found it... and this may seem a bit ridiculous... I have booked the same cruise itinerary 5 additional times just because a) RC Enchantment of the Seas and Freedom of the seas are great ships, but b) I would get to visit this place again. I make it a mission to get there every time (one year twice) and just enjoy a cold beer on the balcony with some stuff grape leaves. I have a collection of pens that they give out with the year on it from every year (except 2014).
I booked a cruise this March (2018) for our second wedding anniversary, and to my absolute heartbreak I discovered they are closed on sundays, the day I’m in port. I kid you not I got a bit upset and if it wouldn’t have been financially irresponsible, I would have rebooked a cruise to be there when they were open.
If you’re there, give them a shot. I’ve had so many just wonderful meals there, relaxed, and just happy. I urge you to enjoy it...
Read moreReally cute place above a jewelry store. We walked by and decided to stop and we lucked out!!
You go up the stairs (trust the process, it doesn't look like there's a restaurant there but there is). Our server was such a happy friendly likable person that I found myself thinking, could you serve me some of that great attitude with my meal??
I was so happy to have some fresh vegetables! Crisp and refreshing. They were great and so was the silky smooth hummus with a light consistency. The sandwich was very good and filling. I got a Greek salad with delicious shrimp. It was like a side salad. We shared. I would order just the shrimp but the salad was delicious too with just the right amount of dressing.
We had water bottles with us. I didn't order drinks because $75 is already steep for lunch. That's my complaint is that things are priced really high (probably because of cruise ship traffic since it's so near port).
The fries were still hot and delicious, thick cut with a nice seasoning.
We saw the table next to us order a melted cheese dish with pita bread that they light on fire first and it made me want to try it!
I'm glad we went and I'd recommend it. We didn't want to eat in a bar and were really hungry...
Read moreMy wife and I were vacationing last week in the Bahamas and this place became our go to restaurant while we were there.
This place had the best food we ate while there from their incredible crossant breakfast sandwich, to the lamb gyros and stuffed grape leaves. Can't say enough about the food. Not only was the food the best we had but so was the service. Perhaps not by Northeast US standards but by Bahamas standards it was head and shoulders about any other place we ate and we ate out our entire trip. Plus, if you sit outside you can people watch which was a treat in and of itself if you like to do that like my wife and I do.
Yes, it's expensive but when everywhere you go they add 15% gratuity plus a 10% tax on top of that, everywhere you go is expensive. We thought of all the places, Athena Cafe did the best of not making us feel like we were being ripped off as we did in many other places. This may be more indictment of the way the Bahamas runs their tourism than any specific establishment as they're all adding the 25%.
HIghly...
