Banana Leaf in Antwerp was such a great find! The meat roll was awesome—so creative and tasty (not in photos). Spices were just right, not too hot, not too bland. The portions? Huge! Probably even bigger than what you'd get in India. The curries were all different, not the same sauce in every dish like some places. Garnishing was spot on. The biryani? Pure South Indian style—flavorful and really well done. Only small thing, the meat/chicken in the sauce could be a bit more. We almost didn’t go to them because of some silly negative reviews, but so glad we did! This is one of the best Indian food places I’ve tried in Europe. Even for a Tamil-owned place, they nailed the North Indian dishes too. The hostess? She's not your usual quiet type. She's funny, bold, and super friendly. She even remembered a customer who hadn’t been there in months! Loved the food, portions and presentation. Definitely going back next time I am in Antwerpen.

Delicious, authentic Indian food (we ordered only south Indian food), lots of seating - especially loved the inner courtyard/terrace surrounded by plants, trees and shaded by umbrellas in case of rain, and excellent service. The owner was warm, thoughtful and catered to our requests like making our filter coffee stronger or getting masala for dosas on the side without any complaints or added costs. The masala dosas had caramelised onions inside, which was a great touch! The chillies on the chilly uthappam were legitimately spicy, which we as Indians loved, but others might want to keep in mind. Sambhar and chutneys were great. Chilly paneer had few paneer pieces but more salad which was a bit disappointing. We got individual dosas / uthappams, beers, and shared a bunch of starters which turned out to be both filling and economical. Would totally recommend when in Antwerp :)

I've been looking forward to trying this place for a while! It's almost great. The food is really good, extremely tasty and deserves more than 5 stars! The portions are really good. The pricing is different on the menu than on the website. The staff is very polite and helpful but they don't really attend your table too often. Sometimes you have to go and fetch them to ask for an extra drinks or to pay. Also, they got one thing wrong but it wasn't a big deal. There is a nice courtyard in the back with tables, the atmosphere could be nice but it's dead silent. Not sure why they can't play any music there, even soft. Finally, there is a sort of pond in the back, which has no fish, it's dirty and there is a dead mouse floating right next to your table. The interior looks very nice though! Overall, I will go back for sure.

Disappointing Experience at Banana Leaf

Upon entering , the ambiance promised an authentic Indian culinary adventure. However, the taste journey that followed was a detour far from satisfaction.

Starting with the Lassi, usually a refreshing delight, it was an unexpected assault on the taste buds with an overpowering salty punch. It seemed more like a misguided experiment rather than the traditional creamy sweetness one expects.

The Naan, a staple that should embody softness and subtle flavors, arrived disappointingly dry. Its texture resembled more of an over baked flatbread than the pillowy delight that makes Naan a favorite.

The Biryani, a dish celebrated for its fragrant spices and harmonious blend of flavors, fell short of expectations. It lacked the complexity and depth that defines a good Biryani. The rice was dry, and the spices seemed to compete rather than complement each other.

The most disheartening part of the experience was the reluctance of the restaurant owner to address the concerns raised. Despite attempting to provide feedback, the owner seemed disinterested, indifferent, and unwilling to acknowledge the shortcomings in their dishes.

Furthermore, it was concerning to learn that the cook preparing these supposedly Indian dishes wasn't from India. This fact might explain the lack of authenticity and understanding of the intricate flavors and techniques crucial in Indian cuisine.

In conclusion, while the ambiance may hint at an authentic Indian dining experience, the food falls drastically short. The Lassi's saltiness, the Naan's texture, and the uninspiring Biryani paint a disappointing picture. Coupled with the owner's unwillingness to engage with constructive feedback, it's challenging to recommend this restaurant to those seeking genuine Indian flavors and...

This place seems to have limited south indian dishes than i thought. Its mostly 6-7 South Indian dishes and mostly North Indian kinda curries.

We started with idlis which were super fluffy but also stuck to the banana leaf. Then we had a medu Vada which was different than what we get in other places. I didn’t mind that but i would have liked it to come with sambar!

We also ordered seekh kebab which usually comes with a green chutney but it didn’t in this case. Was pretty alright.

Most disappointing was the uttapam. The chef had some very different idea of what an uttapam is. The ends of the uttapam were crispy like a dosa and he gave caramelized onions on the top when we asked for an onion and chili uttapam.

They also came and told us that we had only 30 minutes to order till 14:30 but they didn’t hesitate in taking the order after 14:30 from the table next to us. They were non Indians FYI

Whenever we asked the waiter for any info about the dishes, he would just say ‘ i don’t know, i don’t make the food, the chef would know’. Like what kind of a reply is that? You can always say.. i don’t know, i will ask and get back to you!

The place was disappointing in a way that i wouldn’t go out of the way to eat here, but if i happened to be in the neighborhood and had no other option, then i...

I’m a Local Guide, so please read my review in full and don’t forget to like 🤗❤️🎉

😔!!! DISSAPPONTING EXPERIENCE !!!☹️

WHAT WE WANTED - We went to eat dosa (twice) with family , however, server advised both times that it wasn’t available until the next day as batter had to be made overnight (STRANGE)!🥵. Next time they advised we don’t serve it on weekends and we suggested them to mention it on their menus/ website.

WHAT WE GOT - Other Vegetarian starters were ok, paneer and chana masala had flavour, however, chanas were not boiled properly.😭

Ordered 3 lassis, all of them tasted a bit salty.😢

SERVER - The server seemed to be overloaded with work and didn’t help. This creates not so warm and good experience for its customer.😕

SEATING - We got 4 seats in the corner with limited space even to move. Requested server to change our table. She advised she was packed and didn’t have time to clean other table as she had customers waiting outside. NOT A GOOD CUSTOMER SERVICE !😫

PRICING - Items were decently priced and have an edge over other restaurants.☺️

MIXED REVIEW SO I WILL NOT...
