I am not vegetarian, but I could happily eat at Pois Chiche every day for the rest of my life. A review in three words: flavorful, refreshing, delicious. Practical info: - The location is a ~10min walk from the Grand Place and offers a more authentic, local vibe. - Menus are available in English, Dutch, and French. - No cash - Indoor and Outdoor seating available Personal Thoughts: The attention to detail here is *amazing*: the flavors, the presentation, the portions. Pois Chiche is a shining example of flawless execution; beauty in simplicity. I came here hoping for some good falafel (and yes - the falafel is good) but the dish I can't stop thinking about is the grilled eggplant! I wouldn't have even said I enjoyed eggplant before I ate here. I was full before I could try dessert, but if it's anything like the rest of what they offer.. it's sure to be divine. For my fellow eco-conscious individuals and enthusiasts for eating local, all the chickpeas here are locally and ethically sourced. So you can sleep as well as you eat.

Many places lay claim to the mantle of great Middle Eastern food in Brussels, but Pois Chiche could rightfully win it many times over. Behind its small and unassuming exterior across the road from a church square is a restaurant where maybe 20 people could sit. All of them glowing with satisfaction. This is all vegetarian food, super tasty and carefully made. The portions are fair if not overly generous. It’s a ‘come as you are’ kind of place: order from the counter - no cash - pay at once and you will eventually be beckoned by the plastic buzzer. Unlimited hot water for tea or lemonade are both on tap. You will need to serve yourself and clear your own table; but self service is often safe service. The staff are very welcoming and thoughtful. The menu is simple and the simplest option is to have one of everything. The food is the reason to come here and you will not be disappointed. Falafel, mutabal, dolmades, cauliflower shawarma, olives, halloumi, pitta etc. It’s all there and it’s all delicious.

First time in Brussels and I happened upon this place without knowing much about it. Usually I just default to a falafel plate at middle eastern restaurants, but the choices were so intriguing that I opted for the chef’s plate (combo platter) and it was a taste sensation! Everything worked so well together that I didn’t want the meal to end. I would have liked a little more flatbread with it, just to add more filling carbs and because it was so good. Olives were a deliciously-marinated appetizer that I enjoyed throwing in with everything else. Also, the staff is very nice and I really like the environmental ethic of the place. No throw-away containers and it looks like they might compost food scraps (not sure about that). Anyway, highly recommended!

Food is not bad, but nothing exceptional either. Service is more disturbing. Non only do you have to queue to order (you then get one of those gizmos that buzz when your dish is ready), it takes ages before it's your turn, which kind of defeats the purpose. Add to that the fact that the staff seems customary of errors (we witnessed several while queuing and we also experienced it with our own dishes), and it starts to ruin the whole customer experience. Add the fact that our word was put in doubt when we said they made a mistake and we had to prove we were right by showing the ticket, and you could actually say it borders on the downright outrageous. If you want to eat decent vegetarian and vegan food, the place is not bad. But if you expect good service and some some to sit down, relax and chat during your lunch hour, pick somewhere else.

  • edit: to reply to the reply of the owner (too bad there is no way to really converse) * Thank you for your reply. I am well aware of the buzzer system. Other restaurants seem to get it to work quite well. With a simplified menu as yours is, ordering should be quick, which would allow people to get to their table and wait peacefully while you attend to other customers. So it's the speed of taking orders that seems to be the bother. As well as the accuracy: while your waitress tries to correct the mistakes, she cannot attend to other customers and the problem gets compounded.

Now, for the serious part: I was actually asked by one of your staff to show proof that I had ordered two falafel plates. I found it outrageous on the spot, and I think the person who asked it to me saw my obvious displeasure. To see you put that in doubt here makes me particularly angry. I can forgive problems that arise from your place still trying to find its marks, as it is perfectly normal. I cannot accept for one second being called a liar. I demand an apology.

Went back to Pois Chiche this morning for a Sunday brunch.

I stand by my review of last time: food is decent (some might even say delicious), but service is dismal . It was 11 in the morning, and apparently the whole staff had a bad case of hangover. They wore for or five, and unable to attend speedily to as many tables. We also saw many people take a seat, wait 15minutes for someone to come and leave since no one came. The explanation: the staff was having tea and chatting behind the counter. I know it’s service inside, but is is not indicated clearly and anyway it’s like a nice idea to come with a rag and clean the table when someone new comes in. Anyway, we had good food, so it was nice, but I would not recommend this place.

Also: avoid coffee at all costs. Rarely had such a terrible brew. One has to admire the reverse mastery: missing a coffee so completely is kind of...

Came here on a Saturday morning and we were only given a brunch menu, apparently you can't have anything other than a mixed platter or an oven dish on a weekend morning. Too bad as we would have wanted to try several items on their menu. We were welcomed by a not-so-welcoming staff member and ordered two mixed platters, which look vegan on their menu (among the items that make up the platter there aren't any which are not vegan). However, when we asked just to make sure they told us there was an egg, which is not written on the menu... Luckily we asked, but wouldn't it be better to just write it on the menu?? After we ordered and were charged €1.50 for tap water, we waited over 35' for our food to be ready. Where do I even start? ALL the food was cold, except for roasted cowliflower (making up 1/10 of the platter). Some veggies were pre-cooked but served cold!!! Why wouldn't you at least warm them up a bit? Throughout our meal we saw staff members picking up food from the fridge and just putting it on the plates... But the worst part is, if you are called Chickpeas, then I would expect your hummus and falafel to be fenomenal, but they were bland and taste-less!!!!! We left feeling disappointed and hungry. There is nothing middle eastern about this place. €15 for a fridge-cold plate of below-average tasting food is not worth it... Honestly, you'd be better off cooking some store-bought...
