We heard there was a new restaurant in Canmore called Rhythm & Howl and it was worth trying.
Rhythm & Howl is in the MTN House Hotel and represents itself as an emerging culinary gem embodying a farm-to-table ethos, exclusively showcasing the finest locally sourced, sustainable ingredients to entice gastronomes – their words.
Sounds good so we decided to take our out-of-town guests to give it a whirl.
We made a 6:45 dinner reservation for table of 5 last night. We were cheerfully received at our reservation time and promptly brought to our table. Our waiter Trevor was attentive and of good cheer. He answered our questions concerning the menu, took our orders and brought our drinks quickly.
We ordered various wines, mocktails and non-alcoholic beer (only choice was CRFT Blonde Ale).
Here’s what we had for dinner and our thoughts:
Garlic and Chili Prawns The dish was four whole prawns with “heads on”, This was our appetizer … no problem as we wanted a taste. We squeezed the grilled lemon on the prawns and cut them to share amongst our group. This dish would best for one person. Taste 3/5 … I’ve been spoiled by chili prawns from Asian restaurants.
Hanger Steak The hanger steak was ordered as a main course. The selling point was the harissa hollandaise sauce. Unfortunately, the bite size pieces were sinewy and chewy. Hanger steak has connective tissue that once removed makes a great cut of meat. Too bad here. Taste 4/5
Salt Baked Beet Salad The salt baked beet salad was ordered as a main course. General comment was that it was good but skimpy for a beet salad. Taste 4/5
Toasted Farrow The toasted farrow was ordered as a main course. The selling point was the grain. Nailed it for my dining partner on taste, portion, and healthiness. Taste 4/5
Bison Burger Two of these were ordered as main courses. Selling point was the bison meat. Burgers were served as described on the menu. The salt & pepper fries were missing pepper. Taste 4/5 for the burgers.
We were served about 90 minutes after we were seated.
Important to remember that this is a new restaurant and that it was a full house.
We recommend giving them a try.
Hopefully by then, the restaurant team will find their stride and make the restaurant...
Read moreI rarely write reviews but this experience truly blew my mind. I'd give zero stars if I could as this meal was by far, the worst dining experience I think I've ever had. We arrived early for our reservation, prepared to have a drink at the bar while we waited for our table but were told to seat ourselves anywhere we liked only to be ignored for over 10 minutes with no menus or water brought to the table. The dining room was maybe a quarter full but staff seemed more concerned with cleaning dirty tables around us than getting us started. The bartender (who had no guests sitting at the bar) finally brought menus over and told us our server was busy yet never offered to get us drinks and went back to standing behind the bar polishing glasses! Our server finally came over and took our drink order and let us know the specials but had very little knowledge of anything else on the menu when we had questions. Drinks sat on the bar for another 10 minutes while the bartender could not be bothered to bring them over. Finally got our drinks immediately followed by two of the three entrees we'd ordered which took another 15 mins by which time half the table had finished their meals leaving one of us to eat alone. Our server did apologize for the delay but also pointed out that we had taken too long to decide! The meals were nothing special. Chicken was bland and dry and pasta resembled a frozen TV dinner but since our server never bothered to quality check, and we we hungry, we ate what we could. No offer of a 2nd round of drinks despite our empty glasses, nor dessert or coffee just "how do you want the bill split?" while our dirty plates were still on the table. This is really unfortunate as the space is beautiful and this spot has potential unless you're ok with catering to tourists who will never...
Read moreVery casual place located in Canmore inside the hotel. We chose this place delighted by the menu, however, it was not fully as expected.
We started with the smoked salmon dip, and ir was surprisingly good, cream cheese mixed with salmon giving a dense texture to your palate. The chips for the dipping were nicely fried, crunchy and not oily at all.
We continued with the prawns, a very simple plate including oven grilled jumbo shrimp (4 units) accompanied by two toasted bread slices and a cilantro and chili sauce. Quality of the prawns were not excessively good, having some parts uncooked due to not keeping then enough time grilling. Still, this is a good plate to share in a meal.
After the shrimp, we ordered the bison burger, wanting to try this type of meat so typical in the area. I found myself I bit disappointed when I tried the patty because it seemed to be a frozen precooked patty you can buy in the supermarket. The bun was soft, lightly toasted and tasty when biting this burger. Fries on the side, well seasoned, not salty, but again, they were frozen and not hand cut.
Which really surprised me from this place was the dessert. And it is definitely my recommendation from this restaurant. The tarte tatin was incredibly good, cooked at the moment, warm when served, a good portion, accompanied with caramel and vanilla ice cream. Definitely a must try if you stop by Rythm & Howl.
The service and staff was attentive, standard, and we were treated very well.
Price for this restaurant I would say is a bit high for the quality offered in each plate Quantity is good and portion/sizes served are ideal for casual meal. I would recommend ordering 1 appetizers, 2 mains and a dessert for a...
