..ill still leave my 5 stars because i loved the first one.. and the staff..coffee is tasty too ❤️ But the update is....they changed the buns on the egg sandwich. 😔
Now hopefully it will get sorted. As the new supplier is a sesame bun. Which is fine. But twice the bottom bun was hard in one spot. And cumbling stale all over dry. Top is meh...but did the job.
Never realized how much it affects such a delicious sandwich. But it does... they remade it, very kind. But the second one sadly the same.
So not a huge deal. Just awareness. Cook needs to be visually and maybe physically touching the buns before they go out. It just made it so dry. And checking shipments when delivered. Making sure it's to Chix standard. Or I hope the local bakery makes a brioche I'd vote for that. Before it felt like $9 was worth it.
I'm sad I didn't take a Pic of the first one to compare visually for everyone. It was so divine I ate it too fast. Wasn't thinking review or photos. Lol
Either way still recommend! Absultelyc Other fab options. I'm just sad because I loved that first egg sandwich and bun so so much. I had been craving it.
Original review: Has been a while since I kept considering to stop in and try! Tiny Update.... I read somewhere they use Devils Head coffee, a local yyc roasters for those who don't know...but found out later this location uses Umbria a Canadian Commercial Roaster but not the extra local Devils Head Calgary - I will have to confirm if that's now changed permanently ? darn ... umbria is pretty tasty but I definitrly was more excited and proud if it was devils head.
Besides coffee I had the egg sandwich it was super tasty, good portion of egg, soft bun, the curd melted/fried up brown and melted was amazing.
The dill dip I got on the side but is addicting and would go super well with the potato wedges. Love it! I just was too full so maybe those next time.
Service was lovely. Ira, is wonderful!
The process is to order and pay upfront etc and they bring to you which is fine with me, Ira was hustling! Running the show by herself and don't we know /those who have served- what it's like caring for so many ppl, and she was just fabulous, efficient, calm, fast. And so friendly; a rarity. She genuinely cares about your experience. Use to be like me when I served and often goes unnoticed, so when I see that level of service, plus care with a smile I make sure I give a special shout out to praise it! Because I tell you so many places big small restaurants or coffee shops some ppl just don't care anymore.
I think my only suggestion would be to consider bringing the wedges price down a tiny bit in price. So if the margin is there I'd say try that and see if it pays off with more sales ...theyd be sooooo delicious with the dill dip. But If not all good. And of course Bring back Devils head if it was here? And could be possible lol 😆
I'll be back of coufse and...
Read moreI came here with some expectations based on the interesting menu and reviews. The menu is very good. It not a large menu with balance. The names of the dishes are catchy. The venue is nice and welcoming. The staff are polite and friendly as expected in Canada. I ordered a cappuccino with waffle and fried chicken. The coffee came instantly so I believe it must have been from a machine. The quality of the coffee was average. The cup size was large as you can see from image, so they were generous with the quantity. To my taste the cappuccino tasted more like a latte it was very milky. Right after having this coffee I walked across the street to Phils and Sebastian and had cappuccino there and I experience a big difference in the quality of the coffee. Waffles and fried chicken I have tried a lot in the states in places like north Carolina, NYC, bay area and Texas. So my judgement could be slightly bias as I experienced some really large size chicken servings cooked in southern style with some tasty seasoning red or orange color crispy battery skin buttery with syrup drizzle on top with the thick waffles spongy inside and crispy outside. Everything was freshly made. The fried chicken here was breast with a very mild seasoning. The breast was dry inside and you taste more of the marination and coating than the chicken meat itself. That was in contrast to the chickens I had in the states. The chicken in the states where southern fried chicken that were definitely nicely brined and marinated giving nice juicy chicken meat. The chicken were whole pieces of thighs or beast with bone and skin. You get the nice crispy chicken skin. All these elements of a good fried chicken was missing. The chicken here almost tasted as though it was from a ready made package. Waffles also average at best. The waffles also tasted like the ones that were ready made package. This is a restaurant at back if alt hotel downtown, I expected more high quality preparation. I am surprised by the rating of 4.1 currently for this place. I may have missed on the other good dishes perhaps. I am in dilemma to go back or not again. Chicken and waffles is a classic breakfast dish. It is not that difficult to get right. But the chicken and waffle was average at best. I would give it a 2.5 rating for this specific dish and coffee. With a little bit more effort this dish can be better prepared. My overall rating is 3/5 including food , venue and experience. I recommend the cook study some chicken and waffle recipes on YouTube to get ideas how to improve this...
Read moreThere’s a new diner in town! The dynamic, entrepreneurial team of Connie DeSousa, Carrie and John Jackson have recently opened CHIX Eggshop in the East Village. Located in the Alt Hotel, the diner complements the design elements of this trendy boutique hotel. This retro diner is a nod to the past with a contemporary flair. The large windows add natural light and gives the space a warm and inviting atmosphere. A large communal table, located in the hotel lobby, will accommodate the overflow of patrons during busy times. Pop-Art photographs of the owner’s moms adorn the walls. Also, framed photos of cultural events that celebrate the diversity of the East Village line the back wall. The food service is casual to complement the relaxed ambiance. Friendly staff take the order at the counter and subsequently bring it your table. The menu is creative, with breakfast and lunch choices I chose the “Falafel Scrambler.” All ingredients are locally sourced and the falafel is made in house. The food was tasty, nutritional and artistically presented in a vintage bowl. As the diner is fully licensed, a sparkling mimosa complemented the meal. Every effort is made to provide the patrons with quality food and excellent service in a cheerful atmosphere. CHIX Eggshop lives up to the high standards of chefs Connie, John and the culinary team. I WILL defentily return to this friendly neighborhood restaurant. I highly recommend CHIX...
