Being a very recently; newly opened dessert cafe (first of its kind in the city); it was to be expected that Fuwa Fuwa receive a large amount of traffic and attention in its first few weeks; however the sheer volume and traffic very much was unexpected; and thus the reviews reflect the chaos that resulted.
I visited Fuwa Fuwa a week after this fact (on a Friday a few minutes after opening and the location was already filling with people wishing to try. There were still however some spots available and as such; we were able to get seated and order without issue.
As some people have mentioned however, the wait times for the food are not as quick as anyone (customers, employees and owner) would like. From ordering to the final plate of our order came; it took around a total of 50 minutes (for two orders of pancakes; one slice of premade roll cake; and two drinks). In normal circumstances this would very much be unacceptable (especially due to the fact that we had come in 3 minutes after opening there was no lineup; just tables of people who had already ordered); however, in the current situation wherein the location is freshly opened with brand new; not fully conditioned with the situation staff; I feel that I felt more pity rather than anger.
A sort of funny aside to this fact that we had run into is that; due to our drinks having arrived first prior to the pancakes; and us wishing to consume the drinks only after the pancakes had arrived; it became the case that the paper straw for the strawberry lychee drink became unusable (it literally collapsed within the drink and would not allow us to suck up any fluid whatsoever.) Customers beware if they wish to do such as well to NOT put in their paper straws into their drinks in such scenarios as they may also reach the same result.
If you have around 2-3 hours to spend with your friends or loved ones and wish to try something new and are in no rush; I can recommend that you come in the near future; even on the weekends during peak times; however if you feel that you do not wish to bother with such waits; then some non peak weekday time would be your best course of action for success.
Finally, onto the portion about the food. The pancakes were very much very fluffy, cute and tasty. at about 4-5" in diameter and 1-2 inches in height (just some crude estimates I made without actually measuring) the pancakes are a respectable size for the type of establishment Fuwa Fuwa is. (Yes I very much would have preferred bigger pancakes for the price; as with all the other reviews; I still felt fulfilled with the size given.)
The two pancake types we had ordered where the blueberry cheese and the signature. Both were quite delicious and we had no complaints. We were initially confused where the "cheese" part of the pancake came into play; but after cutting into the pancakes did we realize that there was as slice of cheddar cheese sandwiched between the two pancakes.
As for the slice of roll cake; we ordered the matcha and; although small; was a very interesting take on a matcha roll cake. The internal cream filling had a sort of saltiness to it (similar to a salted caramel sort of vibe) that was quite interested to consume.
For the drinks, we had a Hazelnut Twist Frappe and Lychee Strawberry Iced Tea. The Hazelnut twist had a shot of espresso, and was quite refreshing; tasting similar to a chocolate milk kind of drink by the latter half. The Lychee Strawberry was quite nice as well; with lychee jelly and strawberry seeds mixed in.
To conclude; I very much did enjoy Fuwa Fuwa but one must set their expectations to having to possibly wait quite long periods for their food. I very much understand the one star and other lower reviews due to the unexpected wait times; but I feel that in the future; when all is settled that Fuwa Fuwa will be able to increase its google rating and serve many more...
Read moreMy friends and I came in just before noon on a Sunday. It wasn’t very busy, but we were told it would take about 40 minutes to get our food. That was fine, we ordered from the brunch menu and added bottomless coffee.
We waited about 20 minutes before realizing no one had brought our coffee, so we went up to ask for it. It came in to-go containers, and we had to ask the server for sugar and cream. They gave us one sugar packet per person and didn’t offer spoons or stir sticks. No one checked in or offered coffee refills, even though it was supposed to be bottomless.
When a nearby family left, we moved to their table and had to clean it ourselves. No one came by to wipe it down or ask if we needed anything. Around an hour into waiting, someone from the staff told my friend they had run out of avocados. She asked to be refunded for the avocado portion, but they cancelled her entire order without telling her. We only found out when the other two meals finally arrived (about 90 minutes after we ordered) and hers didn’t. At that point, they said it was cancelled. She was left with nothing, and we ended up sharing our meals with her. They also made her feel like it was her mistake and miscommunication, so I stepped up and asked if they could bring her something, which they eventually did (a piece of cheesecake and a roll).
When the food came, it arrived without utensils. They brought us a pile of cutlery that seemed freshly washed, still wet, placed on a few crumpled wet napkins. It felt careless. To make matters worse, the washrooms were out of service, which added to the overall frustration. They also weren’t making espresso drinks that day, so most of the coffee menu wasn’t available either.
This was my first time visiting Fuwa Fuwa. I’ve driven by many times and always wanted to try it, but this experience was enough to make sure I won’t be back. I’m usually very chill about wait times and small mistakes, but this felt like one issue after another, with no communication and no effort to make things right. It really ruined our...

I was so excited to hear that Fuwa Fuwa has taken establishment in Calgary, i've always wanted to try Japanese-style pancakes. I walked in during the week and only a couple tables were being occupied by couples, but apparently on the weekends they have very long line-ups toward 45 min wait-times due to the excitement of other's trying the trendy dishes.
The two people working (one employee, one manager) were some of the kindest people i've met in the food service industry. They were really helpful to describe to me the differences between the dishes and desserts, where i picked out one of each that looked the most appealing.
The dishes were made fairly fast, i think i waited 5 mins max until i got dropped off to my table. The pancakes are made-to-order fresh, fluffy, thick and the sauce was absolutely balanced delicious! I highly recommend eating the pancakes with some kind of sauce as they need something acidic like fresh fruit sauce to balance the flour based pancakes. My only concern was that my pancakes seemed to be a little rushed and were a bit too undercooked to my liking, but the whole dish was delicious and filled me up.
Next came the Japanese-style Cheesecake - a dream of mine to try, and it was absoultely fabulous!! So good i fantasize about returning and having another piece. Cheesecake lovers know when it's made mostly with real cheese and not starch fillers. You could really taste the cheese in this and it's fabulous! Also loved the caramelized outside edge of the cheese.
The manager was such a total sweetheart and was so enthusiastic about giving me the best service and background info about the company. My visit was delightful and looking forward to coming back. Thank...
