I have gone twice since the it opened so I think I can give a better review. Between my two visits, I have ordered 5 things: Durian Crepe cake: Nice texture, very fluffy and creamy on the inside but on the edge you get some of the crepe crisp. Not as strong of a durian taste as other places. Tofu Dessert: Really good texture of the tofu, and I got the konjac noodles on top so it wasn't too sweet. However, I ordered the brown sugar pearl and I didn't get any pearls in it. Mixed Sauce Rice Cake: Most disappointing thing I got. It's more like rice crepes that you get from dim sum instead of chewy rice cakes and the sauces are set aside for you to put the sauces on, The most of the sauces are the ones you probably have in your own pantry (hoisin, xo, chili) and for 7 bucks, it's better to just skip it. Cheese waffle: Cheese was okay good meltiness with little a bit of salt, probably just normal mozzarella. Waffle texture had a bit of graininess to it. I was confused why it was a stick/takeaway chopsticks; they give it to you in a paper wrap anyways, so putting a stick in it just seemed like a waste of chopsticks. Mango Mochi: Very simple, it's just mochi just wrapped around a half mango. But also really good. Right texture for the mochi, mango fresh and juicy. However, it takes a long time for it to be ready, so if you order it, expect enough time for a walk along the river before you get it. Both times, I had a long wait time to both order and get my order, so if you plan on making the visit, make sure to budget at least five to ten minutes of standing in line and a half hour to an hour...
Read moreWe went back to Mama Desserts (for the third time). I was really excited for this place because of the mochi we got at the Cuties Market.
We finally were able to buy the strawberry and mango mochi. The mochi dough was light, chewy and stretchy. I really liked the strawberry one, it had a lightly sweet cream inside. I also liked it with red bean at the market. The mango one was good too, just didn’t enjoy it as much. The wait time was also acceptable - it was only 20 minutes, but we did get there when they opened at 5.
I really hope they can pull through and improve, this shop could be great.
———————————————————-ORIGINAL review - I went there the first day of their soft opening around 7pm - they had sold out of their fruit mochi. There was no updates on their website or Instagram.
My boyfriend went right when they opened on Thursday (yesterday). He went to the front of the line and asked if they had fruit mochi, to which they advised they did. He waited 30 minutes in line, and when he finally got to the counter, they said “oh sorry, we only have fruit mochi for those that pre ordered”. I have not read any indication on the website, Instagram or google that you could pre order, and why make my boyfriend wait in line for that?
Super disappointing and we haven’t even...
Read moreCame here with the family to try out these desserts. Mama Dessert is a quaint little shop, with very limited seating, so more of a take out place. They do have an outdoor table, but just one, and it can maybe seat 6. The decor is charming, very Japanese, bright and happy.
We ordered a tofu dessert, honeydew ice cream Mochi, mango sago Pana cotta, and a giant mango mochi. The portion sizes are good, larger than expected. The giant mango mochi is literally 1/2 fresh mango wrapped in a mochi skin. The Pana cotta was smooth and not too sweet. The tofu dessert wasn't too sweet, and with the included topping, quite nice. And the honeydew ice cream Mochi was tasty.
I think overall the mochi skin was a bit too thick. It's nice and chewy but you can't dig through it with a spoon easily, making the mochi ice cream a challenge to eat. Also, my ice cream was already very melty when I received my order making it a bright green mess. It's tasty, but not elegant. The wrap works better on the fresh mango as it's not as soft so it can be eaten a lot more enjoyably.
Overall a good experience, and will give them another go in the future. Maybe they will refine what they have to make the experience...
