Anyone who has been living in Calgary for 20 years and has been eating sushi in Calgary would be familiar with the name Sukiyaki house. It was one of the earlier (if not the earliest sushi restaurant in Calgary). Originally operated by Japanese and with a traditional Japanese decoration, the place disappeared along with the reconstruction on the 10ave. My son bought up this restaurant and we were surprised to find another restaurant under the same name. I have no clue whether this restaurant has anything to do with the original one but it certainly looks very different. The look is ultra modern with minimalistic decoration. In other words, you cannot tell if it is a Japanese or an Italian restaurant. As for the food, the sushi were fresh and tasty, just like any Japanese restaurant who is charging the top tier pricing. For example, chirashi sushi was $30 vs $25 at Roku (before it was closed). Service was fast and prompt, and reservation is recommended. The restaurant filled up fast on a Monday night. You won't be disappointed with the sushi taste, yet I was not drawn to return to try out other dishes like the other sushi restaurant I tried in June (please see my other reviews). Like the old Sukiyaki house, this place also has shabu-shabu, but the menu states it needs one day of notification, so we did not try. As such, it deserves a solid 4 stars.

Food was delicious 10/10, loved the sukiyaki ribeye and the sushi rolls we ordered, but our first impression of the service wasn't up to our expectations. It was our first time trying this dish, as our waiter set down the things for the sukiyaki ribeye didn't care to mention the dish. (it looked like there was no broth and we were poking at it until another waiter told us by convivence to let it sit and boil ) Also one of the sides (rice) wasn't even filled up it was 2/3 full I thought for a $68 meal they could have at least fill it up. As we were eating the sukiyaki ribeye, it was delicious and had that melting feeling in your mouth. We ordered the sushi when we got the appetizers, finished it, and half way into our main course still haven't received it. The waiter came out of convivence I reminded her of our order and she said ill check on it, waited probably another 10 minutes so it sounded like she just put it in the order. We just felt neglected during our dinner while they were serving other people. its kind of too bad that I want to come back here for the food but not the service. **UPDATE*** Her name was Judith (on receipt)

If there could be a separate star rating for food it would be 5 stars. The chefs delivered nothing but stellar food. The sushi was fresh and the rice was cooked and seasoned to perfection. Presentation was artful and beautiful. Everything was A+.

Unfortunately that’s where my compliments end.

I chose this restaurant for my husbands birthday with 8 of our friends. I chose Sukiyaki House knowing it’s a high end restaurant and I expected the service to be on par.

When we ordered Sukiyaki hot pot (their namesake) we were given different messages from the server who sat us and the one who took our order. For a variety of very confusing reasons she said she couldn’t satisfy our order. Without getting into too much detail she made us all feel like we were bothering her for our request to order a dish off their menu. In the end we insisted on ordering it and none of the reasons she outlined were actually an issue for us. Of all the things she said, what bothered me most is when she suggested my husband “sit alone at a corner table by himself” for his birthday. Verbatim. I don’t know if she was being sarcastic or dead serious but either way is shockingly offensive and not helpful. It was hard to not let the service bring down our mood for the evening.

Throughout the entire meal her professionalism was subpar and very disappointing for a restaurant of this caliber.

As the one who booked this reservation I am embarrassed. My husband was a good sport and enjoyed himself but I felt bad that I had to make him feel this way on his birthday and that I brought all our friends and we all had to experience this tension together.

I’m so sorry to the kitchen for this negative review because the food was...

Went for dinner with friends, I ordered separately as I try to only eat sustainable seafood (the menu didn't indicate where any of the fish was from or how it was caught). I had seen sablefish on the menu online, (which is a 'best choice' or 'good alternative'), and was excited to have it. After ordering, the waitress came back to let me know the sablefish wasn't ready yet (it was marinating) - very surprising as we were having a late dinner (7:30pm) on Friday night. I ended up ordering steak on her suggestion, a disappointing replacement in my opinion (we live in YYC, you can get steak everywhere!). I will give credit - it was really well cooked, and beautifully plated. The texture & taste of the potatoes & Brussels were perfect. The portion appears a bit small when first set down, but it did also come with miso soup, a salad, and rice, which rounds the meal out nicely. Just disappointing to not to get your first choice off the menu! (Maybe take it off the menu and put it as a special if you're not able to have it ready every night?!) I also had the dessert trio - the créme brûlée was definitely the star. Silky smooth & creamy without being thick & heavy, it's lightly flavoured with sake, and comes with your choice of ice cream on the side. Would come back here just for that!! The trio portions were quite small when compared to the regular size single options (not great value, go for regular size!). Our server - Judith - guided us through the menu and made wonderful (and honest!) suggestions. I would suggest calling beforehand to check availability of items if you have your heart set...

Brought my son and partner out for some sushi here. We thought there was over use of flying fish roe in our specialty rolls and the other rolls were just mediocre. Same with the tempura and gyoza. We left and drove for a bit and my stomach started to feel off then eventually in pain. My partner said she felt sick as well. We called the restaurant to let them know and the guy who answered, who said he was the manager, said they’ve never gotten a complaint and that it could not be from their food but probably from something else we had eaten. Told him we had not eaten anything prior to their restaurant. We had a late start to the day and got there at about 1pm. He began to talk over me at times, apologizing but also telling me that it’s not from their food because the chefs were trained in Japan. In my experience I’ve eaten at so many sushi restaurants, some higher end and some lower, in my life and this was probably the worst sushi I’ve had. I was not feeling appetized as I left but having pain and diarrhea about half hour later was not on my card for the day. Im from out of the city and leaving tomorrow so paying 90 dollars for 3 rolls and some appetizers just to be sick for the rest of my day just ruined my Calgary experience. We also asked for a refund and he said they never give refunds. Not great customer service. And just because you’ve never gotten anyone sick before doesn’t mean it can’t happen for a first time. I would not recommend this place. Go to NUPO if you want great sushi it’s ten...
