Mama Jean Kitchen — Restaurant in Cambridge

Tried Mama Jean's last night for the first time. We were very eager to try it after reading the reviews. It is closer to our home than our usual place which was also a plus. The young lady on the phone was very pleasant to deal with. The restaurant looked very cute outside and the portion sizes were impressive.

We ordered exactly what we order at our normal place which usually costs us about $80.00. We just about choked when our total rang up at $120! We thought we were in for a treat though because of the reviews.

When it came to the food:

Steamed rice- this was like one solid puck of rice. It wasn't nice and fluffy where you could just use a fork to fluff it.

Lemon chicken- the chicken was tough and overcooked while the breading seemed undercooked (I am not sure how that happened). It resembled schnitzel. Sauce had a weird taste.

Chicken Balls- They were just slightly smaller than a billiard ball. There was an overcooked and dry piece of chicken smaller than the size of a grape in this ball. The exterior of the dough was nice and crisp but the inside was mushy. Sauce was good.

Sweet and Sour pork had good flavor but the pork was so dry and tough.

Spring rolls - couldn't even finish eating one. The outside was nice and crispy but the inside was mushy.

When we usually eat Chinese (with the exception of my son who usually only has one good size plate) we usually fill our plates at least twice. With this meal my husband is the only one that finished his first plate. He did not go back for seconds. Usually if there are left overs we are excited for the extra meals. We had lots of leftovers but we were not excited about it.

So disappointed with our experience. Sadly some of the worst Chinese food we have eaten. We will definitely not be returning.

We moved just south of Cambridge about 5 years ago. During these 5 years we have tried all 5 of the main Chinese restaurants, for take out only.

We discovered Mama Jean Kitchen last fall. Mama Jeans is our favourite by far !!!!

My wife loves Hot & Sour Soup. She says Mama Jean’s is the best she’s ever had. When we order her Hot & Sour soup we order a large, because a large comes in two containers, so she can enjoy the second one the next day :)

Every dish we have ordered has always been great, from their chicken balls, chicken chow mein, sechuan wonton. My favourite is their chicken fried rice. I always have mine without pees. I am quite particular about my chicken fried rice, and Mama Jeans makes it exactly how I like it. The portions are large, so I enjoy heating up the remainder for lunch the next day.

The interactions I have had when picking up the food has always been great. The ladies and the young man, are always happy and eager to please. I met the owner/cook once, nice guy too :))
