STAY AWAY!! I went to see Comedian Craig Gass, and I was really looking forward to the show. I brought 6 people along as it was also my sister's birthday, and we were really disappointed.
We arrived at 8pm, and were told that because the first show was still running we weren't permitted entry. We had our tickets scanned and were given wristbands and told "come back at 9pm and we'll let let you right in". We had already parked underground and paid for parking, so we didnt want to drive anywhere. There was a torrential rain storm, so soaking wet, we went back to the parkade to wait someplace dry. We came back around 8:40pm to find a huge line of 20-30 people had assembled all waiting to get in the doors. Some people had wristbands like ours, some just had their tickets. Everybody was soaked through. We waited outside until 9, when they began to permit some people entry, allowing only small groups. I got in, and there were only seats for about half the crowd. Everyone else had to stand. I managed to save some seats for my friends, only to discover management was now halting entry at the door. This resulted in heated exchanges over people unhappy that I was saving seats and they had nowhere to sit. I spoke to Security, saying my friends were stuck at the door and was "Oh well, thats a management decision" when FINALLY my friends who had been waiting an hour and fifteen minutes in the rain were permitted in the door.
The room was dingy, dirty and looked like it was falling apart.
There was NO food or drink service, if you wanted a beer you needed to make your way across the damp congested room to the bar (counterproductive to a comedy show where you want everyone seated & focused on the comedian)
There was NO clear path to any exits, and I'm certain had the Fire Marshall seen the setup, they would've shut the place down. Because everyone was wet, and standing, it was humid and uncomfortable. The bathrooms were vile.
I wanted a refund, but Craig Gass made the best of a bad situation making fun of how awful the venue was and promising to make it up to his fans next time he was in Edmonton. I felt he deserved my money for the show he put on.
I will NEVER see a show at Brixx or the Starlite Room again and will ensure my friends are aware of what awaits them if they...
Read moreWent outside for a moment to meet a friend and even let the waitress know I'd be right back and she chased me outside and humiliated me demanding my debit card like I was going to dine and dash on a 13 dollar sandwich with no sides. Awesome jam on Sundays though. Great musicians. Asked for a gin and soda and got a gin and tonic and attitude when I took it back after all that. And now I see your response, I was not going anywhere in my friend's car and was only going to be a moment, if we drove away you would have had the plate number. My belongings I took with me of course, my purse and bag I did not want stolen as I was outside, like the waitress said and as I have seen there are many street people in the area some of whom come in and steal from the bar and she compared that to me. I have been there for the Sunday jam several times and know many of the musicians. Each time I have ordered food and drinks and paid my bill. It is not the first time I have have been treated rudely there by a waitress. When I told her I ordered a gin and soda she told me that is what it was with a hateful attitude. I said no sorry this is tonic. On a good note the brisket is good when you dine in, it would be nice if it came with a side for the price. If people are stealing from you, like the waitress said happens often, maybe stop running tabs for all your paying customers. I sat for quite a while at my table after arriving and noone took my order so I went to the bar and ordered there. That has happened every time. The bartender was very nice. I would have been back on Sunday, but no. Kind of sad, because I live so close and really enjoyed the jam. It would be better too if there was a women's washroom. The piano is...
Read moreThis is a hidden gem in the heart of downtown. They occupy the space below the famous Starlite room. One of Edmonton’s greatest live music venues. If you happen to be there for a show, come early and pop into River City for a bite to eat. They have an awesome menu with clever music related names for all the items. The menu was created and prepared by a red seal chef, and you can tell. It is not your typical pub grub. They always have a new soup for you to try and I haven’t been disappointed yet! My personal favourite menu item was the “3 Cheese Down” which is a grilled cheese with bacon and tomato jam. I say it WAS my favourite because I recently tried the “King” which is currently not on the menu but it is a feature sandwich. It’s a fried Banana and peanut butter sandwich with bacon. It is INCREDIBLE! Elvis would be proud! Besides the food, the staff are all well trained and very friendly. They also have something fun going on every night like Trivia, open jams, vintage video games, or Karaoke. Go show this gem the love it deserves, you...
