When we went in, there were only 3 tables with customers for a total of 7 customers. It was not busy at all. My family of 4 came in and were initially directed to a table for at least 10 people. We opted for a table for 4 that was free.
The server apparently was in training and not very friendly. She ended up bringing out food for a table of 3. Another table of 2 that was next to us was very frustrated and stated that they had been there before the table of 3 and did not understand why the table of 3 had been served first. They got up and left after telling the owner that the service was terrible.
The owner and the employee then started discussing this in front of other customers including my family in the middle of the restaurant.
After that, she got my fiancé's coffee order and brought us our drinks but my fiancé asked for cream and sugar. She brought back the cream but no sugar and did not come back for quite some time. When she did come back, he asked for the sugar again. She went and got the sugar bowl and then proceeded to place it on the wrong table and did not even realize it until she turned around and saw my fiancé with a coffee cup.
Finally, she took our order. Again, not very friendly. When she brought out the fish and chips I ordered, she seemed like she was struggling with the plates and ended up spilling fries all over me and a few on the floor.
The owner seemed really nice and asked us how our food was. I will say that the food was absolutely amazing! It is the best fish and chips I've had in the entire city. Unfortunately, it did not make up for the really unprofessional and unfriendly service from the server. As someone who has served myself, even during training, I was ALWAYS friendly and polite to my customers.
At the end of our meal, the server did not ask or offer us dessert at all. She then asked me three times if I needed the machine and after almost 25 minutes (keeping in mind when she initially asked our family was the only table to attend) I finally got the machine from the owner while my family waited in the car.
I'm so disappointed in the service and would suggest that anyone who wants this food either get take out or delivery because for Saturday that wasn't too busy, the service was just absolute garbage (minus the owner being friendly and asking how our food was). But for that kind of service and an $80+ bill, I didn't tip because aside from the food actually being decent, the entire experience left my family feeling very...
Read moreOkay so I came across this place through TripAdvisor. The photos we had seen of the sizes of a piece of fish looked like a joke. A piece prettt much as big as the plate just didn’t seem real.
In walking into this place I have never actually been to a fish and chips place in Europe. I imagine it may look something like this or be as homey as this one is. Wonderful colors on the wall and art all around. Loved to look around and see all the random things around.
We stopped in tonight to check it out and try this big fish and chips. We started with some calamari and mozzarella sticks. Now mozzarella sticks are pretty safe bet, these ones had a really crisp putter that was nice. On the calamari it was so damn tasty that we did not even need to really use the sauce, yes the sauce is good but stand alone it’s delicious! Not over cooked and easy to chew and they actually give a lemon slice! A big slice of one as well ensuring you can cover your calamari, very nice!
Our fish and chips came out and no joke, it’s damn near as big as the plate. We got one piece and chips each and got damn! That was overly filling but filling as in able to eat it all! The batter wa snot stupidly filling right off the bat nor was there an air pocket or over coating of batter. Again they give a massive slice of lemon to coat your fish in and changes the color of the batter as it soaked up that juice Making a crisp bottommbatter and a soft top batter that just need a little tartar sauce (again, do not need the tar tar sauce but it’s a good addition). So eating and enjoying it all was delightful!
The coleslaw had the addition of dill to it, totally make it a better taste then the usual that is all around.
All done by a server working the floor herself and absolutely nailing it! Didn’t slip up our order and we did not have to wait to get our food or a revisit. We will be stopping in and I recommend stopping in to anyone who likes true fish and chips
To sum it up, I will say this is maybe the best relish and chips in Edmonton. The environment alone is reason...
Read moreAs an Australian, I have quite an amount of experience in the consumption of fish and chips, this consists on the sampling of a variety of fish and I even developed the knack of knowing instinctively how old the oil is when frying chips. Since moving to Canada, I have not found a single fish and chip shop that I like ... well, my search is over!
I first came across Winston's Fish & Chips at the Taste of Edmonton, I sampled their offering and was impressed, so impressed that my wife and I decided to pay a visit to their actual restaurant.
The proprietor has worked hard to create the environment of a "traditional" British themed restaurant, it is warm and inviting setting. The waiting staff was very warm and friendly, and willing to answer any questions concerning the menu.
Our dinners were, in a word, excellent ... the fish was well cooked and "fluffy" (just melts in the mouth), the chips were extra crispy (best chips I have ever had), and the coleslaw much better than what I have had in other fish and chip shops. For dessert, I decided on the Sticky Date Pudding, I have had many Sticky Date Puddings in the past but "OMG", this was the best I have ever tasted.
We had the opportunity to meet with one of the owners, Jay, we found him very personable, he obviously takes great pride in his offerings, explaining where he sources his menu items and how he is always looking to improve the quality and taste of his offerings.
My wife and I will definitely be returning to WInston's Fish & Chips and also recommending the...
