From hfxnoise on Instagram: “On March 27th around midnight, my partner Dan & 1 kissed at our table at Oasis Pub (5661 Spring Garden Rd). A security guard approached us and told us to stop. We were extremely upset, offended & scared to react so we get up to pay and leave immediately The karaoke host called me over to check in because we are old friends and he let me know what he saw from his perspective. He advised based on his experience in the space, that we were told to stop kissing because we were "two girls" (Dan & I are under the nonbinary umbrella but we are perceived as women and are okay with that.) I felt validated in the moment and also very hurt when it finally sunk in we had experienced homophobia. We left to pay for our drinks at the bar & I told the manger on duty what happened. He told us confidently there's nothing they can do because their security is "contracted" and they are "contracted workers". We accepted his answer because we felt the need to leave for our own safety and comfort. For full transparency, I (Jade) did give the security guard two middle fingers on the way out. Not very mature of me and I accept full responsibility for that and apologize. On my way home, I decided to warn my network of queers & allies about what I experienced so they could form their own opinions. I knew nothing about what security company works with Oasis or what other contracts they have. I had no idea it would spread so fast as we slept. I just wanted to warn my friends so they could make their own choices on what bars they feel comfortable going to. We weren't making a formal complaint to Oasis or Dynamite Security. The next day we called Oasis to ask which security company they use. They told us they use Dynamite Security. For context we knew nothing about this company at this point. All we know is what we were told by the Oasis manager we spoke to...
Read moreSo, personally, I have never liked going to a pub or a club. I have always felt that that is not my kind of place. I've always had a not so good feeling in such places. However, the Oasis Pub is such a place where I felt at peace. Regardless of such places not being my scene, this place is a perfect place for friends and/or family to sit, have a nice meal and beer and also enjoy live events such as karaoke, live music, stand up comedy and much more. I had gone to this pub after walking out of a nightclub as I got bored there and did not much like the whole scene. When I entered the Oasis Pub, I thought this might be the same and I might not like it here. I was wrong. I loved the place and I ended up drinking a few beers despite me going there alone. I saw all the noise and all the people having fun and it felt nice! Everybody (and I mean everybody) was having a time of their life and seeing that I also enjoyed my time there. Apart from the atmosphere in there, the staff is very friendly and very outgoing. I would definitely go to this place again without giving it a second thought. Based on where this place is situated, it feels like you're travelling through a door into the past. There aren't many things such as disco lights or loud songs. However, there is one thing that you'll always see; togetherness. People come there to take a break from everything and spend time with their loved ones. There's a lot to do too apart from music, karaoke and all. They've got arcade games, pool and a lot more on the menu of fun!
I'd definitely recommend this place and you should surely check it out if you're reading this review to the end!
PS: my 4 stars don't mean it wasn't a perfect experience. I haven't been a fan of such places so I've never given a 5 star to them (I've never even thought of reviewing a place) but this place is different (a...
Read moreTo start off, they placed us in an unlit corner that was so dark we needed to use the flash lights on our phones to read the menu. The bar/pub had A very run down vibe, located in an awkward shaped basement.
Pop has no refills, it’s 2.75 for a can...
It took us 15 minutes to get the first round of drinks,
The waitress forgot my cup of ice, that took another 15 minutes...
We eventually got her attention to order food, and when she did she came back 20 minutes later saying the kitchen lost our order and she needed to take it again... the staff were constantly gathering together chatting and laughing to themselves ignoring customers.
When the food eventually came, portion sizes were small, wings were only warm and the nachos were unbelievably small for the $16 they cost..
Security was rude, and Karaoke was so loud we had to yell across the table to carry a conversation.
We were there for almost 3 hours, it took forever to flag down someone so we could pay our bill.. and there is a surcharge to use the debit machine!!
Not impressed in the least.. I...
