Amigo seems an unlikely name for a Chinese restaurant but may serve as a good reminder of where to get the best "Salt & Pepper Pork Chops". The "All Dressed" is the most popular version there and their bread and butter staple. No other Chinese restaurant can even come close to the quality and taste of this signature dish. For the uninitiated, The All Dressed Salt & Pepper Pork Chop combo includes 5 to 6 pieces of lightly battered pork chops (some may have bone in), a side of sauteed greens, plain fried rice with a pan fried egg (runny). It's a hungry man dish , most patrons cannot finish the entire dish. All this scrumptiousness for only a measly 12 bucks, can t find a better deal for such a large serving. They also do a chicken dish called "Mayonnaise Chicken", which is also another specialty of the house. Very lightly battered chicken strips, deep fried and then sauteed with a golden colored sweet and tarty sauce, the taste is hard to describe and has to be tried to form one's own description of this unique taste. This dish is also served in other Chinese restaurant, but no one does it like Amigo can. The two signature dishes are what Amigo is known for but everything on the menu is done in their own special way. There are authentic Chinese dishes and these are written and displayed on the walls, the American style Chinese food can be found on their regular menu. It's a very popular spot for dining on the weekends and for late night munchies; they close at 4pm on Friday and Saturdays. Very good food at a very good price served by a...
Read moreI thought I had tried most of the Cantonese restaurants in Chinatown but somehow missed Amigo as their entrance is so unassuming, you could walk right past and miss it!
I was disappointed that the dishes we ordered were very mediocre: the noodles and fried rice were quite bland. My daughter thought the wonton soup was just ok. The best dish by far was the sauteed snow pea shoots, which was on special - it seemed like all the flavour in our entire meal went into that one dish! So maybe Amigo is better known for their dinner menu, rather than lunch.
However, the service was warm and accommodating, though it gets bogged down when it gets too busy. And the prices are good, so maybe we'll give dinner a try at some point.
*Response to owner: Thanks for the inquiry! Both the pan-fried rice noodles with beef and the fried rice with bbq pork & shrimp had little to no salt or flavour, especially compared to the pea shoots (which was perfectly seasoned). Why are some dishes well seasoned, but others not? If we wanted less salt, we'd request it, but we have no issues with sodium, so usually we'd assume that a dish would be...
Read moreToday I ordered the salt and pepper pork chops, sweet and sour pork, and beef fried flat noodles.
The pork chops were really delicious, and they were generous with the portions! They weren't too salty either, and the batter was crispy.
The sweet and sour pork... I'm not sure what happened but it didn't seem like they fried the batter long enough? It was really mushy even though we ate the food right away in the car. In addition, it was all fatty pieces of pork. The portion was really small, and there were way more vegetables compared to pieces of pork :( The sauce was really delicious though! So that was a bit of a let down.
The beef fried flat noodles were delicious, and it had a lot of wok hei! The noodles didn't break either, so that's a sign of a good chef. However, the portions were small which was disappointing again :(
I'd recommend eating in, instead of getting take-out. Since the portions are bigger if you dined-in! Unfortunately today, we had to eat in the car since we were in a hurry. But definitely get the...
