I won't pretend to keep my review short. This will try to go into detail about my experience here. We came here as one of our stops checking out a bunch of the clubs, pubs and lounges in the area (we visited this establishment on the saturday of the victoria day long weekend, May 20). At first when we got here, I thought it was an okay spot, with music that was not my cup of tea but we gave it a shot. It wasn't too crowded, and we were able to get to one of the many bars no problem so we stuck around for a bit. As the night went on, the music took a turn for the better so we were pleased with our choice and decided to stick around and continue to order drinks. This is where our trouble started. I approached one of the bars (which was btw had no one else waiting for drink orders) and i tried to catch the attention of the bartender. She saw me and moved past, but I thought nothing of it as I assumed she had some duty to do first. Then a couple came up beside me and waved her down and she immediately flew over to them. At this point let me pause the story and give you some insight. I am a Brown (south asian descent) male (30 yo), dressed upscale casual. The couple that waved her down was a Caucasian couple, dressed casually in the same age range. At this point I was irked, but i made nothing of it. As she finally approached me and took my order she was very dismissive and made her disdain for me very clear. I was confused, but said nothing, got my order paid my bill and moved on. At this point, I made a mention to my girlfriend about how that felt super racist, but i'll let it be. The next time another member of our entourage approached the bar (completely unaware of my experience) he had a very similar experience. He tried to get the attention of this bartender and she completely ignored him. He then tried to get her attention by saying hey and a slightly above normal volume as there is loud music going on. She ignores him and tells his friend standing beside him that she needs the first guy to stop yelling at her. Proceeds to tell the second guy that she will be calling security as he's 'yelling' at her. At this point are whole entourage is disgusted and we decide it's not worth ruining our weekend and grabbed our jackets and left the spot.
I want to make a few things very clear, if I felt if any of us were out of hand I would not be writing this review. If this disgusting treatment didn't happen to multiple members of our party, I would not have written a review. But at this point i feel that I'm obliged to write this so people of colour understand the treatment they should expect at this establishment.
For management wondering, the bartender was a caucasian female wearing a red dress with a blazer and had glasses on. (May 20).
I'd also like to add that two of the persons of our entourage are prominent Deejays in Toronto who quite frequently come to Montreal to perform for the club scene. My primary employment is with a marketing company. I know how much bad press like this can spiral out of control.
We will now be going out of our way to discourage people of colour from frequenting this establishment. The treatment was absolutely disgusting and I will make sure people hear about this constantly.
If you're reading this and are a person of colour, be weary. It doesn't matter how well dressed, well intentioned, well mannered you are. You will not be treated equally here. Save your money and your gratuity and go to another...
Read moreThis was the high point of our visit to Montreal - the whole trip was great (thanks for asking!), but this just returned to top it all off.
We were taken here for a couple visits with local friends who chose Winston's because it stands out so much. Ok, the mural of Leonard Cohen also stands out, but I would say that Winston's matches it; the pub and the nightclub both provide guests with the best - great food, great service, great entertainment.
The whole of Crescent Street is entertaining; we walked through here on our first night in town and that made us want to come back. When we came back a few days later we were given the best at Winston's.
The pub was a super place to spend an afternoon sipping drinks on the deck. We shared a bunch of dishes: the pizza was simple but fulfilling - the crust worked beautifully with the tomato sauce and pepperoni and there was an excellent amount of cheese on top. The poutine worked just as well - we all wanted even more when it was done - and from there we loved the jambalaya and shared a couple tasty salads to try to be healthy. It all was all looking and smelling - and then tasting - so good that I didn't get any pictures of food! (well, only the last slice of pizza)
The hostess and waitress were so nice and gave us a little tour of the different floors in the afternoon before the club opened up that evening, so I took some photos. The club - Winnie's - is a big space and it filled smoothly. There's a few bars in there, a lot of bartenders, and great bottle service at the tables! The DJs kept the club thumping - ah, it took me back. Most people were a lot younger than the few in our group that are middle aged, but the whole place just worked for all.
We wandered out to the street and then went back upstairs to finish the night off. Again, the whole street was having a good time but we loved Winston's. Excellent staff again, and a great selection so we got a wide range of drinks enjoy; and easy way to have something different each time.
A super pub and my favorite club of the millennium. We'll be looking forward to it next time we're...
Read moreWent there with five friends on Grand Prix Saturday. The place was full and we sat on the second floor terrasse around 6pm. The waiter was barely giving us any attention, to the point where I ordered a beer to myself and by the time my friend was going to order hers, she had already turned her back without even letting us ask for water. At 8pm, the waiter told us we had to leave as they had a reservation for 8:30pm. We were really upset not because we had to leave, but because we were never informed about this reservation. We did not expect having to leave the restaurant in the middle of the pouring rain outside. We tried to solve the situation and another waiter tried to relocate us to the table on the side, but we weren't allowed to because they needed the chairs for the reservation. After searching with this waiter for tables on all levels only to find a full house, we were quickly ushered (or kicked out) of the restaurant by all staff and security who encountered us. We still hadn't paid our bill, and we were trying to go up and pay for what we consumed, but then again, security kicked us out (by repeatedly saying "If you don't have a table you have to leave now"). Finally, already outside of the restaurant (in the rain) and still trying to figure out how to solve the bill situation, an upset waiter came and dragged us back inside to pay for our bill. The entire situation was absurd, from being kicked out of the table without receiving a bill to pay, being unable to go back inside and then dragged back as if we were trying to leave without paying for what we ordered. We spoke to managers, the waiters and everyone we could about this situation and everyone would just reply with "The house is full, there's nothing we can do". Will absolutely never come back, it is ridiculous to spend so much money in an bar to be...
