When Leapolds was full one night, we (four of us) found this place. It was quieter (only one other person) and had my beer and we found out the food was actually very good. I was teaching a Square Dance class and then hosting summer dances, near by, so we continued to go here every week (or two in the summer) and invited the rest of the dancers to join us. Here is where the disappointment comes. We are a group, and want to sit together at one big table. There is a place with lower chairs near the door, perfect for a group of older people to sit at one large table. Each time we wanted to push the tables together, one of the waitresses would try to move us to the high chair tables and have us be at separate tables. She said that we would block the door. So, we carefully moved the tables so there was no way we were blocking the door. Then she said that we should have called ahead, so I thought that meant that they would reserve the area by the front door with the normal tables and have them pushed together for us. Nope, this is the 14th week we have gone there as a group and this time someone who appeared to be a manager came out and yelled at us. She was visibly upset and angry and said we had been told multiple times (I guess she meant the other weeks) that we were to sit at the tall tables. She used the excuse that it was too difficult for the waitress to serve us (see below, I have experience working in a bar; I looked at the tables we had pulled together and it was very easy for a waitress to get around to serve us) and then she tried saying that people could not access the one table that was still in the corner, but we told her there were at least 13 of us coming and we would also pull that table over and use it. She still continued to rant at us until I asked if she wanted us to go somewhere else? It was bizarre behaviour, to say the least. Forty years ago, I worked as a bartender at Hollywood nightclub, and Dionysus restaurant. From those experiences, I know that staff/managers should do everything in there power to encourage customers. This lady seemed hell bent on discouraging us from coming or from sitting together. This was our last night until January classes start again, but another square dance group will be dancing near by for a few weeks in the fall, and, because I had sent out an email to our members (77 of them) each week, saying we socialized at H&V they also have planned to also socialize afterwards at Hop & Vine. Now, after last night, we all may just need to find a new place to go. Very...
Read moreWe went earlier this week as restaurants had just recently reopened. Our first time here. Initial thoughts, the bar looked awesome. Seating is nicely spaced apart, so it didn’t feel crowded or too loud as we were seated. We ordered a few drinks, the bourbon lemonade was absolutely amazing. We purchased a few appetizers as well. For pub food, we were absolutely astonished. We went with the teriyaki steak bites and they were super tender and full of flavour. The spinach has dip bowl was by far the most amazing one I have ever tried… And we have tried spin dip from nearly everywhere. And on top of that, soft pretzels! Even with the option to have them covered in parmesan. Super awesome and definitely not something you’ll find at any other pub.
We were served by Kim. She was a delight. Super friendly and provided us with some great suggestions. She also told us which nights they have certain specials, which will definitely bring us back in to explore the menu a bit more. She even told us they don’t have a deep fryer in the restaurant! Which is definitely not something you hear from any other restaurant. (Please let Kim know how amazing our experience was!)
Overall, absolutely amazing experience and even better food/drinks. Would definitely recommend if you’re looking for a nice evening...
Read moreThis is a neighbourhood pub with MASSIVE screens and lots of food to choose from. We got a 1oz Strawberry Basil Cocktail ($9), a Hop Burger ($21) with poutine ($3.5), 10” Dill Pickle Pizza ($26.5) and a Peanut Butter Chocolate Cheesecake ($11). Cocktail was really good! Burger was decent. I’m glad the food was tolerable. Pubs in this city have a tendency to have bad food, but it’s not bad here. The bun was low quality but it was a decent burger. I unfortunately hated the poutine. It tasted exactly like McDonald’s Poutine and severely lacking in salt. The pizza was ok, but I would personally not order it again. The bottom was still quite pale, not golden and the toppings easily fell off the pizza. I appreciated the fresh dill, but couldn’t taste the base which was supposed to be house-made tzatziki sauce. I didn’t taste anything that should have said “tzatziki”. Not even lemon. But their bacon is good quality. The cheesecake didn’t taste like peanut butter at all. It was just a cheesecake to me. Which is pretty unfortunate coming from someone that makes cheesecakes all the time. I’m not sure if we’d return, it wasn’t necessarily a bad meal but we’d rather spend our money on fantastic...
