Warning Stay at your own risk!!
We found cockroaches in our two rooms and in the hallways (we were on the second floor). When we showed the cleaning staff the cockroaches they said that they told management about the bugs previously and nothing had been done. They sprayed one of the cockroaches with bug spray and it just scurried up the wall and into the ceiling tiles. Management would not refund us and sent us an invoice saying that the pest company they hired later that day couldn’t find any bugs so the case was closed, despite the pictures and cleaning staff verifying what we saw. We showed the images to a pest control expert who informed us that they are specifically German cockroaches and recommend complete quarantine of all of our belongings, in addition to packing all of our belongings in plastic bags, to ensure the nymphs (babies) which are nearly invisible to the naked eye, couldn’t infest our car or home. This hotel would need to be completely closed for an extended period of time to address the issue. He also informed us that since these cockroaches prefer confined spaces, the fact that they were out in the open tells him that there is an infestation of epic proportions. We are now without a majority of our wardrobes, and absolutely terrified that our home will be infected. The manager and IHG refused to give us a refund. Even if you are reading this review months or even years from now, I still would not recommend staying at this hotel. If they were not willing to pay for a complete pest control evaluation for the entire property, and only requested that the company check two rooms, it demonstrates their complete lack of concern for the safety of their guests and staff. If they weren’t willing to fix the situation immediately, I would be doubtful they ever will. It sickens me to think of the countless guests that may have unknowingly infected their own homes. Please share this information far and wide. I’ve attached information below from Oxford University explaining the seriousness of this German cockroach infestation:
The German cockroach is very successful at establishing an ecological niche in buildings, and is resilient in the face of many pest-control measures. Reasons include: lack of natural predators in a human habitat prolific reproduction short reproductive cycle the ability to hide in very small refuges sexual maturity attained within several weeks, and adaptation and resistance to some chemical pesticides German cockroaches are thigmotactic, meaning they prefer confined spaces, and they are small compared to other pest species, so they can hide within small cracks and crevices that are easy to overlook, thereby evading humans and their eradication efforts. Conversely, the seasoned pest controller is alert for cracks and crevices where it is likely to be profitable to place baits or spray surfaces. The German cockroach is resistant to 42 active ingredients from most major groups of synthetic insecticides. To be effective, control measures must be comprehensive, sustained, and systematic; survival of just a few eggs is quite enough to regenerate a nearly exterminated pest population within a few generations, and recolonization from surrounding populations often is very rapid, too.

Read moreThe hotel is older and it doesn’t appear to be maintained to the standard that represents the Holiday Inn chain. The thermostats on the wall in the room did not work, although they appear to be connected to the wall mounted furnace/ac wirelessly. In the two bedroom suite, the exterior wall bedroom was significantly cooler than the main living area. We were experiencing a cold snap that week but had the heater worked more efficiently it would have been warmer in the bedroom. The bathroom floor squeaked quite loud as if there had been a repair and the floor was covered with plywood and new tile. The floor grout was practically dissolved and no caulking added at the 90 degree by the tub to prevent further water entrance under the tile floor. The main door did not latch properly and upon inspection we noticed it was not aligned properly with the strike plate.
The hot tub and pool area were disappointing. Anytime we wanted to use the water slide we had to call a maintenance worker to come then he had to sit for the duration it was running so we felt awkward using it because we didn’t want to inconvenience him. It felt less at our leisure. No one answered the phone anytime we tried to call from the pool room to have it turned on so I had to walk to the front desk in my bathing attire with other guests checking in which was uncomfortable. The exterior walls and trim around the slide are completely deteriorating and the trim is hanging off the walls from the moisture inside swelling the trim work and drywall. Poor drainage around the water slide as well as the hot tub were noticed. Water from the hot tub has been leaking behind the wall for a long time. Lower tiles and grout are noticeably falling off likely causing more water damage. It seems the ledge around the hot tub slopes towards the walls rather than towards the drain. Water was also noticed seeping under the door of the elevator maintenance room which is accessible from the pool area. Both the pool and hot tub had significant film collected around the slide, walls and floor. We did see a maintenance person clean the hot tub in a way I’ve never seen before. He held a cleaning spray bottle at arms extended height, above the hot tub water, and sprayed into the air multiple times. He took a magic eraser and scrubbed a few spots along the hot tub wall to clean the film build up.
The exterior entrance door, which is located just outside the pool doors, was frozen so it didn’t shut properly and never locked. You could feel a significant drift from the exterior door coming into the pool area. They had a small heater set up just inside the exterior door to help with heat loss but it literally did nothing. Inside the pool area was another emergency exit which, from the exterior, is completely blocked by snow not plowed away. The large wall insert fan that is trying to pull the moisture out is just making the situation worse. It is mounted next to the exterior emergency exit door and with the cold is creating a frozen layer over the door seals of the emergency exit door on the outside.
The staff were all very friendly and overall our room was nice. I really like that the two bedroom suite has two KING sized beds and not queens. Breakfast at Movado’s was great as well. Location is awesome and close to all amenities.
Unfortunately this hotel just needs a major overhaul to bring it up to date and the pool room upgraded to be competitive with other hotels who offer similar...
Read moreTravelled as a family with a toddler who doesn’t nap well. Had to add an extra night for an unexpected trip into town but I booked it online as a separate reservation (cheaper). Check-in isn’t until 3PM and I knew we’d have a cranky toddler so I called around 11:30AM to see about early check-in. I spoke with Winifred at the front desk. Let me just tell you...the staff at this hotel is AMAZING!! Winifred had to check with housekeeping then said she would call me back; 10 minutes later we checked in. Thank you Winifred and housekeeping!
The room has two King beds, one in a separate bedroom with its own tv. Perfect for naps to keep a quiet, dark room for our little guy to sleep and a large enough bed so I don’t have to pack his bed rails and great for co-sleeping. We also brought his portable DVD player and aux cables so he could watch his DVD’s in the bedroom and dad could watch hockey in the main area.
The room was very clean, bright and spacious. The front closet shares its space with the bedroom closet which was different but our little guy liked running between the rooms. We had everything we needed. A little wet bar was great for washing up little snacks, a microwave for popcorn and a fridge for drinks. There’s a Keurig as well so 5AM coffee was great instead of heading down to the front lobby in pj’s (they also have hot chocolate, tea etc in the lobby)
No continental breakfast however Perkins is on site so Winifred gave us a voucher for a free kids meal (with one adult meal purchase). The choice of kids meals included like 10 different mains (pancakes, eggs/bacon, hamburger, chicken fingers etc) with a side (fruit bowl, yogurt, bacon, toast etc), drink
and cookie (choc chip or sugar—fresh baked and a generous size for kids).
We also had the choice to purchase $5 vouchers (good until 10AM) for us which included 5-6 different breakfast combos (eggs, bacon or sausage, toast, hash browns, french toast, yogurt/fruit) and a drink. Just fyi if you get coffee at Perkins they just bring a carafe full. It’s $2.69 for just coffee but it’s like 5-6 cups worth and is included in the adult meal voucher. Also they counted the $5 voucher as an adult meal purchase for the kids meal.
The hotel has been updated with more modern finishes and is conveniently located to pretty much everything. Superstore, Walmart, Winners, Rona, Tim Horton’s etc. Parking was good and continues in the back and along the side. Didn’t notice plug ins though.
Overall our stay was great! We’ll definitely look to stay here again the next time...
